Safety harness compulsory for kids on two-wheelers in M'luru
Mangaluru: Mangaluru city police will monitor parents who travel on two-wheelers with children below four years without safety gear. According to deputy commissioner of police (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar, carrying children below four years on two-wheelers without safety harnesses constitutes a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. "As per the Supreme Court direction, a safety harness is compulsory for children below four years, and those riding two-wheelers should wear quality helmets with ISI marks, and also tie a safety harness around the child's waist. Hence, people should follow these guidelines and adhere to the law," the DCP said. The DCP also clarified that wearing seatbelts is mandatory for all car occupants, including rear-seat passengers. Instead of intercepting cars on roads, the traffic police will use artificial intelligence cameras to monitor and impose penalties on violators. Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said 75 people died in various road accidents in the city limits this year. Out of these, 70 fatalities occurred due to rash and negligent driving. The majority of the deceased were youth under 30 years old. The commissioner emphasised the importance of responsible driving and warned that rash and negligent driving can lead to accidents. Highlighting the dangers of drunk driving, the top cop cited a recent incident wherein two people, including NSUI district vice-president Omshree Poojary, died in a road accident caused by a drunk driver. The commissioner noted that the driver was booked under sections 185 and 183 of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, which can attract a fine up to Rs 10,000.

200 smart AI powered cameras start to detect traffic violations
Mangaluru: Nearly 200 smart cameras installed on Mangaluru city roads by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) have started capturing images of traffic violators. Once implemented fully, the intelligent traffic management system will send auto-generated traffic slips to the mobile phones of vehicle owners. Mangaluru City traffic police have already commenced the trial run, and violators have been receiving alert messages on their phones. However, the system will be officially launched in July, and thereafter, violators will have to pay penalties as per the Motor Vehicles Rules. The high-resolution cameras installed at prominent locations in the city started detecting various violations, including two-wheeler riding without a helmet, car driving without a seat belt, wrong-side driving, and signal jumping. The MSCL installed nearly 200 artificial intelligence cameras at various locations on the main roads of the city. High-resolution cameras equipped with AI tools are monitoring traffic flow and effectively detecting violations. The cameras provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools analyse the captured footage to identify and track traffic offences. DCP (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar told TOI that the entire system is under a trial run and it will be made fully functional from July 1. "Those who violate traffic rules will receive messages on their mobile phones during the trial run. However, we are not framing charges based on the camera inputs for the time being. We are planning to launch the system from next month with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). All cameras are linked to the NIC. After completing all necessary procedures, the system will be in place to check traffic violations in the city. In the next 10 days, we will be able to rectify all technical issues," he said. Smart cameras have been installed on MG Road, Bendoorwell, Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Mallikatta, Bejai, and several other locations. Smart traffic signals trial faces delays and disruptions
Mangaluru: Mangaluru Smart City Limited 's (MSCL) newly implemented traffic management system at three primary junctions is experiencing glitches during its trial Ballalbagh Junction, the experimental traffic signal system resulted in significant delays, causing difficulties for drivers due to reduced vehicle movement speed. Additionally, the trial run of the new traffic signal system at other places, including the KSRTC Junction, led to traffic disruptions. Drivers of buses, autorickshaws, and other vehicles found the traffic signals at additional locations a hurdle during peak Prabha KS, general manager (technical) of the MSCL, told TOI that new traffic signals with artificial intelligence (AI) cameras were installed at around 13 junctions in the city at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore. "We completed the work on the installation of cameras and signal lamps at nearly 10 locations, where city traffic police may begin the trial run of the system. Since the project was just completed, it requires fine-tuning to solve issues. Since the entire system is AI-enabled, it will take time to regulate the traffic at the back end. Considering the traffic flow at each junction, decisions will be taken to change the timings of traffic signals. The challenges encountered during the testing phase will be resolved shortly," he cameras equipped with AI tools are in place to monitor traffic flow and detect violations effectively. The cameras will provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools will analyse the captured footage to identify and track any traffic (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar said that it may take a few days to streamline the new traffic system, which was introduced on a trial basis at an additional three locations in the city. "We will optimise the system following a thorough assessment of the current conditions. We will study the timings of the traffic flow during peak hours and rectify the initial challenges," he added.
