Quick rescue saves 30 Indonesians after boat capsizes in Malaysian waters

KOTA TINGGI: A passing vessel played a crucial role in the dramatic rescue of 30 Indonesian nationals after their boat capsized 19.3 nautical miles northeast of Tanjung Penawar on Tuesday morning (May 20). Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Johor maritime operations deputy director Maritime Captain Kama Azri Kamil said the vessel was in the vicinity of the incident and immediately moved in to render assistance. All 30 individuals were successfully pulled from the sea by the crew before maritime authorities arrived on the scene. 'MMEA then deployed several of its assets to the location to aid in the rescue operation where all 30 survivors have been transferred to the vessel,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (May 21) Following the initial rescue, the MMEA and Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) launched a coordinated response. The Johor Baru Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC), which had been alerted by Basarnas in Tanjung Pinang at around 9am, activated a full search and rescue operation. Kama Azri said MMEA deployed several of its assets to the scene and took over the care of the survivors, who had been safely taken aboard the vessel that had first responded. Once all survivors were accounted for and the rescue efforts concluded, MMEA escorted the vessel to the maritime boundary with Indonesia, where the rescued individuals were handed over to Indonesian authorities. Kama Azri praised the timely cooperation between Malaysian and Indonesian maritime agencies, stating: 'This operation's success is the result of strong cross-border cooperation and the quick action of everyone involved,' he said. He added that MMEA remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard lives at sea and will continue joint operations with regional partners to enhance maritime safety.

MMEA foils attempt to smuggle meth worth RM10mil

BATU PAHAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs, believed to be methamphetamine worth RM10 million, in the waters off Sungai Ayam here at 1am on May 16. State deputy director of operations, Maritime Captain Kama Azri Kamil said the seizure, the largest in the past five years, was achieved through intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of a fibreglass boat in the area. He said a patrol boat was deployed to inspect and intercept the vessel but the suspects, upon noticing the authorities, sped off into shallow waters before jumping off and escaping into the mangrove forest. "Two suspects are believed to have escaped, leaving behind a boat with a 200-horsepower outboard engine. "Upon inspecting the boat, they found 12 sacks filled with plastic packages containing crystalline powder believed to be methamphetamine," he told a press conference at the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone today. Kama Azri said each sack weighed 25kg, bringing the total seizure to 300kg, adding that the drugs could have fed the habit of over a million addicts. He said the seized items, including the fibreglass boat, were taken to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone, with the case being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. "MMEA will not compromise and will continue to intensify operations and enforcement to curb cross-border criminal activities," he added. – Bernama

Johor MMEA thwarts bid to smuggle syabu worth RM10mil into country

BATU PAHAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Batu Pahat zone foiled an attempt to smuggle 300kg of syabu worth RM10mil into the country. Johor MMEA deputy operation director Capt Maritime Kama Azri Kamil said the smuggling was thwarted off Sungai Ayam waters at 1am on Friday (May 16). 'The operation was conducted following intelligence reports of suspicious movements of a foreign fibreglass boat in the area,'' he said in a statement. Capt Maritime Kama Azri said an MMEA enforcement unit was deployed to the area after detecting the presence of the boat from Indonesia. He said upon realising the presence of the authorities, the suspect fled to the shallow area of the river before jumping into the mangrove forest. Capt Maritime Kama Azri said the boat, which had no registration number, had been abandoned in a hurry by the suspect to escape the authorities. 'Upon inspection on the boat, we found 12 sacks filled with plastic packages containing crystal power believed to be methamphetamine,'' he said, adding that each sack weighed about 25kg. Capt Maritime Kama Azri said the seized items were brought to the Batu Pahat MMEA Zone for further investigation and the case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. 'We view cross-border criminal activities in our waters seriously, especially drug smuggling and illegal immigrants attempting to enter our country,' he said. Capt Maritime Kama Azri called upon the maritime community and local residents to continue channelling information to the authorities to assist them in combating maritime-related criminal activities.
