Real-Life Saiyaara: Director Mohit Suri's Own Love Story Is No Less Than His Superhit Film
Mohit Suri is currently basking in the blockbuster success of his latest directorial Saiyaara, a film that has tugged at the nation's heartstrings and is rewriting box office records. But the man behind some of Hindi cinema's most passionate love stories, think Zeher, Kalyug, Aashiqui 2, and Ek Villain, isn't just a romantic on screen. He's a hopeless romantic in real life too. In a candid conversation with NDTV, Mohit Suri opened up about how he manifested the love of his life and wife, actor Uditaa Goswami. "I still feel like that boy who was sitting outside Amar Juice Centre in Mumbai, looking up at her hoarding from Paap (Uditaa Goswami's debut Hindi film which released in 2003), and saying I want to marry this girl. I didn't even know who she was. I just said it. And, I guess the universe was listening," said Mohit Suri, who directed Uditaa Goswami in his 2005 directorial debut Zeher. Mohit Suri recalled telling Paap 's director Pooja Bhatt, who is one of his first cousins, about the moment, never imagining that it would turn into reality. "I went for a (film) trial and Pooja introduced me to her. She said, 'Uditaa, this is Mohit. He wants to be a director, and he wants to marry you.' It was very embarrassing... But I guess that's when our love story really began." Today, the couple has been together for over 21 years. They tied the knot in 2013 and are parents to two children. "Even now, I feel excited when she praises me, and upset when she doesn't talk to me. She fights with me sometimes and says, 'You've left all your emotions for your films.' But I'm still that same boy in love with her," the director said. While Saiyaara continues to win hearts on screen, it's Mohit Suri's real-life love story that proves he's not just directing romance, he's living it.

Why Ahaan Panday, Aneet Padda's Saiyaara is Still The Biggest Trend On X
'Why am I still seeing Saiyaara posts on my feed?" That's a valid question. Clever marketing, yearning for a romantic movie, new faces or just exhaustion by the action trope cinema – Mohit Suri's Saiyaara has ticked some important boxes and more. The film starring debutant Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda is only on its fourth day in the cinema halls and has reportedly crossed the 100-crore barrier. While movie critics may have differing opinions on its quality and the execution by the upcoming actors, there's no denying the fact that Suri is a seasoned campaigner in this genre (Kalyug, Awarapan, Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain, Malang) and the fictional world he has created with Saiyaara has resonated with the masses.

This Actress Married To Saiyaara Director Mohit Suri Was Emraan Hashmi's Co-Star, Is Now Alia Bhatt's Sister-In-Law
Mohit Suri's film Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has captivated audiences. Suri is married to a former actress who has worked with John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi. Filmmaker Mohit Suri's Saiyaara, which served as a launchpad for Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has become a rage. The film has struck a chord with audiences of all ages, with a fan going to the extreme of walking into the theatre with an IV drip in hand. By now, most of us know quite a bit about Ahaan and Aneet – but did you know Mohit Suri is married to a popular actress from the mid-2000s? His sister, too, was the lead star of a superhit film alongside Kunal Kemmu. For those unversed, Saiyaara director Mohit Suri is married to Udita Goswami, who has appeared in hit films such as Paap (2003) with John Abraham and Zeher (2005), Aksar (2006) with Emraan Hashmi. Her last film was Diary Of A Butterfly in 2012, post which, she decided to quit films forever and focus on her marriage and family. She is now exploring new feats as a DJ. When did Mohit Suri and Udita Goswami get married? Mohit and Udita dated for nine years before getting married in 2013. They are parents to two children – a daughter and a son. Also, Mohit and Alia Bhatt share a close family bond as first cousins. Mohit's mother, Heena, is the sister of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, making him Alia's maternal cousin. Interestingly, Mohit belongs to the previous generation, being older than Alia. This makes Udita, Alia's sister-in-law. Mohit and Emraan Hashmi, too, are second cousins, both belonging to the prominent Bhatt family. Mohit's uncle is Mahesh Bhatt, while Emraan's father, Anwar Hashmi, happens to be Mahesh Bhatt's brother-in-law. A year after their wedding, Udita appeared in an interview and said that she is enjoying quitting the world of glam and living the life of a housewife. An IANS report quoted her saying, 'I am enjoying being housewife, honestly. I know I am gaining weight, doing all of that but I have not had the pleasure of doing this ever before so I am enjoying it." Mohit Suri, too, once said that he owes his success to his wife. 'Udita is the reason we are a couple because she works much harder in this relationship than I do. She lets me be the person who I am in every way and understands how I am, which means a lot to me. I can't take away her contribution towards my success," Suri told IANS in a group interview. 'She tells me 'Mohit, be the way you are. Don't try to change yourself'. She does not have the pressure of proving something to be a director's wife. She never tells me 'Take this much money'. She handles all my money and gives me pocket money," he added. She is Smilie Suri, Mohit Suri's younger sister. He launched her in the film, however, her career didn't take off as expected. She then sparsely appeared in films and also worked in TV and OTT shows. On the work front front, Mohit Suri has directed superhit films such as Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain, Murder 2, and Malang, and now Saiyaara. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 19:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Saiyaara Movie Review: Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda land the notes in Mohit Suri's nostalgia song
A Mohit Suri film is a mood. In his latest Saiyaara, Vaani Batra (Aneet Padda) explains to Ahaan Panday's Krish Kapoor the difference between hit songs and memorable ones. 'The popular ones? You listen to them for four months and then forget them,' she says. 'But the other ones make you time travel. Towards your childhood, towards your first love, towards…rain.' For a millennial Hindi cinemagoer like me, Saiyaara too feels like a time machine. It took me back to earphone-on metro rides, brooding songs from Kalyug (2005) or Awarapan (2007) giving unnecessary weightage to a school breakup. Or a class bunk to watch Aashiqui 2 (2013) with a crush and then regretting the decision after witnessing the climax (it doesn't end swell). Saiyaara made me relive old memories but I am not sure if it created any new ones. It isn't a new, catchy track but actually a reprise. A throwback. A compilation of Mohit Suri's greatest hits.

Why Has Saiyaara Starring Ahaan Panday And Aneet Padda Resonated With Gen Z?
Last Updated: Saiyaara has resonated with Gen Z as Mohit Suri's directorial musical romantic drama starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda does impressive numbers at box office. Fun activity: Name at least five Bollywood movies released in the last couple of months. Now, tell us something: Did you have to Google that, or are you well-versed in Hindi movies hitting the theatres and quietly leaving them without a trace? Saiyaara has, somehow, emerged to be an anomaly here. Directed by Mohit Suri, yes, the same director who launched Kunal Khemu 20 years ago with Kalyug, has returned to the scene and managed to collect the biggest opening for a movie in his career yet. How did that happen? What Is Saiyaara? If clicking on this article made you go 'what is a saiyaara", you may be in the minority, but that's okay. Suri, the director, presented two new faces – debutant Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. Saiyaara, under the Yash Raj Films banner, hit the theatres on Friday, 18th July to rave reviews online and offline. The fact that the movie's soulful music has received appreciation has only helped the movie get the legs despite the new faces the audience had to work with (yet again!) on the big screen. As for the plot, we wouldn't want to spoil it for you. Why Saiyaara Has Worked For Gen Z 'Why is #Saiyaara getting such a crazy response?" an X user by the handle @NishitShawHere asked his fellow Bollywood buffs. The answers quickly poured in. 'Maybe Gen Z is tired of watching overly muscular, VFX heavy 50+ year budhha romancing actresses young enough to be their granddaughters (sic)," wrote one user in response. A break from seeing old actors romancing actresses half their age has come as a breather, say fans. 'Man, let this generation have some youth romance contents (even if it's just mediocre) where the male actor isn't pushing 40 and the actress in 20s. Where male lead doesn't look like he hasn't taken a shower for years and the pathetic cringe 'heroic" dialogues (sic)." 'Gen Z is done with the same old faces & cringe tropes. We want fresh talent, age-appropriate stories, and relatable vibes no forced 'Dishoom Dishoom" or random songs, (sic)" remarked another user. 'Because people of our generation yearn for real love — the kind that says, 'I'll stay, I'll keep holding on to you even if you don't remember a thing about me.' Love that is not confused and weak. Love that endures through everything, in health and in sickness." 'Sick and tired of same old action and senseless movies. Nice to see a young romcom after long, that too with fresh faces! (sic)" In summary, young fans appreciate that the movie captivates audiences without relying on heavy visual effects, major celebrities, or relentless, physics-defying action sequences. The age-appropriate romance is what they had been looking for and Saiyaara fulfils their demand on that front. News18 Showsha gave the film 3.5/5 stars. 'What truly elevates the screenplay is the scintillating chemistry between the lead pair. Mohit taps into the rawness and naivety of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda and weaves a story with a beating heart. Saiyaara isn't experimental, it isn't novel, and it isn't spiffy, but it has a lot of heart. Ahaan, as Krish does a fantastic job. What an incredible debut! He delivers an act that can make even the experienced and seasoned envious," an excerpt from the review read. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Viral Bhayani (@viralbhayani) According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Saiyaara has reportedly collected Rs 20.50 crore by 11:30 pm on Day 1. This is Suri's highest first-day opening for any film in his entire catalogue, including Murder 2 (2011), Aashiqui 2 (2013), Half Girlfriend (2017).
