#SHOWBIZ: YSDAF 2025 Urban Tour begins on Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR: The annual Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival (YSDAF) 2025 will finally be kicking off its Urban Tour with three stops over three months starting Saturday. In a statement yesterday, its organisers, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) and Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), said that the beloved Malaysian festival made a bold move to scale up this year geographically by embarking on its first tour to bring the festival directly to communities across Peninsular Malaysia. "After its Kampung Tour to five states and seven locations from April to May, it makes a full circle back to Klang Valley with 130 free arts activities. "YSDAF 2025 Urban Tour boasts Festival Highlights from its Programme Partners including FabU, Malaysian Institute of Arts, MyDance Alliance, Orang Orang Drum Theatre, Rhizo, Soundscape Records, Stage ReSET, The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat and Young KL Singers," said the organisers. Staples at all locations include the Young KL Singers' "Spice, Magic And Mystique" with folk songs from around South East Asia and their upcoming Coldplay and Alanis Morissette concert. Festival premieres include MyDance Alliance's site-specific "Dancing In Place" which features five new dance works per location as well as Orang Orang Drum Theatre's "Berlumba Seperti Arnab", an exciting reimagining of the Aesop's fable "The Tortoise And The Hare". Arsyad Azrai's "Dollah" which premiered during the Kampung Tour will be performed in full at the Urban Tour alongside "Ceritaku", a series of monologues drawn from the human library interviews that ran throughout the Kampung Tour. An eclectic lineup of buskers curated by Stage ReSET will be featured, performing the blues to classical guitar salon music, Celtic music, and electronic music. For Malaysians who prefer to keep cool in the convenience of a mall, the first stop is KL East Mall with 30 epic shows and workshops by 250 artistes from 11am to 5.30pm. A 60-strong choir alongside crowd favourites like clowns and even a wushu dance troupe all the way from Johor will also be at the mall. Workshops for Sabah's Magunatip dance (bamboo pole dance), joget, the Jom Nyanyi Trek Tek Tek kids' singing workshop, and Dance It Out! will only take place at KL East Mall. In addition, there will be an interactive installation "Teng-Teng: Kembali Ke Akar" displayed like a hopscotch but filled with natural wonders like husks and leaves. Another rare treat will be WaaiwaiiDrum, who is bringing his street rhythms indoors with his symphony from buckets, pans, and woks. From the pulse of the city, YSDAF invites festival-goers to chill at PARC on July 5 from 11am to 5pm. One of Subang Jaya's precious gems, this thriving sustainability-driven hub nestled in a park is the perfect backdrop for its second Urban Tour stop. Those who missed the Festival Highlights at KL East Mall have another chance to catch it alongside some new acts, including winners of the YSDAF 2025 Pitch Start grant aimed at engaging Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). "Oh! Together-Gather In The Kalendar" by Sumay Cheah of OtherHalf Studio and Sumidik, reimagines the traditional Chinese calendar in an art installation featuring suspended braille-printed paper, poetry, and scent. On the other hand, "A Synesthetic Symphony: The Art Of Sound And Sight" by Synesthetic Symphony Of Sound And Sight (4S) brings together blind artists and special needs children. Another highlight is the Handyzone booths. Parents should check an assortment of science, food, technology, and crafting workshops by Fun4Kids, KeyNote Minds, and Some Fun Enterprise. Adults can try clothes mending and communal weaving with Fashion Revolution, wooden stool making with EPIC, silver jewellery workshop with Nellevate Studio, and even making a luggage tag with Precious Plastic Malaysia. Other workshops include Lindy Hop, screen printing, picture book-making, Jikey mask-making, and a children's drama workshop. Taking advantage of the beautiful outdoor setting, Grow Subang will also. be running gardening workshops even for the littlest gardeners. Festival goers can enjoy performances like the family-friendly Music Play Date by The KLPAC Symphonic Band and Hanyut by WindRiver Productions while lounging on Floating Islands and Nothing But Us – two installation pavilions created by the Malaysian Institute Of Art. YSDAF 2025 will culminate in the Finale at Elmina Lakeside Mall on Aug 9.

10 best spots in KL East Mall to dine with your friends & family

Did you know that before Elmina Lakeside Mall came into the picture, KL East Mall was Sime Darby's original pride and joy? Nestled at Taman Sri Melati and not directly linked to any major public transport, it's no surprise that this mall is mostly frequented by the locals — unlike the ever-bustling giants like MyTown, Sunway Velocity, and IOI Mall, which are packed to the brim almost every weekend with shoppers from all over KL and Selangor. Personally, KL East Mall is my lowkey go-to for a good shopping sesh — especially when I've exhausted my options at other malls. And beyond fashion finds, it's also home to a solid lineup of eateries ready to satisfy your cravings. Feeling a little stuck on what to eat next? Don't worry, I've got you. Here's our curated list of the 10 best eats at KL East Mall — a delicious guide to help you head in the right direction! If you're on the hunt for halal seafood at KL East Mall, GalahGala Seafood Restaurant might just be your next go-to spot. This relatively new branch — barely a year old — has already made waves with its flavour-packed dishes and inviting atmosphere. Start your feast with their Signature Sang Har Noodle (from RM88), the undisputed star of the menu. Think golden, crispy egg noodles soaked in rich, velvety gravy, crowned with luscious butter-drenched freshwater prawns. It's indulgent, comforting, and oh-so-satisfying. Craving a little spice? Their Sweet Sour & Spicy Crab (seasonal price) is a crowd favourite — live Indonesian mud crab swimming in a bold sauce that balances tang, sweetness, and just the right kick of heat. If you're dining in a group, their thoughtfully curated set menus take the guesswork out of ordering. Designed for parties of 2 up to 10, these sets are perfect for sharing. For a party of 2, you can choose from 3 enticing sets: Set A (RM108) brings together Salted Egg Fried Squid, Sweet & Sour Diced Chicken, Yuan Yang Kai Lan, Yang Zhou Fried Rice, and Iced Lemon Tea. Set B (RM198) features house specialties like Honey Squid and Crab Omelette, while Set C (RM258) goes the extra mile with the addition of Nyonya Kapitan Fried Siakap. +6016 373 7335 Daily: 11am – 10pm Facebook | Instagram Tiga Ikan Restaurant is where Asian fusion gets a halal-certified, fun dining twist — bringing together the bold, comforting flavours of Malaysia, Korea, and Japan all under one roof. It's the perfect spot if you're craving variety without having to hop continents. The star of the menu? Their signature Seafood Mix Curry Laksa Soup (RM29.90) — a rich, aromatic bowl that's as comforting as it is flavourful. But the journey doesn't stop at local delights. Venture further east with tempting Korean and Japanese selections like the Korean Garlic Soy Fried Chicken Donburi (RM23.90), or the smoky, tender Grilled Teriyaki Saba Fillet Shoyu Ramen (RM31.90), which brings warmth with every slurp. And don't skip dessert — Tiga Ikan knows how to end a meal on a high note. Try the Croffle Banana with Ice Cream (RM17.50), where crispy croissant meets fluffy waffle, or go for the silky smooth Caramel Custard Pudding (RM6.50). +6019 878 6309 Daily: 10am – 10pm Facebook | Instagram Serai is another effortless yet excellent choice for those seeking halal-certified local fare served in a cosy setting with attentive service to match. It's the kind of place that feels both familiar and refined — perfect for everything from casual lunches to dinner catch-ups. Dining with friends or family? The Serai Platter (RM37) is made for sharing and showcases a medley of bold, comforting flavours: aromatic serai rice, spicy oxtail asam pedas, honey-glazed squid, zesty acar, and crispy ayam goreng berempah. It's a little bit of everything, served beautifully on one plate. For solo foodies, the Nasi Campur Serai (RM29) hits all the right notes — Jasmine rice paired with tender rendang tok beef, salted egg, Thai-style fried fish, and a fiery eggplant sambal that packs a punch. Craving something simple yet satisfying? Serai's stir-fried classics won't disappoint. Try the indulgent Sang Har Yin Yong (RM45), the smoky Seafood Char Kueh Teow (RM23), or the ever-comforting Kampung Fried Rice (RM25). +603 4101 9966 Daily: 11am – 10pm Facebook | Instagram | Website This list is shaping up to be a celebration of local flavours — and now, Malayan Cookhouse steps in with a contemporary twist on classic Malaysian cuisine in KL East Mall.
