Technopark jobs grow 27 per cent over past five years

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Had it been a local body, Technopark would have surpassed Kerala's several municipalities in terms of total population! India's first IT park, which turns 35 years this month, currently provides jobs to over 80,000 people. In the past five years, Technopark achieved a significant growth in terms of the number of jobs and software exports by companies. 'The number of employees rose by 27%, from 63,000 in 2020-21 to 80,000 in 2024-25. And 45% of them are women. The park ensures a secure and empowering environment for women,' said IT Secretary Sambasiva Rao. Revenue from software exports registered 56% growth in four years - from Rs 8,501 crore in FY 2021 to Rs 13,255 crore in FY 2024 (data for FY 2025 is unavailable). With a total builtup space of 12.72 million square feet, the park now hosts over 500 IT/ITeS companies including MNCs, SMEs and Startups. Technopark's founding CEO G Vijayaraghavan, termed the five-year growth a positive development. 'This achievement should be viewed in the backdrop of the IT industry's stagnation globally. 27% growth in jobs is a big feat and we have the potential to achieve more,' he told TNIE. 'Economic development via job generation park's motto' 'At the time of its inception, many were sceptical about our goal of providing 5,000 direct and 25,000 indirect jobs. Technopark was an early bird and time has proved us right. Economic development through employment generation is the park's motto,' he said. According to the IT secretary, several factors contributed to the park's growth despite adversities like the pandemic. 'We could effectively explore the rising demand for digital transformation services globally. The increased traction for Global Capability Centres, the state's robust innovation and skilling system and the government's infrastructure and startup support initiatives were other factors,' Sambasiva Rao said. 'Kerala is unique for its good connectivity, greenery and availability of clean air and water. With low operating costs, high quality social infrastructure, and rapidly evolving urban amenities, the state's cities are emerging as ideal destinations to work, live and thrive. We are fast becoming a hub for investments in technology and other priority sectors,' Sambasiva Rao said. 35 years of Technopark Established in July 1990 Fully owned by Kerala Government 1994: 2 companies, 155 employees, built-up space of 1.07 lakh sqft 2024: 500 companies, 80,000 employees, built-up space of 12.72 million sqft

Kerala: K-SWIFT registered enterprises to get temporary building number

Thiruvananthapuram, June 30 (UNI) Aligning with its Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) initiatives, the Kerala Government now allows enterprises registered through the K-SWIFT (Kerala Single Window Interface for Fast and Transparent Clearance) platform to obtain temporary building numbers. The government had amended the Kerala Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Non-Industry Facilitation Rules, 2020, to incorporate this provision in order to facilitate businesses to secure clearances and certificates fast without being entangled by procedural delays. Fast issuance of approvals will particularly help new enterprises to secure loans and other services, for which building identification is mandatory. With the amendment to the rules, enterprises with investments of up to Rs 50 crore registered through K-SWIFT are eligible for a temporary building number which is valid for up to three and half years, during which the enterprise must obtain a permanent building number. This provision enables businesses to commence operations and access services like bank loans without waiting for the permanent building number and is also expected to create a more conducive environment for investors by streamlining administrative processes. The temporary building number corresponds to the number on the Acknowledgement Certificate issued upon application submission through K-SWIFT. Acknowledgement Certificate obtained through K-SWIFT is a key document that allows enterprises, specifically those not categorized under the 'Red' category as per the Pollution Control Board guidelines, to commence operations without obtaining prior approvals under various state enactments. Set up by the state's primary investment promotion agency, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), K-SWIFT is a one-stop destination for securing all approvals from multiple departments in the state to start, operate and expand businesses. Governor-government row over ‘Bharat Mata' assumes a combative dimension

The stand-off between the Kerala Government and Raj Bhavan over the contentious use of the 'Bharat Mata' motif at functions attended by Governor Rajendra Arlekar showed scarce signs of easing on Thursday. Furthermore, it appeared to assume a combative dimension with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan notifying Raj Bhavan that only Constitutionally mandated national symbols were permissible at functions attended by the Governor. The arguably tense entanglement also seemed to escalate, with the Governor's office reportedly lodging a formal objection to General Education Minister V Sivankutty's 'protocol-breaching boycott' of an official event attended by Mr. Arlerkar, citing the placement of the 'Bharat Mata' motif at the venue. Officials said Raj Bhavan had also taken strong exception to the bedlam that broke out on Kerala University Senate Hall premises on Wednesday, where Students Federation of India (SFI) and Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists protested Mr. Arlerkar's attendance at a function organised by a private trust to observe the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. Again, the positioning of a Bharat Mata picture, bearing a saffron flag and near a lion, on the stage emerged as the bone of contention. Officials said the Raj Bhavan communique appeared not to be a riposte to Mr. Vijayan's letter. They said the letter appeared to stand separate of the issue raised by Mr. Vijayan. The government had objected to Raj Bhavan's use of the Bharat Mata motif at official functions on the premise that it was a brazenly non-secular depiction of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) notion of a Hindu Rashtra. The Cabinet concluded that the Constitutionally mandated protocol set in stone forbids the use of such 'political and religious' iconography in State functions. The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) found itself in rare agreement with the government. It accused Raj Bhavan of 'superseding' national symbols, such as the national flag and the national anthem, by using images and rituals with political and religious overtones and objected to the 'unauthorised' practice of paying obeisance to the 'RSS's Bharat Mata portrait' at the Governor's public functions. Notably, All India Congress Committee General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, MP, petitioned the President of India against the position of the Kerala Raj Bhavan. Meanwhile, Raj Bhavan dug its heels in on its stated position that Bharat Mata was emblematic of a unified India and on par with other national symbols.

He was speaking at a district-level meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the Kerala Government's fourth anniversary celebrations. The government is now entering its tenth year. During this period, some have tried to present a different picture by hiding the truth. There is a narrative that development activities are hindered due to economic crises. However, those who observe societal changes understand that this is not the case. The government presents an annual progress report with the awareness that people need to know the facts, the chief minister said. Kerala recorded a growth of 72.84 percent in its Gross State Domestic Product for the year 2023-2024. Tax revenue, which was ₹47,000 crore three years ago, has now increased to ₹81,000 crore. The gap between public debt and domestic production is lower than in previous years. There has been significant progress in the startup sector. Kerala has become one of the most important hubs for startups. While there were 640 startups in 2016, the number has now risen to 6,300. Investments in the state's startups amount to ₹5,800 crore. The government aims to increase this number to 15,000 startups by 2026, which will create over one lakh jobs. Kerala has achieved many accomplishments that the country can be proud of.
