Gas prices: Slipping oil prices fuel summer savings at Canadian pumps
Canada's gas price average fell 2.7 cents per litre over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. The move lower is largely thanks to falling crude prices in response to fears of an oversupplied market. The biggest discount this week was in Calgary, where the price of a litre of regular gasoline dropped 10.6 cents between August 7 and August 15. At this time last year, Canada's gas price average was $1.678 per litre, compared to $1.452 as of Thursday. "As it stands today, there is a glut of crude oil on the market that is keeping prices down," En-Pro International chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight wrote in a blog post on Thursday. Earlier this week, a report from the International Energy Agency found global supply could outpace demand by a record 2.96 million barrels per day in 2026, surpassing the buildup during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. At the same time, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration released on Wednesday showed American stockpiles are at the highest level in two months. Benchmark oil prices drifted lower on Friday as investors await news from U.S. President Donald Trump's summit in Alaska with Russia's Vladimir Putin. Progress towards a deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine would help de-risk the global oil market and support prices. Trump recently increased U.S. tariffs on Indian goods in response to the country's purchases of Russian oil. So far, he has avoided targeting China over its Russian oil purchases. Saskatchewan residents pump 31 cents per litre of gas into government coffers: report
A new report by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) shows drivers in Saskatchewan are paying 31 cents per litre of gasoline in federal and provincial taxes when they fill up. In its 27th annual Gas Tax Honesty report released Thursday, the not-for-profit citizen's group says taxes make up about 24 per cent of the pump price in the province. According to the report, the prices are based on data from retail analytics firm Kalibrate for the second week of July. The report says filling up a family minivan in Saskatchewan costs about $23 in taxes. 'Saskatchewanians are paying three different taxes every time they fill up their vehicles,' said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. 'Both Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Scott Moe need to cut their taxes on fuel that make life more expensive.' The federal gas tax costs 10 cents per litre, and the GST costs about 6.3 cents per litre. The provincial government also charges a provincial gas tax of 15 cents per litre, according to Haubrich. The report says drivers may pay up to seven different taxes, which aren't shown on receipts. These include provincial excise tax, carbon tax, transit tax, provincial sales tax, federal excise tax, federal sales tax and tax-on-tax. Speaking generally about prices across Canada, the report shows Victoria, B.C., has the highest gas prices in the country at $1.62 per litre, with 56 cents of that being tax. Vancouver has the second-highest pump prices at $1.60 per litre, while Alberta has the lowest gas prices at $1.27 per litre. Saskatchewan has the third-lowest pump prices at $1.33 per litre, following Ontario at $1.32 per litre. 'Moe needs to take a look at what's going on in other provinces and cut the gas tax,' Haubrich said. 'Other provinces have been able to cut gas taxes to make life more affordable, and the government of Saskatchewan needs to step up and do the same,' he said. 'It would save taxpayers about $120 million a year, and that's only about half a percent of total government revenue. So it's something the government can afford to do to give Saskatchewan residents that little bit of extra break at the pump.' When it comes to which city pays the highest gas tax, the report shows Vancouver stands on top at $63 cents per litre, followed by Montreal with $62 cents per litre. Manitoba has the lowest gas tax in the country, costing $29 cents per litre, followed by Alberta. The federal government cancelled its consumer carbon tax effective April 1, saving Canadians about $11.26 on every 64-litre fill-up. -With files from Stacey Hein

Gas prices in Canada hold flat this week as experts ask, 'Where's the spike?'
Canada's gas price average held steady at $1.444 per litre of regular fuel over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. That's nearly a 14 per cent discount year over year. North Bay, Ont. and Gatineau, Que. were the most volatile markets this week, with prices falling 8.6 cents per litre in the former, and rising 5.4 cents per litre in the latter. Gas prices were a big factor in this week's inflation reading from Statistics Canada. The federal data agency said the annualized inflation rate rose to 1.9 per cent in June from 1.7 per cent in May. "Headline inflation grew at a faster pace, as gasoline prices fell to a lesser extent in June (-13.4 per cent) than in May (-15.5 per cent)," StatCan wrote on Tuesday. "Year over year, the CPI (consumer price index) excluding energy (+2.7 per cent) remained higher than the CPI in June, partly due to the removal of consumer carbon pricing in April." While the elimination of the consumer-facing carbon tax has cooled typically hot summer gas prices in Canada, analysts in the United States say the summer driving season has been unusually cheap south of the border as well. Researchers at the Energy Policy Research Foundation are asking, "Where's the spike?" "U.S. gasoline prices generally rise substantially with the onset of the summer driving season. However, except for California and the other West Coast states, prices have been generally flat during the summer of 2025, a distinct deviation from historical trends," wrote researchers at the Washington, D.C.-based non-profit. "This is even more surprising given that in the current context demand has not slackened. Vehicle miles traveled continue their upward trend, albeit with improving efficiency, and there are several risk factors that could lead to tight supplies." Canada's gas price average climbs to $1.444 per litre: Kalibrate data
Canada's gas price average climbed to $1.444 per litre of regular fuel over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. Double-digit increases in Vancouver and Calgary, gains throughout Ontario, and lower prices in the Maritimes, worked out to a 5.3 cent gain between July 3 and July 10. At this time last year, the nationwide average stood at $1.691. Cheaper prices at the pumps don't appear to have convinced Canadian drivers to splurge on sports cars or luxury vehicles. According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC), subcompact sales jumped 50.5 per cent year-over-year in the first half of 2025, and 94.5 per cent in the second quarter, albeit at what the firm describes as "very low volumes." DAC says the luxury passenger car segment saw a 46.9 per cent decrease, while sports car sales fell 18 per cent. 'The new light vehicle sales market saw some unusual sales patterns in the first half of 2025,' managing partner Andrew King stated in a report on Wednesday. "Of interest were the deviations from long-established trends, with a boost for subcompact cars and small vans following years of declines.' Last month, DAC reported gasoline consumption fell 3.5 per cent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025. Follow Yahoo Finance Canada for more weekly gas price updates. Gas prices: Canada-wide average lowest since 2020 to start summer driving season
Canada's gas price average kicked off the summer driving season at its lowest level since 2020, according to data from Kalibrate. In the United States, drivers saw the cheapest prices at the pumps since 2021 ahead of the July 4th holiday. July 4th is widely seen as the start of North America's summer driving season. Prices typically rise at this time of year due to higher seasonal demand. However, this year, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan estimates Americans will spend about US$500 million less on gasoline over the long weekend versus 2024. According to Kalibrate, Canada's gas price average fell 2.4 cents per litre of regular fuel to $1.391 over the past week. The steepest price drops between June 26 and July 3 were in North Bay, Ont., Abbotsford, B.C., and Calgary. At this time last year, Canada's gas price average was $1.671. The drop in gas prices has been largely driven by lower benchmark oil (CL=F)(BZ=F) following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. "As long as tensions in the Middle East remain contained and the U.S. avoids a major hurricane, we could see the national average fall below US$3 per gallon later this summer,' De Haan wrote in a blog earlier this week. On Friday, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was US$3.15, according to AAA data. Follow Yahoo Finance Canada for more weekly gas price updates.
