MMEA foils attempt to smuggle meth worth RM10mil

BATU PAHAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs, believed to be methamphetamine worth RM10 million, in the waters off Sungai Ayam here at 1am on May 16.
State deputy director of operations, Maritime Captain Kama Azri Kamil said the seizure, the largest in the past five years, was achieved through intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of a fibreglass boat in the area.
He said a patrol boat was deployed to inspect and intercept the vessel but the suspects, upon noticing the authorities, sped off into shallow waters before jumping off and escaping into the mangrove forest.
"Two suspects are believed to have escaped, leaving behind a boat with a 200-horsepower outboard engine.
"Upon inspecting the boat, they found 12 sacks filled with plastic packages containing crystalline powder believed to be methamphetamine," he told a press conference at the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone today.
Kama Azri said each sack weighed 25kg, bringing the total seizure to 300kg, adding that the drugs could have fed the habit of over a million addicts.
He said the seized items, including the fibreglass boat, were taken to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone, with the case being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
"MMEA will not compromise and will continue to intensify operations and enforcement to curb cross-border criminal activities," he added.

Hannah Yeoh files bankruptcy notice against Kamarul Zaman for failing to pay over RM400,000 in damages

On May 30, Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman ruled in Hannah's favour and ordered Kamarul Zaman to pay RM400,000 in damages for the defamatory remarks he made eight years ago. 15 Aug 2025 04:11pm On May 30, Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman ruled in Hannah's favour and ordered Kamarul Zaman to pay RM400,000 in damages for the defamatory remarks he made eight years ago. - Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR - Segambut Member of Parliament (MP) Hannah Yeoh has filed a bankruptcy notice against Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff for failing to pay her more than RM400,000 in damages and costs ordered by a High Court for defaming her eight years ago. Her lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, said the notice was filed at the High Court here last July 9. "Kamarul Zaman failed to pay the damages of RM400,000 and costs of RM80,000 ordered by the High Court on May 30, so we have commenced bankruptcy proceedings against him. "However, we were not able to serve the bankruptcy notice on Kamarul Zaman, therefore we obtained an order from the court on July 29 to serve it through alternative services, including newspaper advertisements," she said when contacted by reporters today. Meanwhile, Sangeet Kaur said Kamarul Zaman had applied to stay the court's decision last July, as he had filed an appeal against the decision at the Court of Appeal She said that since the application for the stay will only be heard on Aug 28, Hannah is entitled to enforce the court's judgment of May 30. On May 30, Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman ruled in Hannah's favour and ordered Kamarul Zaman to pay RM400,000 in damages for the defamatory remarks he made eight years ago. Judge Aliza, in allowing Hannah's claim, said there was no merit in Kamarul Zaman's submission that she lacked locus standi to initiate the suit. The defamation suit, filed in 2022, arose from two Facebook posts made by Kamarul Zaman between May 10 and May 17, 2017, in which he alleged that Hannah had a proselytising agenda and was using her political platform to advance Christianity. He also cited her autobiography, Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey, as evidence of her purported Christian agenda, further alleging that she sought to turn Malaysia into a Christian nation. In his statement of defence, Kamarul Zaman denied that the posts were defamatory and asserted that his statements were justified. - BERNAMA More Like This

Improper Installation, Display Of Jalur Gemilang Can Lead To Legal Action

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Any offence related to the improper installation or display of the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) that could cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public concern can lead to legal action. The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) stated today that all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty and for complying with the laws and guidelines in effect regarding its use. "The AGC views seriously any act of displaying, hoisting, or installing the Malaysian flag in a disorderly or improper manner," the statement said. The AGC noted that among the reported incidents of the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down were at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, and at a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. Other incidents included the display of an incomplete Malaysian flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results report book and on the official social media accounts of several local newspapers. Meanwhile, the AGC also reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands against anyone suspected of being involved in such acts. "This includes raiding the premises of the suspected parties, sharing personal information or making reckless accusations on social media, provoking or threatening the individuals or organisations involved, and taking over the role of authorities, such as ordering the flag to be taken down or seizing the materials involved without legal authority. "All complaints or related information should be channeled to the authorities for appropriate action in accordance with the principle of the rule of law," the AGC said. -- BERNAMA
