72 homeless people rescued in Madurai under ‘Kaval Karangal'
Madurai: As many as 72 homeless people have been rescued under the 'Kaval Karangal' initiative between March and Aug, city police commissioner J Loganathan said on Wednesday. Out of the rescued, 32 elderly people were reconnected with their families, while others received medical care in Government Rajaji Hospital and were sent to govt-aided homes.
Speaking to reporters, Loganathan said that the initiative, which was already a big success in Greater Chennai Corporation, was adopted in Madurai city too and undertaken with the help of various NGOs.
He also said that WhatsApp groups with the public have proved fruitful in identifying issues. "We can prevent anything if we get information on time," he said. All 100 wards have a group with at least 100 members. He added that their social media cell was also receiving a lot of complaints on platforms like Instagram and email.
On the upcoming Vinayaka Chathurthi festival, the commissioner said the same rules from the previous year will prevail, and a similar number of idols are likely to be permitted.
Loganathan also returned lost mobile phones that were recovered to the owners. Between March and Aug, a total of 299 mobile phones valued at 44,85,000 were recovered by the city crime branch. Of these, 103 were retrieved from Tallakulam, 54 from Thilagar Thidal, 48 from Thideer Nagar, 31 from Tiruparakundram, 28 from Temple Circle, 23 from Anna Nagar, six from Avaniyapuram, four from South Gate Circle, and two from Sellur.
As of this year, 577 lost mobile phones have been handed over to the owners.
