#SHOWBIZ: YSDAF 2025 Urban Tour begins on Saturday
In a statement yesterday, its organisers, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) and Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), said that the beloved Malaysian festival made a bold move to scale up this year geographically by embarking on its first tour to bring the festival directly to communities across Peninsular Malaysia.
"After its Kampung Tour to five states and seven locations from April to May, it makes a full circle back to Klang Valley with 130 free arts activities.
"YSDAF 2025 Urban Tour boasts Festival Highlights from its Programme Partners including FabU, Malaysian Institute of Arts, MyDance Alliance, Orang Orang Drum Theatre, Rhizo, Soundscape Records, Stage ReSET, The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat and Young KL Singers," said the organisers.
Staples at all locations include the Young KL Singers' "Spice, Magic And Mystique" with folk songs from around South East Asia and their upcoming Coldplay and Alanis Morissette concert.
Festival premieres include MyDance Alliance's site-specific "Dancing In Place" which features five new dance works per location as well as Orang Orang Drum Theatre's "Berlumba Seperti Arnab", an exciting reimagining of the Aesop's fable "The Tortoise And The Hare".
Arsyad Azrai's "Dollah" which premiered during the Kampung Tour will be performed in full at the Urban Tour alongside "Ceritaku", a series of monologues drawn from the human library interviews that ran throughout the Kampung Tour.
An eclectic lineup of buskers curated by Stage ReSET will be featured, performing the blues to classical guitar salon music, Celtic music, and electronic music.
For Malaysians who prefer to keep cool in the convenience of a mall, the first stop is KL East Mall with 30 epic shows and workshops by 250 artistes from 11am to 5.30pm.
A 60-strong choir alongside crowd favourites like clowns and even a wushu dance troupe all the way from Johor will also be at the mall.
Workshops for Sabah's Magunatip dance (bamboo pole dance), joget, the Jom Nyanyi Trek Tek Tek kids' singing workshop, and Dance It Out! will only take place at KL East Mall.
In addition, there will be an interactive installation "Teng-Teng: Kembali Ke Akar" displayed like a hopscotch but filled with natural wonders like husks and leaves.
Another rare treat will be WaaiwaiiDrum, who is bringing his street rhythms indoors with his symphony from buckets, pans, and woks.
From the pulse of the city, YSDAF invites festival-goers to chill at PARC on July 5 from 11am to 5pm.
One of Subang Jaya's precious gems, this thriving sustainability-driven hub nestled in a park is the perfect backdrop for its second Urban Tour stop.
Those who missed the Festival Highlights at KL East Mall have another chance to catch it alongside some new acts, including winners of the YSDAF 2025 Pitch Start grant aimed at engaging Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
"Oh! Together-Gather In The Kalendar" by Sumay Cheah of OtherHalf Studio and Sumidik, reimagines the traditional Chinese calendar in an art installation featuring suspended braille-printed paper, poetry, and scent.
On the other hand, "A Synesthetic Symphony: The Art Of Sound And Sight" by Synesthetic Symphony Of Sound And Sight (4S) brings together blind artists and special needs children.
Another highlight is the Handyzone booths. Parents should check an assortment of science, food, technology, and crafting workshops by Fun4Kids, KeyNote Minds, and Some Fun Enterprise.
Adults can try clothes mending and communal weaving with Fashion Revolution, wooden stool making with EPIC, silver jewellery workshop with Nellevate Studio, and even making a luggage tag with Precious Plastic Malaysia.
Other workshops include Lindy Hop, screen printing, picture book-making, Jikey mask-making, and a children's drama workshop.
Taking advantage of the beautiful outdoor setting, Grow Subang will also. be running gardening workshops even for the littlest gardeners.
Festival goers can enjoy performances like the family-friendly Music Play Date by The KLPAC Symphonic Band and Hanyut by WindRiver Productions while lounging on Floating Islands and Nothing But Us – two installation pavilions created by the Malaysian Institute Of Art.
YSDAF 2025 will culminate in the Finale at Elmina Lakeside Mall on Aug 9.

Negaraku II Explores Malaysia's Story Through Art In George Town
By Siti Azila Alias GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- As Malaysians proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang ahead of the National Day, the spirit of patriotism, unity and hope for the future is also finding its voice through art. A year after unveiling negaraku, an exhibition honouring the nation's journey from independence to its future possibilites, art collector Bingley Sim and his wife Ima Norbinsha return with negaraku II, a more expansive sequel that goes deeper into the complexities of Malaysian identity. Running throughout the month (until Aug 31) at Hin Bus Depot, Jalan Gurdwara here, negaraku II showcases compelling works from the private collection of Sim, 62, and Ima, 63, two passionate champions of socially conscious Malaysian contemporary art. Curated by Ivan Gabriel, the exhibition features 35 works from the couple's private collection, with some presented as thematic sets, bringing the total number of individual pieces to about 60, divided into six chapters. In an interview with Bernama, Sim explained that the first chapter titled 'Pejuang-Pejuang' (Warriors), begins with a 1511 masterpiece by Edroger Rosili depicting the Portuguese arrival, a reminder of a history Malaysians must not forget, as their ancestors lived under colonial rule for centuries. He said the second chapter 'Malaysia, Truly Asia' takes inspiration from the well-known tourism slogan, highlighting the country's rich cultural diversity while also addressing the underlying challenges that coexist with its beauty. 'Third chapter 'Pendatang?' (Immigrants?) is quite core in this show because this is something very close to curator Ivan. It explores the migrant roots of many Malaysians, in fact, many of our parents or grandparents, in my case, were actually a migrant and became an immigrant from China,' he said. In Chapter 4 titled 'Sama-sama' (Together), Sim pointed out that it celebrates Malaysia's food culture as a unifying bridge between communities, while highlighting historical connections beyond popular eateries.

#SHOWBIZ: Cantopop's Heavenly King Jacky Cheung casts spell on Axiata Arena
KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Kong's Heavenly King of Cantopop Jacky Cheung Hok-Yau kept fans in a packed Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil here spellbound for a good three hours last night. The 64-year-old music legend sang 30 songs and kept 15,000 fans singing and swaying along to his beat from the word 'go' in his 60+ Concert Tour which started on the dot at 8pm. As in all of Cheung's concerts, he also entertained fans with spectacular, state-of-the-art props, themes and costumes which had fans asking for more. "I'm so happy to be back in Kuala Lumpur. I love my Malaysian fans, for they are very sporting and friendly," said Cheung who is marking four decades in music this year. Among the songs Cheung sang were Waiting For You Until My Heart Hurts, The Goodbye Kiss, Only Love Lasts Forever, Breaking Up In The Rain, Just Want To Walk With You All My Life, Another 10 Years, I've Waited Till All The Flowers Withered and A Never Changing Heart. "I've been to Kuala Lumpur many times, and I'm sure to be back in the years to come," said Cheung as he gave his Malaysian fans "10 out of 10" marks for being "simply amazing". Cheung debuted in 1985 with his first studio album Smile, which sold over 400,000 copies in Hong Kong. His subsequent albums experienced commercial success as well, with 14 of his albums becoming platinum certified. The Goodbye Kiss (1993) is one of the best-selling albums in multiple countries in Asia, while three of his albums have sold over a million copies in Taiwan, the most out of any artiste. His various accolades include the World Music Award (1996) for the World's Best-Selling Asian Artiste, the Billboard Music Award (1994) for Most Popular Asian Singer, and a Guinness World Record for the largest combined audience for a live act in 12 months, with more than two million audience members in 2012. Cheung, who has released more than 35 studio albums, is the best-selling music artiste of all time in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and has sold an estimated 60 million albums worldwide. Cheung has embarked on 10 concert tours during his 40-year career, including A Classic Tour (2016–2019), which ranks as one of the most-attended concert tours of all time with a total attendance of more than 4.5 million people.
