Sabah To Host National Unity Week 2026
GENERAL LABUAN, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang today announced that the ministry will host the national-level Unity Week 2026 in Sabah. He said this when officiating the Unity Week Celebration and the Golden Jubilee of the Rukun Tetangga (KRT) 2025 for Labuan at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex. Unity Week, organised under the Kembara Perpaduan Malaysia MADANI framework, aims to foster a spirit of unity while promoting understanding and appreciation of Malaysia's diverse traditions and cultures. The celebration also serves as a platform to strengthen social integration and build a sustainable ecosystem of national unity. Aaron highlighted that Labuan stands as an example of harmony, where cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity coexist peacefully. He noted that Labuan recorded the highest score in the 2021 Malaysian Happiness Index, at 9.29, reflecting a very high level of happiness among its residents. 'To further strengthen social bonds at the community level, KPN (National Unity Ministry) through the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) has established 37 Rukun Tetangga areas across Labuan,' he said. Aaron said the Rukun Tetangga movement marks its 50th anniversary this year. Over the past five decades, KRT has played a vital role in community safety patrols, neighbourhood development, fostering good neighbourly spirit and promoting national unity. This year's celebrations feature a range of activities including a Rukun Tetangga Golden Jubilee exhibition, Cultural Night performances, Early Childhood Education exhibition, Unity Fun Run and Walk, Rukun Tetangga Economic Exhibition and Sale, as well as exhibitions by government departments and agencies. --BERNAMA

[UPDATED]: Government seeks to nurture 'Madani citizens'
KUALA LUMPUR: The government sees the nurturing of "Madani citizens" as a core foundation in shaping the nation's social system and future direction under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the tabling of the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat today, said values of ethics, spirituality and humanity — rooted in Maqasid Syariah and a spirit of patriotism — will continue to be strengthened as the foundation for shaping Madani citizens who are guided by principles, grounded in identity, and noble in character. According to the plan, this will be achieved through education reforms, compulsory preschool at age 5, and programmes that instil patriotism, civic responsibility, and volunteerism. Programmes on patriotism, volunteerism and national unity will also be expanded to cultivate a society that is tolerant, caring and socially responsible. Anwar said programmes such as Kembara Perpaduan Malaysia would be continued to foster unity across diverse communities through values-based education and open intercultural dialogue. "The government will also introduce the 'Piagam Harmoni Malaysia' as a main guide for interfaith and inter-ethnic relations, while reforming the National Service Training Programme to align with current needs. "National identity will be strengthened not through coercion, but through understanding and a spirit of togetherness," he added. The plan also highlights initiatives to strengthen civic awareness, expand opportunities for children with special needs, and provide lifelong learning so that no Malaysian is left behind in the development process.
