Casson Leads In Trifecta For Mark Casse In Woodbine's Victoria

Casson Leads In Trifecta For Mark Casse In Woodbine's Victoria originally appeared on Paulick Report. Casson, under Rafael Hernandez, bested stablemates Jupiter and Rude Procedure and led in a 1-2-3 finish for trainer Mark Casse in the $125,000 Victoria Stakes (L) on Saturday afternoon at Woodbine. Advertisement Earlier in the week, assistant trainer Kathryn Sullivan wondered what it would be like to see the Casse trio, all debut winners, go up against one another in their first stakes appearance. Sullivan was undoubtedly pleased with the result in the 5½-furlong main track engagement for 2-year-olds. Rude Procedure and first-time starter Valley of Kings vied for the lead steps out of the gate, but it was Casson, off a step slowly, who would seize control strides before the opening quarter in :22.79. The roan colt continued to lead the way and widened his advantage over Rude Procedure. Hernandez called upon a confident Casson into the turn for home as the duo looked to separate themselves from their pursuers, while Jupiter split foes, looking to track down the free-wheeling frontrunner. Advertisement Ahead by three at the stretch call, Casson glided to the wire a 2 ½-length victor. Jupiter was second, 2¾ lengths ahead of Rude Procedure. Fistfulofmoney was fourth and Valley of Kings was fifth. The final time was 1:04.31. 'He broke a little slow,' said Hernandez. 'He was outside, so he broke a little bit out, and when I tapped him in the shoulder, he started picking up. So, I let him cruise. 'My horse was just kind of waiting for me to start moving there to give me a second gear. I had total confidence.' It was the second straight superlative showing from Casson, who is named after A. J. Casson, a member of the famed Canadian group of artists known as the Group of Seven. Advertisement A son of Caravaggio out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Zee Ro Drop, Casson turned heads after a dazzling debut win on May 11 at Woodbine. Sent on his way as the 3-5 choice, he was in command at every call in the 4 ½-furlong main track maiden special weight sprint, crossing the wire a four-length winner in :52.69. Owned by Manfred and Penny Conrad, and bred by Ballycroy Training Centre & Villa Rosa Farms, Casson was purchased for $200,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he was presented by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. He returned $9.20 for the Victoria win. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jul 12, 2025, where it first appeared.

How High Did Blue Origin New Shepard Really Go?

This image taken from video provided by Blue Origin shows the New Shepard rocket blasting off in ... More West Texas, Monday, April 14, 2025. (Blue Origin via AP) Blue Origin launched its New Shepard suborbital rocket system into space on April 14th carrying a famous group of passengers into space. In the aftermath of the flight, there has been celebration, criticism and everything in between. As a former NASA scientist, I will leave that banter for other formats and stick to a science question that some of you may be curious about. How high did the Blue Origin NS-31 mission actually go, and did they really make it to space? This image provided by Blue Origin shows from left: Jeff Bezos, Kerianne Flynn, Katy Perry, Lauren ... More Sanchez, Aisha Bowe, Gayle King, Amanda Nguyen, Sarah Knights, director of Blue Origin's astronaut office, and Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp. (Blue Origin via AP) For the answers, I will turn to the pioneers of U.S. space travel, NASA. The flight aboard the autonomous, reusable rocket named for Alan Shepard, the first American in space, lasted 11 minutes. It is reported that the rocket system ascended to an altitude of roughly 66 miles. According to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory website, '…. the edge of space – or the point where we consider spacecraft and astronauts to have entered space, known as the Von Karman Line – is only 62 miles (100 kilometers) above sea level.' By that definition, NS-31 definitely reached space, but how does it compare to other things in space? As an atmospheric scientist, I thought it would be interesting to frame the discussion in terms of the atmospheric layers. Most of us will never leave the troposphere. They zipped through the stratosphere and into the mesosphere. Layers of the atmosphere. My friend and colleague Dr. Kathryn Sullivan flew on three Space Shuttle missions and became the first American woman to walk in space. She went on to serve as the NOAA Administrator and became the first woman to dive to the Mariana Trench, the lowest point on Earth. The Space Transportation System or Space Shuttle was designed to operate between about 120 to 600 miles. However, its highest altitude achieved was an altitude of roughly 386 miles when it released the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. Kathryn Sullivan was the first American woman to walk in space. Other reference points that may be familiar to you include the International Space Station, which is in a low Earth orbit that can vary between 200 to 250 nautical miles. The Moon is a little over 238,000 miles from Earth, and the Sun is 93 million miles from Earth. The Blue Origin mission barely breached the threshold for space, but they did it. The mission probably has garnered more media attention this week than many of NASA's 135 Space Shuttle missions between 1981 and 2011. Those historic missions and the pioneers associated with them should not be forgotten. This point may is likely the source of some of the cynism out there. NASA and other space-faring organizations have never stopped exploring space, studying Earth, and advancing technology. They continue to blaze trails. Others have joined the journey too. FORT WORTH, TEXAS - APRIL 8: The moon begins to eclipse the sun on April 8, 2024 in Fort Worth, ... More Texas. Millions of people have flocked to areas across North America that are in the "path of totality" in order to experience a total solar eclipse. During the event, the moon will pass in between the sun and the Earth, appearing to block the sun. (Photo by) However, this Blue Origin moment should not be dismissed. If anything, it has science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in your newsfeed. STEM is critical to our lives, so I cannot hate on any opportunity to celebrate it or expose it. I do have one request though. Let's celebrate the scientists, engineers, programmers, and other key personnel too.
