Floods, heavy traffic, floating trash reported amid Habagat rains in NCR

The effects of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat caused flooding, heavy traffic, and floating debris in some areas in Metro Manila on Tuesday, according to reports on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita. In Manila, commuters and motorists faced knee-deep floods on Roxas Boulevard, P. Ocampo Street, UN Avenue, and Kalaw Avenue, Katrina Son reported. Commuters spent a longer time getting a ride as jeepneys and buses were already fully loaded. Some vehicles were also seen passing through the floods. The Philippine Navy deployed their vehicles to aid stranded people. In Quezon City, trash covered the flooded areas on G. Araneta Avenue, A. Bonifacio Avenue, and Quezon Avenue going to E. Rodriguez Avenue. Plastics and woods were floating in the floods. Residents were having difficulty passing the affected streets. Some people woke up early to scavenge in the area. Caught in a video, a kid was rescued after getting washed away by the strong current of flood and falling into a hole of a road repair site in Batasin Hills. In Valenzuela City, the floods reached up to the second floor of some houses near Tullahan River, according to a report of Susan Enriquez. Around 800 people with their pets evacuated to Valenzuela National High School in Barangay Marulas. The power supply in the school was interrupted. In Marikina City, the water level in Marikina River reached 18.7 meters around 1 a.m., which prompted the raising of the third alarm status, according to a report of EJ Gomez. Under the third alarm, forced evacuation of residents near the river or in low-lying areas will be imposed. Some rescuers from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reminded concerned residents of the mandatory evacuation. As of 12:45 a.m., a total of 22,104 residents were staying in 36 evacuation centers. Vehicles near the river were moved and parked on the bridge. At 5:23 a.m., the water level went down to 17.7 meters, then at 6 a.m., the water level was at 17.5 meters, according to the Marikina Public Information Office. In North Luzon Expressway, slow traffic was observed on the southbound lane at the Valenzuela exit due to vehicles that broke down in the middle of the chest-deep flood, Ivan Mayrina reported. Tow trucks already responded to the area. Pot holes were also seen on the road that also affected the flow of traffic. On the northbound lane, some vehicles were passing through the flood. Some vehicles were also stuck at the Meycauayan toll plaza, according to a report of Jhomer Apresto. The toll plaza was closed around 9:00 a.m. on Monday and reopened at 12:54 a.m. on Tuesday. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Marcos to leave for World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to visit the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan and attend business meetings, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said Wednesday. 'President to leave for Osaka, Japan for World Expo and business meetings,' PCO said. The PCO has yet to announce the specific departure date of the President, as well as other details. The World Expo 2025 was opened to the public on April 13. The Department of Tourism said over 40,000 people visited the Philippine Pavilion in just nine days. GMA Integrated News' Katrina Son earlier reported that the Pavilion, named "Woven," draws inspiration from traditional Filipino weaving techniques to symbolize the interconnectedness of the nation's heritage and aspirations. The centerpiece 'Dancing with Nature' also brings visitors to the 'living elements of the natural world.' The World Expo will run until October 13, 2025.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News

Floods, lack of equipment in some schools ahead of Balik Eskwela 2025

Several schools across the country were flooded on Sunday, a day before the opening of School Year 2025-2026, with some reporting a lack of facilities such as tables and chairs. At least five classrooms in Frances Elementary School in Calumpit, Bulacan have been submerged by the floods, some of which have had their ceilings collapsed, following the recent rains and the high tide, as reported by Katrina Son on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. Floods have also hit Doña Damiana De Leon Macam Memorial Elementary School, where administrators have put up makeshift pathways for students to avoid the water. The water level in the area rose past 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, and is expected to wane down during the evening. Freddie Pareñas Collado, a teacher at the Roberto E. Madayag Child Development Center in Kiamba, Sarangani was also forced to stack the tables and chairs in his classroom to higher ground, as the surrounding areas have been flooded. In Cebu, teachers of the Don Vicente Rama Memorial Elementary School have continued to prepare for the school year, but have reported a lack of tables and chairs. They will temporarily use old chairs, monobloc chairs, and folding tables for the meantime. GMA Integrated News is still trying to reach out to the Department of Education (DepEd) for comment on the matter. In Dagupan City, meanwhile several public schools will implement class shift schedules due to classroom shortages and flood-prone areas made worse by the rainy season and high tide. Dagupan City has 31 public elementary schools and eight public high schools, including three integrated schools. However, many students will have no classrooms to use when classes open, according to the Schools Division Office. 'There's a lot of shortages sa classroom natin,' Dr. Rowena Banzon, Schools Division Superintendent, said. Some schools will adopt shifting schedules not only because of limited space, but also due to flooding caused by the rainy season and rising tides. Schools are prioritizing the use of flood-free classrooms for student safety. In Quezon City, one school was hit not by flood but by fire. A fire broke out at San Francisco High School in Barangay Bagong Pag-asa at around 11 a.m. Sunday morning, with firefighters able to declare the fire out at 11:58 a.m. According to Vonne Aquino's report on 24 Oras Weekend, the fire resulted in some P3 million worth of damage. Twenty rooms were affected, including 11 classrooms, a conference hall, the library, and other areas. Firefighters and school staff worked together to get some equipment out of the affected buildings. The start of classes will proceed on Monday, but in the school's covered court, the report said. Over 37,000 police officers are expected to be deployed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the opening of classes on Monday. The academic year will run from June 16, 2025 until March 31, 2026, marking the return to the pre-pandemic school calendar. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Philippine culture, artworks take centerstage at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan

Philippine culture and artworks took centerstage at the Philippine Pavilion at the Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. According to Katrina Son's report in "24 Oras" Friday, among the artworks that were featured include handwoven pieces with multimedia projections that seemingly transport viewers to the different regions of the Philippines. "These are all made of abaca, so the artists weaved abaca to be the canvas for the art piece and then we printed our art piece on it," Philippine Pavilion creative director Chochay Garcia said of a woven artwork. "And then as you can see, there are strips here. They've been cut into strips and then reweaved together, inserting different materials that are endemic to the Philippines," she added. Many attendees admired the handwoven pieces at the Philippine Pavilion, including OPM icon Jose Mari Chan and European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro. "We've been showing our Japanese friends the island where we were born in Iloilo. Today, this is the first pavilion that we came to, I wanted our Japanese guests to appreciate our pavilion, " said Jose Mari Chan. Meanwhile, Filipino Romer Arguelles, who visited the pavilion with his family from Dubai, was recognized as the 300,000th visitor. "Very surprising. Nakakataba ng puso na nagkaroon pa ng ganito na pang 300,000. Dapat kung bibisita ka lang din sa expo, dito ka dapat una pumunta. Be proud of your country," said Romer. Attendees also took part in the Philippine cultural dances performed at the expo, while others tried traditional hilot massage. Philippine cuisine also shone at the pavilion through Hain, where halo-halo, adobo, and okoy were served to the attendees. According to the report, cultural performances will be held at the Philippine Pavilion on Saturday, June 7, for Philippine National Day. —CDC, GMA Integrated News
