Madurai: As many as 72 homeless people have been rescued under the 'Kaval Karangal' initiative between March and Aug, city police commissioner J Loganathan said on Wednesday. Out of the rescued, 32 elderly people were reconnected with their families, while others received medical care in Government Rajaji Hospital and were sent to govt-aided homes.
Speaking to reporters, Loganathan said that the initiative, which was already a big success in Greater Chennai Corporation, was adopted in Madurai city too and undertaken with the help of various NGOs.
He also said that WhatsApp groups with the public have proved fruitful in identifying issues. "We can prevent anything if we get information on time," he said. All 100 wards have a group with at least 100 members. He added that their social media cell was also receiving a lot of complaints on platforms like Instagram and email.
On the upcoming Vinayaka Chathurthi festival, the commissioner said the same rules from the previous year will prevail, and a similar number of idols are likely to be permitted.
Loganathan also returned lost mobile phones that were recovered to the owners. Between March and Aug, a total of 299 mobile phones valued at 44,85,000 were recovered by the city crime branch. Of these, 103 were retrieved from Tallakulam, 54 from Thilagar Thidal, 48 from Thideer Nagar, 31 from Tiruparakundram, 28 from Temple Circle, 23 from Anna Nagar, six from Avaniyapuram, four from South Gate Circle, and two from Sellur.

Kerala Doctor Duped Of Rs 4.43 Crore In Online Trading Fraud; 2 Arrested

Kannur: The Kerala Police's cyber crime unit arrested two men from Chennai in connection with a sophisticated online trading fraud that defrauded a doctor in Kannur of Rs 4.43 crore, officials said on Monday. The accused, identified as Mehbubasha Farooq and Rijaz, were arrested by the Kannur City Cyber Crime Police from Chennai on Sunday evening, said an officer at the Kannur Cyber Police Station. Farooq is a resident of Chennai, while Rijaz hails from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district and has been settled in Chennai, he added. The duo allegedly operated a fraudulent scheme through WhatsApp, promising the victim substantial returns on investments in a fake online trading platform. The police said that the accused lured the doctor, a resident of Mattannur in Kannur district, into a WhatsApp group that promoted an online share trading plan, assuring him of significant profits in June. The victim was directed to deposit the funds into various bank accounts as part of a "wealth profit plan" under a fake company's guise, identified as Upstock. 'We have traced about Rs 40 lakh deposited by the accused in their accounts. Besides this, the police detected as many as 18 more accounts in the name of various individuals to transfer the money earned through online fraud. The matter is under investigation now,' said the officer. He said that a part of the money was found to have been transferred abroad, adding that further details could not be disclosed at this stage. He said that no terror angle was found during the investigation. Though the trading app would show the profits earned, he found the platform unresponsive and could not withdraw the amount, prompting him to approach the police to file a complaint with the police on June 25. "The victim was led to believe he was making lucrative investments, but the entire setup was a sham," the cyber police said. The police said the cybercrime team apprehended the accused by tracing their bank account numbers and mobile phones used for the crime. A detailed investigation was launched, and the police were able to trace the financial trail to the two accused in Chennai, leading to their apprehension. The officer said that they are now probing the possibility of a wider network and other victims involved in this online fraud.

₹8,000 for a flat tyre? Some lessons to learn from a Gurugram man's ordeal

A Gurugram resident's visit to a local puncture kiosk to fix a flat tyre burnt a hole in his pocket after his tyre was allegedly damaged by the mechanic to inflate the repair cost and he had to shell out Rs 8,000 to get a new tyre. Claiming that he was targeted in a tyre puncture scam, Pranay Kapoor, who shared his ordeal in an Instagram post, said he noticed his car's dashboard warning light indicating a flat tyre. He drove to the nearest petrol station, where a staff member examined the tyre and said it needed to be removed for a proper check. Once the car was lifted, the worker sprayed soapy water over the tyre, brushed it across the surface, and removed a visible screw. He then claimed there were four punctures in total, each requiring a 'mushroom patch' costing Rs 300, bringing the total repair cost to Rs 1,200. The real damage Sceptical, Kapoor skipped the repair and visited a trusted tyre shop. There, a qualified technician found only one genuine puncture. The other holes, he alleged, were likely created using a sharp, thorn-like tool. Kapoor's tyre ultimately had to be replaced, costing him Rs 8,000. 'Don't make the expensive mistake I made,' he said in his video, urging viewers to share his experience. How the trick works? Such frauds often follow a set pattern: · The worker draws attention to a visible object, like a nail or screw. · While 'checking' the tyre, they discreetly poke additional holes. · Multiple repairs are suggested, each charged individually. The added 'repairs' can make a damaged tyre irreparable, forcing the customer to make an expensive replacement. Things to keep in mind · Get a second opinion: If possible, drive to a trusted tyre shop before authorising repairs. · Stay present: Watch the inspection closely; avoid leaving the tyre unattended. · Check tools: Keep an eye on workers' tools before starting. · Know the prices: Mushroom patch repairs usually cost Rs 150 - Rs 400 in most cities.

Kerala young woman's death takes a twist; friend arrested for abetment to suicide, sexual abuse

The case related to the unnatural death of a young woman witnessed a twist when the Ernakulam Rural police in Kerala on Monday (August 11, 2025) arrested her friend on charges of abetment to suicide and alleged sexual abuse on the promise of marriage. The arrested was identified as Rameez, 24. The 23-year-old woman was allegedly found hanging in her house at Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 9, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case of unnatural death. However, the police stumbled up on a suicide note, reportedly written by the deceased, during the preparation of mahazar on Sunday. 'Based on the accusations in the suicide note, we took the accused into custody on Monday. After interrogating him, we have invoked additional charges against him. The two had been batchmates during graduation at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry. However, Rameez seems to have backtracked and had not been attending her calls or even responding to her messages of late. He also blocked her on WhatsApp,' said the police. The accused has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc) and 108 (abetment to suicide). He was also booked under BNS Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) on charges that he slapped her. Though the suicide note allegedly accused Rameez and his family of allegedly attempting to convert her religion, the police said that 'other than the usual friction when two persons were from different religions, there was nothing much to read into it for the time being.' The victim's family has also since then allegedly raised the question of conversion. The police, however, said the two families have had reconciled to the marriage despite the difference in their religions. 'Even the victim seems to have agreed to convert and her only condition was that she would not stay at the house of the accused. She insisted on moving out on rent, which the accused seems to have stonewalled. That, coupled with the indifference shown by the accused to the victim of late, seems to have led to the death. However, we will further investigate and see if more people are involved,' the police said. (Suicide prevention helpline: Disha - 1056, 0471-2552056)
