Gas prices fell again in Canada this week; Here's where the discounts are deepest

Gas prices fell 1.1 cents per litre of regular fuel on average in cities across Canada this week, according to data from Kalibrate. The average rate at the pumps is down about 13 per cent year-over-year. This week, Abbotsford, B.C. led the nation with the biggest drop, at 17.9 cents per litre. Victoria and Prince George, B.C. followed with weekly discounts of 11.6 cents and 8.8 cents, respectively. Meanwhile, resumed trade talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have helped put the price of oil (CL=F) on track for its first seven-day gain in three weeks. Back in Canada, CEOs and executives at oil and gas firms are loading up on company stock. A report from BMO Capital Markets found insiders purchased $54 million in shares in the 90 days since March 1. Analyst Jeremy McCrea says this is an undeniably bullish signal for investors. 'Although there are many reasons why insiders sell ... there is one reason they buy," he wrote. Follow Yahoo Finance Canada for more weekly gas price updates. Scroll below to find your nearest city. Gas prices 'among the cheapest in nearly a decade' to start summer, analyst says

Canada's gas price average fell by 5.4 cents per litre of regular fuel this week, according to data from Kalibrate. The break from recent gains mirrors price action in the United States, where a leading analyst says rates at the pump are "among the cheapest in nearly a decade" when adjusting for inflation. The Canadian average price fell from $1.492 per litre to $1.438 between May 22 and May 29, led by declines in Vancouver, Kelowna, B.C., and Sarnia, Ont. At this time last year, the national average price was $1.688. The U.S. Memorial Day holiday is considered the unofficial start to the summer driving season in North America. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, says while prices did not fall as much as expected, the holiday was still one of the most affordable for drivers since 2021. "When adjusted for inflation, [it was] among the cheapest in nearly a decade,' he wrote in a blog post. 'As we move into the heart of summer, I believe we're likely to see a relatively stable stretch for gas prices as refinery maintenance wraps up." De Haan sees OPEC+ production commentary and growing uncertainty around the looming hurricane season in the U.S. Gulf region shaping prices in the weeks ahead. According to a report from Reuters, OPEC+ members may discuss a larger output increase in July compared to gains prior months at its meeting on Saturday. The potential additional supply could weigh on benchmark oil prices. Follow Yahoo Finance Canada for more weekly gas price updates. Scroll below to find your nearest city. Gasoline sales in Canada have not recovered from COVID-19; data show one province is buying a lot less

Gasoline volumes sold at retail fuel stations rose by 3.1 per cent on an annualized basis in the first quarter of 2025, according to Kalibrate. However, the data and retail analytics firm says sales in Canada remain below pre-COVID levels. "At a time when fuel volumes in many global regions remain below pre-pandemic levels — and in some cases continue to decline — this growth is a welcome sign of resilience," analysts wrote in a report published earlier this week. Kalibrate says it collects and analyzes volumetric sales and site data from over 7,000 retail gasoline locations across Canada. On a regional basis, sales in Manitoba and Saskatchewan led the way in the first quarter, with a 4.8 per cent increase. On the low end, British Columbia booked a 1.5 per cent gain. "Despite being the lowest, B.C.'s growth is still notable given the West Coast's evolving fuel landscape," Kalibrate analysts wrote. Compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, Kalibrate says Atlantic Canada's gasoline volumes are now just 1.1 per cent below below that benchmark. Alberta is close behind, at 1.8 per cent below. Quebec remains furthest from recovery, with gasoline volumes 8.9 per cent below Q1 2019. While Kalibrate does not attempt to explain the disparity, data from Statistics Canada show Quebec accounted for 60 per cent of new zero-emission vehicle registrations in the final three months of 2024. Speaking at a recent industry conference, General Motors (GM) Canada vice-president of marketing and sales Shane Peever said Quebec accounts for more than half of its electric vehicle sales in the country. This week, Canada's gas price average added 2.2 cents per litre of regular fuel. Timmins, Ont., Fort St. John, B.C., and Peterborough, Ont. saw the biggest increases between May 15 and May 22. Gas prices climb for second straight week, led by Alberta and B.C.

Canada's gas price average gained for a second consecutive week, adding 3.4 cents per litre of regular fuel, according to data from Kalibrate. The rise at the pumps mirrors a second weekly advance for benchmark oil prices, as U.S.-China trade tensions continue to cool. The Canadian average price increased from $1.436 per litre on May 8 to $1.47, led by gains in British Columbia and Alberta. North Bay, Ont., Calgary, and Kelowna, B.C. booked the biggest gains. At this time last year, the national gas price average was 13 per cent higher, at $1.697 per litre. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (CL=F) and European Brent crude futures (BZ=F) rose on Friday as analysts bet on smoother trade between the United States and China, easing fears of a global demand hit. The benchmarks are headed for a weekly gain of 1.6 per cent and 1.7 per cent, respectively, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, Uber says fossil fuel demand from its massive fleet of drivers could last longer than the company expected. Earlier this week, the San Francisco-based company's global head of electrification said Uber faces "big challenges" in its push for drivers to adopt electric vehicles. Uber wants more government help to meet its 2030 goal for 100 per cent zero emissions rides in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Follow Yahoo Finance Canada for more weekly gas price updates.
