TSA warns travelers of scams in the airport
HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) — We all have our routine when we travel, and for many, that looks like charging up your phone before you board your flight. Although the reality is that scammers are everywhere, and they are using this as a way to steal your information. Salmonella outbreak: Cucumber products sold at Walmart, Kroger stores recalled 'Somebody might have left a USB cord, and you're like, 'Oh, wow, this is great….I don't have mine with me…. let me just plug in here,'' said Karen Reeves. 'That's where the malware can be downloaded, either in the cord or the actual USB port.' The TSA is now warning travelers of scammers who are using a tactic known as 'juice jacking.' 'That is where you might plug in to a public port, maybe at the airport, and malware is downloaded onto your phone or someone access your, accesses your sensitive information,' said Reeves. She is the CEO of the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama. She said you should stay away from group charging ports and only plug into the individual port under your seat. 'Bring your own charger with you,' she said. 'Keep that phone locked while you're charging. Another thing, keep your software updated because that's what will help protect your phone and your information as well.' 📲 to stay updated on the go. 📧 to have news sent to your inbox. If you can, she said bringing your own portable charger is the safest method. When it comes to Wi-Fi, she said scammers can also get your personal information if you are on the free, public Wi-Fi. 'Avoid pubic Wi-Fi because you don't know who has access to that, and anyone could access your information,' she said. She recommends you set up a personal hotspot. If you see any type of scam, they ask that you report it to 'Scam Tracker.' You can find it on the Better Business Bureau website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Watch out for scams when getting your Star ID
ALABAMA (WHNT) — The May 7th date is looming for fliers. That's the date TSA will start asking for a real ID or 'Star ID' if you're in Alabama. Trooper Brandon Bailey with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said this form of identification creates a safer, more secure way for people to fly. 'We can securely identify who you say you are when you get on these planes and try to cut down and make traveling a safer experience for everybody,' he said. Alabama Attorney General announces lawsuit against TikTok, ByteDance Inc. Although millions across Alabama are scrambling to get the ID, you'd rather get caught waiting in line than lose your identity to a scam. 'You've got to have multiple forms of ID for this, said Karen Reeves. 'That's why it does open us up for identity theft. So if we were to go to a bogus website and put all this information in, someone would have everything they needed, you know, for identity theft.' That's why the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama is warning people against scammers offering an easy 'order online option.' 'It is federally required that you show up in person to get a star ID, and that comes back to just simply so we can identify, we can lay hands on those documents and we can scan them in and so we can certify them,' said Bailey. While you should make it a priority to get the real ID if you plan to fly in the near future, it's key to know who and where to give your information. 'Scammers always want you to feel a sense of urgency, so I would just say take a few minutes, think about it, go to the actual the DMV website, and it's going to give you all the information there,' Reeves website has all the required documents to get your Star ID, including where you can make an appointment. Golden Apple: Karen Reeves
WAYNESBORO, Ga (WJBF) Karen Reeves is all about History at Edmund Burke Academy. From 9th grade all the way to graduation, she has you covered. 'I teach U.S. History, A.P. U.S. History, Junior Comp, World Affairs, and Military History,' Reeves says. And even though History is the name of the subject, Mrs. Reeves makes sure the subject matter connects to today's events. 'We just did that today. In fact, we just did it in this classroom. There is nothing in history that does not connect to the present. There's nothing in history that doesn't connect. It's one continuum. So, I enjoy sharing that with my kids from my perspective so they can see how it applies in their lives today, because it does.' Mrs. Reeves is a 19-time Star Teacher Award winner. But she still has the energy and enthusiasm of someone who is just starting out. 'Well, you're only as good as your last day. But I have to say, I feel like I'm doing what I'm meant to do. The Lord's in my classroom. And as long as He wants me in the classroom, then even on the days that aren't so exciting or that are challenging, it's my responsibility to be here to fulfill that sort of mission.' Congratulations Karen Reeves and thank you for a lifetime of teaching. A lifelong dedication to the leaders of tomorrow. 'I want them to learn the lessons that history teaches us,' she says. 'And I want them to apply those lessons in their lives later on. And I want them to know that from my perspective, the Lord is always with them and that those lessons in History reflect that.'
