Saskatchewan residents pump 31 cents per litre of gas into government coffers: report
In its 27th annual Gas Tax Honesty report released Thursday, the not-for-profit citizen's group says taxes make up about 24 per cent of the pump price in the province. According to the report, the prices are based on data from retail analytics firm Kalibrate for the second week of July.
The report says filling up a family minivan in Saskatchewan costs about $23 in taxes.
'Saskatchewanians are paying three different taxes every time they fill up their vehicles,' said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director.
'Both Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Scott Moe need to cut their taxes on fuel that make life more expensive.'
The federal gas tax costs 10 cents per litre, and the GST costs about 6.3 cents per litre. The provincial government also charges a provincial gas tax of 15 cents per litre, according to Haubrich.
The report says drivers may pay up to seven different taxes, which aren't shown on receipts. These include provincial excise tax, carbon tax, transit tax, provincial sales tax, federal excise tax, federal sales tax and tax-on-tax.
Speaking generally about prices across Canada, the report shows Victoria, B.C., has the highest gas prices in the country at $1.62 per litre, with 56 cents of that being tax.
Vancouver has the second-highest pump prices at $1.60 per litre, while Alberta has the lowest gas prices at $1.27 per litre.
Saskatchewan has the third-lowest pump prices at $1.33 per litre, following Ontario at $1.32 per litre.
'Moe needs to take a look at what's going on in other provinces and cut the gas tax,' Haubrich said.
'Other provinces have been able to cut gas taxes to make life more affordable, and the government of Saskatchewan needs to step up and do the same,' he said.
'It would save taxpayers about $120 million a year, and that's only about half a percent of total government revenue. So it's something the government can afford to do to give Saskatchewan residents that little bit of extra break at the pump.'
When it comes to which city pays the highest gas tax, the report shows Vancouver stands on top at $63 cents per litre, followed by Montreal with $62 cents per litre.
Manitoba has the lowest gas tax in the country, costing $29 cents per litre, followed by Alberta.
The federal government cancelled its consumer carbon tax effective April 1, saving Canadians about $11.26 on every 64-litre fill-up.

DAZN and Fubo team up for (almost) all the soccer Canadians want
A decade after streaming apps first shook up the Canadian TV sports rights scene, vibrations of a new shift are being felt. On Monday, DAZN and Fubo, who hold the bulk of the major European soccer leagues in their broadcast stables, confirmed what astute soccer viewers may have figured out a week ago: they're working together. In a Canada-only partnership, the two streamers will now have a subscription carved out on the other's service, allowing Canadians to start bundling their soccer fandom in one place. If they have not already set up year-long subscriptions in one place, that is. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. If you don't see it, please check your junk folder. The next issue of Sunrise will soon be in your inbox. Please try again Interested in more newsletters? Browse here. In other words, if you've been subscribing to English Premier League on Fubo but have been eschewing DAZN's coverage of the UEFA Champions League, perhaps because you just didn't want to have several app subscriptions, you can now add a DAZN soccer package under the Fubo umbrella. That is going live any time. And the opposite is true — and indeed has been true for at least a week — if you are a DAZN subscriber, you can get EPL matches there again, by adding the Fubo sports option. DAZN previously held the rights to EPL but lost them to Fubo beginning in 2022. Fubo subscribers will now be able to add DAZN's 'premium' services inside the Fubo app, like the NFL, rugby and boxing on top of DAZN's soccer rights. (DAZN's pay per view events, like big-tent boxing nights, are not part of the Fubo deal.) This deal with Fubo has prompted DAZN to reset how you can subscribe to their service; previously their premium service gave you across the board access to their various feeds, including NFL Game Pass, UEFA club competitions like the Champions League, and more. DAZN now has three different packages: a basic subscription which gets you NFL, Champions League, Budesliga and more, basically what you've always had; second a 'DAZN+' package, which adds on the Fubo rights, including EPL and Serie A; third a package called DAZN Soccer, which only includes the soccer rights. Long-standing users of Fubo know that their service is more than just a soccer streamer: they've got MLB as well, plus CBC channels, One Soccer, beIN Sports and more. Adding more soccer, adding the NFL, is an exciting thing said Ben Grad, Fubo's Senior Vice-President, Strategic Partnerships and Operations. 'We were already the home of soccer in Canada, and it makes that even stronger,' Grad said. And so does striking a deal with DAZN to have EPL and Serie A land there too. It's a chance to put their brand in front of even more customers. Same goes for DAZN on Fubo. It's all win-win said Grad. 'It's not something that we've decided to distribute broadly,' it's super premium content,' he said. 'And I think they're (DAZN) really excited to enable their customers, or anyone who wants to their platform to have access to that. 'They're looking at us — I don't want to put words in their mouth — but I would imagine that, you know they've looked at us and how much we've been able to grow our own offering in Canada in just a few short years, and seeing like, hey, these guys have been really good at customer acquisition. They have a great content experience. They have some great content on there. It'd be great if we could plug into that and enable that to help grow.' Add it all up: if you want European soccer, you only need to look to one place, be it DAZN or Fubo … unless you want La Liga (TSN) or the FA Cup (Sportsnet). It's almost like we're going back to a universe we used to call 'cable.' pjohnston@

Wall Street holds at a standstill near its record heights
NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street held near its record heights on Monday, ahead of a week likely to be dominated by updates from the head of the Federal Reserve and from some of the biggest U.S. retailers. The S&P 500 barely budged and fell by less than 0.1%, coming off its first loss after setting an all-time high in three consecutive days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 33 points, or 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite edged up by less than 0.1%. Novo Nordisk's stock that trades in the United States rose 3.7% after the Danish company said U.S. regulators approved its Wegovy drug as part of a treatment for a liver disease found in many overweight and obese people. Soho House, a membership club with locations around the world, jumped 14.9% after announcing a deal where an investor group led by hotel-operator MCR would pay $9 in cash for its shares. Several of the country's largest retailers, meanwhile, were mixed ahead of their profit reports that are scheduled for later in the week. Home Depot, which will report on Tuesday, slipped 1.2%. Target rose 1.9% ahead of its report on Wednesday, and Walmart added 0.7% before its report on Thursday. They, along with companies like Estee Lauder and Ross Stores, could offer a look at how different types of U.S. households are holding up when the job market seems to have morphed into one where relatively few workers are getting fired but also hired. Just like a small group of wealthy households are separating from the rest of the country, a handful of Big Tech companies are dominating the U.S. stock market, in part because of a boom in spending around artificial-intelligence technology. This separation of 'haves' and 'have nots' in the stock market could be increasing the risk, with many companies potentially facing trouble if the economy stagnates and inflation is high, according to Lisa Shalett, chief investment officer at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. The danger is that investors could look at how much the broad S&P 500 index has surged since its low point in April and 'extrapolate the success of the few to the gains of the many.' On Friday, the focus will swing to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which has been the home in past years of many big policy announcements from the Federal Reserve. There, Fed Chair Jerome Powell will give a speech, and investors are hoping to hear how his mind has changed about interest rates since he said last month that he wanted to wait longer before cutting interest rates. The fear at that time was that President Donald Trump's tariffs could push inflation higher. Now, though, the bigger fear could be the slowing U.S. job market following a disappointingly weak report on employment that arrived just after the Fed's last meeting. The Fed's twin jobs are to keep the job market healthy while also maintaining a lid on inflation, and helping one can often hurt the other in the short term. Lower rates can boost the economy by making it cheaper for U.S. households and businesses to borrow to buy houses, cars or equipment, for example, but they also risk worsening inflation. Inflation updates since the Fed's last meeting have come in mixed, further muddying the picture, but traders are nevertheless strongly expecting the Fed to cut its main interest rate for the first time this year at its next meeting in September. The hope is that Powell could give a nod to that. Expectations for cuts to interest rates have pulled Treasury yields lower lately, and they largely remained there on Monday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury held at 4.33%, where it was late Friday. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 edged down 0.65 to 6,449.15. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 34.30 to 44,911.82, and the Nasdaq composite added 6.80 to 21,629.77. In stock markets abroad, indexes mostly fell in Europe in their first trading after Trump's inconclusive summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday about the war in Ukraine. Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday. In Asia, indexes were mixed, with Japan's Nikkei 225 rising 0.8% and South Korea's Kospi falling 1.5%.
