BeMC starts cleanliness & sanitation drive, to cover all 42 wards
Berhampur: The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has launched a week-long mass cleanliness-cum-sanitation drive under the 'Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Swachhata' campaign. The drive, which started on Aug 9 and will continue until Aug 14, will be conducted at vulnerable garbage points covering all 42 wards. A toilet cleanliness drive was also conducted in Golapalli Sahi and Mango Market on Monday. "Our aim is to make the drive a mass movement with the involvement of people," said Kalyani Sanghamitra, BeMC deputy commissioner (sanitation). Besides focusing on cleanliness, the civic body also conducted different competitions among school and college students, and members of women self-help groups (SHGs) based on the theme of 'Independence Day'. "A 'jhoti' competition on Har Ghar Tiranga was held among the SHG members, where they showcased their artistic skills," she said. The Har Ghar Swachhata campaign assumed significance, particularly in Berhampur, as its ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 dropped to 75 and 64 at the national and state levels, respectively. On the other hand, 15 out of 18 urban local bodies (ULB) in Ganjam district received 'garbage-free city' (GFC) rating in the survey. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Wildlife Cameras Capture The Unthinkable Ohi Blog Undo BeMC was adjudged the cleanest city in the state in the Swachh Survekshan in 2019 and 2020. The Gajapati administration has decided to distribute around 1 lakh national flags as part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign. "We have provided the flags to block development officers. They will distribute them through the SHG members," said Timan Bara, district project officer, Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM). The distribution will begin on Wednesday. He said the flags were stitched by the members of at least 10 SHGs. "They will receive Rs 25 per flag," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). BeMC takes steps to tackle waterlogging
Berhampur: With the south-west monsoon expected to set in early this year, Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has stepped up preparations to tackle waterlogging and other water-related issues in the city. BeMC mayor Sanghamitra Dalei and other officials have visited several vulnerable areas. She ordered the removal of encroachments from the drains and to speed up drain de-siltation works. On Sunday, she visited Jaya Prakash Nagar, an area that witnesses flooding every monsoon. "We have undertaken the de-siltation works of the drains in different wards. The work is going on in full swing and is expected to be completed before the arrival of the monsoon," said Kalyani Sanghamitra, deputy commissioner (in-charge of sanitation) of the BeMC. She said they also coordinated with the National Highway and public works department (PWD) to clean the major drains in the city under their departments. Two major drains, Bahana nullah and Sapua nullah of the drainage division flow inside the city. While Sapua nullah does not pose a major problem, the 14-km long Bahana nullah in the city, however, created waterlogging in the low-lying areas during the rainy season. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kickstart your new journey with the Honda Shine 125 Honda Learn More Undo "Ahead of the arrival of the monsoon, we undertook to clean the 14-km long drain in the city. The work is expected to be completed by June 15," said Bishnu Prasad Panigrahy, executive engineer, drainage division. Around Rs 12 lakh would be spent on de-siltation of Bahana nullah this year, he said. He said they decided to conduct a joint survey by BeMC soon to identify the vulnerable areas and take preventive measures to avert waterlogging. The city experienced pre-monsoon rains in the last three days. The civic body officials claimed there was no major problem witnessed in the city during the pre-monsoon showers. Besides cleaning the major drains, the BeMC needs to undertake an eviction drive from the drains, said Sandhyarani Sukla, corporator (ward no. 4). T. Kishore Kumar Patro, another corporator (ward no 6), urged the authorities to cover all the drains before the onset of the monsoon to avoid drowning incidents.
