Steelers LS calls Mike Tomlin 'literally ruthless' despite being a player's coach

Many love to criticize Steelers HC Mike Tomlin for being a player's coach — but LS Christian Kuntz believes everyone has the wrong idea. On Thursday's Kaboly + Mack podcast, Kuntz argued that Tomlin is just as 'ruthless' as he is motivational: 'Everything that's said in the public, and the way he acts, is truly the way he acts in the locker room in front of us,' Kuntz said. 'Motivating, you know, he's gonna get it out of you. People call him a player's coach, and yeah, obviously he's a player's coach, 'cause you see how many guys want to come play with him. A player's coach, yes, but he's gonna get on your a--. He is gonna let you know about every single finer detail; he is going to call you out. If you're not doing your job, you're being held accountable.' Recently, Steelers legend James Harrison also weighed in on Tomlin's player's coach mentality — considering it both his best and worst quality. How Tomlin's ruthlessness will mesh with the Aaron Rodgers-led offense remains a mystery — but the Steelers are hopeful this union will finally end their postseason misfortune. Mason Rudolph is Glad to Be Back in Pittsburgh: ‘It's a Sports Town Like No Other'

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph runs off the field against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 6, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to wait on Aaron Rodgers, but as of right now, Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and rookie Will Howard are the three quarterbacks on their roster. If Rodgers doesn't end up signing, Rudolph is expected to be in the driver's seat to be the Steelers' starter in 2025. Rudolph, 29, was selected with the No. 76 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Steelers. He spent the first six years of his career in Pittsburgh before joining the Tennessee Titans in 2024. Advertisement Rudolph re-signed with the Steelers in March, and he's thrilled to be back in the Steel City. Rudolph showed his support as thousands of children participated in the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on Saturday. 'It's a lot of hard work. They're in shape; there's no question. They've got their parents and friends and family here to support them, and that's all we're trying to do,' Rudolph said, via WTAE. 'Being back in the city of Pittsburgh, it's a sports town like no other. Any time we get to repay that, it's always a fun opportunity.' Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in a game against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 6, 2024. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth gave Rudolph a ringing endorsement during an interview on the Kaboly + Mack podcast last month. Advertisement 'As guys on the team, we have all the belief in Mason,' Freiermuth said. 'You know he made some big plays when he was here last, winning three straight games to make the playoffs. Whatever happens, happens, but we will see.' Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also expressed at the NFL owner's meetings that he is confident in Rudolph's abilities if he ends up being the starter. 'We're optimistic about the room that we're constructing. Obviously, we're excited about having Mason Rudolph back,' Tomlin said at the NFL owner's meetings. 'Our knowledge of him not only as a player but as a man. It's exciting to have him back and I know he's excited to be back. But, certainly, we are going to explore all our options to round that room out.' Tomlin thinks Rudolph's lengthy experience with the team is his best attribute. Advertisement 'I think that's why we re-acquired him,' Tomlin said. 'We like Mason Rudolph, but, you know, that's no secret. … His experience within our building certainly helps. Not only helps him, but helps us.' Rudolph, 29, was selected with the No. 76 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Steelers. He spent the first six years of his career in Pittsburgh before spending last season with the Tennessee Titans. He signed a two-year deal with the Steelers in free agency earlier this month. Rudolph's one season in Tennessee didn't go as planned, as he was 1-4 as a starter and Tennessee finished a disastrous 3-14. In total, Rudolph played in eight games. On the season, he completed 64.0% of his passes for 1,530 yards with nine touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a passer rating of 55.5. Mason Rudolph Shares Story on First Time Meeting Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to wait on Aaron Rodgers, but as of right now, Mason Rudolph is the projected starting quarterback for the 2025 season. However, if the four-time league MVP eventually signs with the Steelers, it will be something that Rudolph welcomes. During an appearance on the Kaboly + Mack podcast on Monday, Rudolph shared that he doesn't know Rodgers well, but in his few interactions, Rodgers has been great to him. Advertisement 'I've met Aaron after games only, over the years,' Rudolph said. 'I remember my rookie year, we played a preseason game there in Lambeau and kind of had a rough, early outing, and it was so cool I thought for him to come over and he said, 'Hello,' and kind of offered some words of encouragement. It motivated me to keep working hard, which doesn't happen a lot.' In 2023, Rudolph started the final three games of the regular season after Kenny Pickett was lost to a high-ankle sprain and Mitchell Trubisky struggled in his limited action. Advertisement Rudolph responded with the best play of his career, completing 55 of 75 passes (74.3%) for 719 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions while leading Pittsburgh to three straight victories and a playoff spot. Rudolph revealed he was never guaranteed to be the starter when he signed with the team back in March. 'I think they know what I can do, what we were able to do there towards the end of 2023. They're confident in me. They know I can play well when asked of me, when my number's called,' Rudolph said. 'I assumed they were going to sign people and add to the roster. They always go to training camp with four quarterbacks. So I knew that going in.' This article originally appeared on Steelers Now: Mason Rudolph Shares Story on First Time Meeting Aaron Rodgers

Todd Haley: 'Aaron Rodgers is the best option for Steelers'

Todd Haley: 'Aaron Rodgers is the best option for Steelers' The Steelers' 'Killer B' era offensive coordinator recently weighed in on the 2025 quarterback debate between Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph. Todd Haley, who served as the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, gave a harsh truth regarding the team's potential 2025 quarterback room—there's Rodgers, then there's everyone else. Advertisement Haley recently appeared on the Kaboly + Mack podcast to give his two cents on the Steelers' projected QB room for 2025: 'When you don't have a quarterback—again, we have the whole Aaron Rodgers elephant in the room. I understand that, which, to me, is the best short-term option available for the Steelers,' Haley said. 'He's the best answer, in my opinion, for right now.' Contrary to what Rudolph's supporters may believe, Rodgers gives the Pittsburgh Steelers the best chance to compete right now in 2025. Whether or not that's worth the offseason drama he's already brought to the Steel City is a conversation for another time, however.
