AP man gets 10-year rigorous imprisonment for raping minor daughter

GUNTUR: A special POCSO court in Guntur has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 for sexually assaulting his minor daughter. The offence occurred in Narasaraopet in September 2024 and was registered at the Two-Town Police Station. The girl, a fifth-grade student, was living with her father following her parents' separation. On the night of 7 September, the accused, reportedly in an inebriated state, misbehaved with her. Distressed, the child fled to a neighbour's house and narrated the incident. The matter was later taken up by an NGO and reported to child welfare officials. Based on the complaint, police booked a case under relevant sections of the POCSO Act. Palnadu SP Kanchi Srinivasa Rao monitored the case, with Inspector T Ashok leading the investigation under DSP K Nageswara Rao and CI Haimarao. Public Prosecutor Barkat Ali Khan ensured robust evidence presentation. Judge Shammi Parveen Sultana Begum delivered the verdict. SP Rao commended the investigation and court-monitoring teams for their diligent efforts.

Police officials stay overnight at villages in Palnadu to reassure public safety, raise awareness on safe practices

Acting on the instructions of Palnadu district Superintendent of Police Kanchi Srinivasa Rao, police teams conducted 'Palle Nidra' (Village Stay) programme on the night of June 1 in sensitive villages across the district to build trust and ensure law and order. Police officers camped overnight at Kanaparru (Nadendla mandal), Thurumella (Rompicherla mandal), Cheemala Marri (Nakarikallu mandal), Bodavada (Gurazala mandal), and the 22nd ward of Sattenapalli town. They engaged directly with villagers to understand local issues and reassure the public of their safety, Mr. Srinivasa Rao told The Hindu on Monday. The police warned that any involvement in anti-social or disruptive activities would invite strict legal consequences. The officers also conducted awareness sessions on cybercrime, urging residents not to click suspicious URL links or share OTPs, and to report such incidents immediately by calling 1930. Emphasising road safety, people were urged to always wear helmets and to prevent minors from riding two-wheelers. Community responsibility in preventing illicit activities like gambling and illegal liquor sales was also emphasised, the SP said. Women were encouraged to download the government's Shakti app to report any safety concerns. The programme saw participation from local police officials, including the sub-inspectors from Nakarikallu, Rompicherla, Gurazala, Sattenapalli, and Nadendla.

Eight injured as private bus overturns in Palnadu district

Eight people sustained injuries after Chirala-bound private bus from Hyderabad overturned near an Indian Oil petrol filling station at Shantinagar village in Nakirikallu mandal on Saturday morning.
