Land sought for Rs 100 crore poultry farm project in Koila
Mangaluru: The proposed poultry farm project in Koila, Uppinangady, received positive support from the minister for animal husbandry and veterinary services, K Venkatesh, said Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai. The vacant land, currently under the department's jurisdiction, will be leased for this significant agricultural venture. A company has come forward to make a huge investment, and their commitment to establishing a modern poultry facility in the region would offer over 1,000 jobs, said Rai. The MLA said he met the minister in Bengaluru on Thursday and submitted the request seeking sanction of land for the setting up of a poultry farm in Koila. "A company intends to start a poultry farm in Koila, and it requires 50 acres to set up the project. Hence, I have requested the minister to release land under the department in Koila to the company. The company plans to invest around Rs 100 crore in the venture, which is expected to create 1,000 local jobs. When I informed this, the minister agreed to provide the land," he said. The MLA also met Aijaz Hussain, chief engineer of Karnataka Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, on Friday to seek the extension of the multi-village drinking water scheme for Vitla in his constituency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "I have discussed the matter with the officer and requested him that the people of Vitla should not be deprived of the benefits of the multi-village drinking water scheme. Centre has done little to support tobacco farmers: Minister
Mysuru: The Union govt earns over Rs 13,000 crore in tax revenue from tobacco cultivated in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, yet it has done little to support the farmers who grow it—especially during times of distress, said minister for animal husbandry and sericulture K Venkatesh. Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Tobacco Institute of India's Tobacco Farmers Awards, held here on Tuesday, Venkatesh, who represents Periyapatna where tobacco is a major commercial crop, emphasised the plight of tobacco farmers. "Due to heavy rain, many farmers are suffering losses. The manure they applied was washed away, forcing them to reapply it—adding to their expenses. It is the duty of Union govt and the Tobacco Board to step in during such times," he said. Venkatesh, himself a tobacco farmer for over 60 years, noted that while farmers struggle, tobacco-dependent industries continue to earn massive profits. "Most farmers are incurring losses. Yet, the companies that rely on tobacco are making huge gains," he added. Despite discussions on banning tobacco, farmers are unwilling to abandon the crop, citing a lack of viable alternatives. He also pointed out that nearly half of Karnataka's tobacco is produced in a single taluk—Periyapatna—and stressed that such a high-revenue crop deserves more govt attention. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologista recomenda: simples truque elimina o fungo facilmente Acabe com o Fungo Undo Venkatesh cautioned farmers against growing a second tobacco crop in the same season, saying it often leads to greater losses. Mysore MP Yaduveer Wadiyar highlighted the need to reduce the high cost of tobacco production and urged for the adoption of modern technology. "Production costs are rising. Farmers need innovative methods to reduce expenses," he said. Wadiyar proposed an eco-friendly alternative to traditional firewood used in curing tobacco. "Currently, tobacco farmers use a lot of firewood. If they switch to lantana—a plant that is invasive and harmful to forests—it could help reduce environmental damage, while also cutting costs," he suggested. At the event, ten farmers from Karnataka were honoured across four categories. Sharad Tandan, director, TII, said India is the second largest tobacco producer in the world and the third largest producer of Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco, following China and Brazil. India is a leading leaf tobacco exporter in the world, exporting tobacco to more than 100 countries across the globe. "A significant challenge impacting the legal industry and the domestic tobacco growers is the large illegal cigarette trade. India is the fourth largest illicit cigarette market globally and results in an annual revenue loss of Rs 21,000 crore to the govt," added Tandan. Yashwanth Kumar Chidipothu, chairman of Tobacco Board, BC Srinivas, director (auctions), Tobacco Board, and S Ramakrishnan, principal scientist and head, CTRI Research Station, Hunsur, were present.

Illegal LPG cylinder refilling still rampant as govt turns a blind eye
Hyderabad: Despite many accidents, some of which have been fatal, the illegal practice of refilling small cylinders from larger LPG cylinders continues unabated in the city. This illegal activity continues to thrive without any action taken by the authorities. The illegal trade of cooking gas thefts by the illegal refilling of the cylinders is mushrooming across the city, especially in Old City areas. These cylinders are used by small hotels, jewellery stores among others. In areas like Falaknuma, Chandrayangutta, Bandlaguda, Vattepally, Yakutpura, Bahadurpura, Mallepally, Nampally and the localities in slums, the owners of several shops that repair gas stoves are busy doing a dangerous activity that can cause a calamity in the area. Shockingly, these stores are located in most of the densely populated residential and commercial areas. They transfer LPG from regular sized cylinders supplied to homes to small ones of 2-5 kg size. According to law, illegal gas refilling is a crime. These shops are usually cluttered with spares of gas stoves and empty cylinders. The refilling is done using a regular sized cylinder to a smaller one using a poor-quality connector. The entire filling and refilling are done so haphazardly that it is a disaster waiting to happen – not just a gas leak but also the likelihood of cylinder or gas explosion. Mohammed Ahmed, an activist, said, 'These small cylinders are especially used by the Sunars, goldsmiths or gold and silver traders. The entire Gulzar Houz area uses the gas and illegally refills the cylinders. However, several incidents have occurred in the past but still no action has been taken to stop the illegal trade of refilling cylinders.' It has been noted that the large cylinders for the job are bought by the refilling shops from gas agencies, which are paid a handsome commission for it. The small cylinder of five kg is refilled for between Rs 400 and Rs 500, while the normal cylinder in black market costs Rs 1,200. Last month, a 35-year-old man was severely injured when a blast took place when he was illegally refilling LPG cylinders in a store in Kukatpally. He was illegally refilling gas into small cylinders at an electrical and gas services shop. Despite several such incidents, no strict action is being taken by civil supplies and police to curb this menace that is widespread in the city. Citizens alleged that police have failed to control this illegal activity despite many complaints. 'The civil supplies officials should constantly monitor such illegal activities and take necessary action. At the field level, the police should be active enough to identify the illegal activity,' said K Venkatesh, a resident of Lal Darwaza. Besides, most hotels and restaurants use domestic cylinders for commercial purposes, causing a financial loss to the government.
