Anwar defends Nurul Izzah's appointment as PKR's new deputy president, rejects claims of nepotism

Anwar slams the narrative being played out by some quarters and stressed that Nurul Izzah's credibility, like other leaders in the party, should be fairly assessed based on her strength and contributions to the party's struggle. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (May 24): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refuted allegations of nepotism regarding the selection of his daughter Nurul Izzah as the new deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), insisting that the appointment was made through a democratic process and received the open support of party members. Anwar, who is also PKR president, slammed the narrative being played out by some quarters and stressed that Nurul Izzah's credibility, like other leaders in the party, should be fairly assessed based on her strength and contributions to the party's struggle. 'Responding to allegations of nepotism made by some quarters, I recall the time when my wife (Datuk Seri Dr Wan) Azizah Wan Ismail) emerged to lead this party at its most difficult time, when all instruments of power were used to extinguish the torch of Keadilan's struggle. At that time, no voice was heard accusing her of nepotism. 'However, when (Nurul) Izzah progressed through the democratic process and openly gained the support of party members, this accusation was suddenly made,' Anwar said in a Facebook post today. Yesterday, Nurul Izzah scored a landslide victory in the PKR election, defeating incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli to be appointed as deputy president for the 2025-2028 term, which saw a significant change in the party's top leadership. Nurul Izzah, 44, obtained 9,803 votes compared to Rafizi's 3,866, making her the first woman to hold the party's number two position which was previously dominated by male leaders. Anwar said PKR cannot be trapped in the enemy's narrative and must firmly fight against narratives that try to distort the party's struggle. 'We are not afraid of being tested because Keadlian was born from undergoing various tests. We are not afraid of being criticised because Keadilan was founded on the courage to fight tyranny and injustice,' he said. He said PKR would continue to be the voice of the people by raising an economic agenda that defends the vulnerable, tearing down the walls of oppression and consistently driving reform and governance that is more transparent, clean and authoritative. The PKR president also called on the party's leadership and members to continue to uphold the principles of justice, strengthen integrity and firmly reject narrow politics based on racism and slander that are the playthings of the opposition. According to Anwar, PKR is not just a political party, it is a platform for struggle built on the sweat, tears and confidence of the people that this country can be managed more justly, equitably with principle. 'Therefore, our loyalty should not be to individuals, but rather to the ideals of this struggle. Let's rise together, move in unison and strengthen the ranks of the struggle so that we are better prepared to face the challenges of election. This struggle is not over yet,' he said. – Bernama anwar ibrahim authority deputy president nepotism nurul izzah pkr struggle

Defeated Nik Nazmi calls for unity following PKR polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Outgoing PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has called on party members to close ranks and uphold the party's ideals following the conclusion of the recent party elections. Nik Nazmi said it was time to move past differences and work together to ensure the party remains steadfast in its reformist agenda. "Now is the time for us to set aside our differences and ensure that Keadilan emerges from this test of power with its ideals intact, carrying a vision and agenda to serve and uplift the people," he said in a Facebook post today. While acknowledging that the results were not what his team had hoped for, Nik Nazmi thanked party delegates for their support and commended his campaign team for their tireless efforts. "We fought hard, and I deeply appreciate the dedication of my team throughout the campaign," he said. He also extended his congratulations to the newly elected leadership, wishing them well in carrying out their responsibilities. "Whatever lies ahead, I remain committed to serving the nation with all my heart and soul," added the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister. Nik Nazmi, who has served as vice-president since 2022 and is regarded as one of the key figures in the party's reformist movement, was among those defeated in the contest for the vice-president post. The official results saw Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan and Chang Lih Kang winning the four vice-president slots. Nik Nazmi also failed to retain his position as Setiawangsa PKR division chief, losing to challenger Datuk Afdlin Shauki in the party's divisional elections held today. Afdlin, a renowned actor and film director, secured 631 votes to defeat Nik Nazmi, who garnered 563 votes.

Fadhlina Hopes New PKR Wanita Leadership Will Uphold ‘Kita Keadilan' Spirit

JOHOR BAHRU, May 23 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek hopes the wing's new leadership will be able to uphold the spirit of 'Kita Keadilan' championed by the party. The Education Minister said the new leadership must also strive to address and resolve any internal misunderstandings and mistrust to ensure the party's continued strength and unity. 'Looking ahead, the focus is on strengthening the party, reinforcing its ideology, and prioritising programmes and activism within the party. 'Insya-Allah, whoever is appointed, we hope they will carry on the programmes and deliver better outcomes than before, including revisiting the modules of SWAN (Sekolah Wanita Keadilan) as well as MADANI programmes which have had a significant impact on the people,' she said when winding-up debate during the 18th PKR Wanita Congress at the Danga Bay Convention Centre here today. The Nibong Tebal MP also expressed hope that the new leadership will give full attention to preparing the party for the upcoming general election. 'The new leadership must be given time and space because we are in a very crucial period to build up the party ahead of the elections,' she said. Fadhlina, who is defending her post in the party election, expressed appreciation to all delegates and the leadership team for supporting her in leading the wing. The election for the Wanita chief post will see a straight fight between Fadhlina and Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail. -- BERNAMA

Campaigns that belittle leadership, threaten the party cannot be tolerated- Fadhlina

BUKIT MERTAJAM: PKR Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek said any form of campaigning that belittles the party's leadership, disregards official decisions, or threatens the party should not be tolerated in the run-up to the party elections. She said party members have been reminded from the start that the contest to elect the national leadership for the 2025–2028 term must be conducted in a spirit of unity, grounded in party discipline. "That's why I take full responsibility in ensuring that campaigns which seek to undermine leadership, belittle decisions made through syura (consultative meetings), or involve threats against the party, must not be allowed to take place. "I believe we must stand firm on this matter, we have been reminded from the beginning that this is a family contest and we must stay true to that agenda. "Therefore, we must be firm when it comes to meeting discipline, the decisions that have already been made and what has been agreed upon," she said during the Temu Rapat Akar Umbi programme for the northern zone with Nurul Izzah Anwar last night. Fadhlina said the party was built on collective strength and no one has ever been sidelined throughout the party's history. "Everyone has a role, some are currently fulfilling that role, others will continue it. But each member has their place and no one has ever been marginalised at any point in Keadilan's (PKR) history," she said. Fadhlina, who is the Nibong Tebal member of Parliament, said that candidates running in the party election should focus their campaigns on the service and value they aim to offer and not on attacking others. She added that a leader like Nurul Izzah, who possesses deep passion for the party, strong sensitivity to societal needs and a solid understanding of policy and the party's core principles, is essential in strengthening unity within the party. "We must ensure that this party truly reflects our aspirations by ensuring it is led by individuals who are sincere and genuinely committed to bringing the party to where it rightfully belongs. "Leadership cannot be driven by ego, nor should it involve belittling others. Leading means listening to the grassroots, because they are the pulse of Keadilan," she said. Fadhlina is set to be challenged by Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail for the position of PKR Wanita chief, while Nurul Izzah will face off against Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in a highly anticipated contest for the deputy president post. The PKR National Congress, including the Youth and Wanita's Congress, is scheduled to take place from May 21 to 24 in Johor Baru, with voting day set for May 23.

Resignation threats may cost PKR members the chance of re-election

KEPALA BATAS: PKR may take disciplinary action against division committee members who threaten to resign following the recent divisional elections or attempt to disrupt the smooth running of the upcoming PKR national congress. Its communications director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic) said such individuals may also be blacklisted from contesting if a re-election is required due to their resignation. 'The secretary-general mentioned earlier that some divisions have committee members threatening to step down simply because they disagree with or dislike the elected division chief. 'She stated that if such action is taken, the party election committee, together with her, has decided that should a re-election become necessary, all those involved may be blacklisted and barred from contesting again,' he told reporters after attending the Jelajah Kita Keadilan event here on Thursday night, which was also attended by PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Fahmi was responding to the action of a group of division committee members from Lenggong and Masjid Tanah who had threatened to resign because of dissatisfaction with the results of the party's divisional elections last month, Bernama reported. Fahmi, who is the Communications Minister, said that after further clarification was provided to both division committees, the members decided to reconsider and withdrew their resignation plan. He added that the election process had been lively and peaceful, with no incidents of violence, property damage or public disturbance, making this round of elections more effective and better managed than in the past. On preparations for the PKR congress in Johor Baru, Fahmi said arrangements are progressing smoothly. The Jelajah Kita Keadilan roadshow, organised by the secretary-general's office and the party election committee, has already visited several locations. 'The programme will continue until next week. It's a positive and neutral initiative. We do not allow bloc or group campaigning. Even on polling day, the use of 'cai' (preferred candidate lists) will not be permitted. 'I've reviewed the election system. All candidates are contesting as part of the greater Keadilan family,' he said. The PKR national congress, including the AMK and Wanita congress, will take place from May 21 to 24, with polling scheduled for May 23.
