Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that New Kerala is not just a concept to be imagined but something to be made a reality in the present times.
He was speaking at a district-level meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the Kerala Government's fourth anniversary celebrations.
The government is now entering its tenth year. During this period, some have tried to present a different picture by hiding the truth. There is a narrative that development activities are hindered due to economic crises. However, those who observe societal changes understand that this is not the case.
The government presents an annual progress report with the awareness that people need to know the facts, the chief minister said.
Kerala recorded a growth of 72.84 percent in its Gross State Domestic Product for the year 2023-2024. Tax revenue, which was ₹47,000 crore three years ago, has now increased to ₹81,000 crore. The gap between public debt and domestic production is lower than in previous years.
There has been significant progress in the startup sector.
Kerala has become one of the most important hubs for startups. While there were 640 startups in 2016, the number has now risen to 6,300. Investments in the state's startups amount to ₹5,800 crore. The government aims to increase this number to 15,000 startups by 2026, which will create over one lakh jobs. Kerala has achieved many accomplishments that the country can be proud of.
The state has transformed into a modern knowledge production centre .
Along with the Digital Science Park, projects to establish three more science parks, each with an investment of ₹200 crore, are underway. Efforts are ongoing to increase the number of companies and employees in IT parks. Kerala's contributions include the country's first Digital University, Digital Science Park, Graphene Innovation Centre, Kochi Water Metro, and the Virology Institute in Thiruvananthapuram.
Preparations are also underway for the innovative Ayurvedic Research Institute, Geno Data Centre, and Medical Technology Consortium, among others.
Kerala was behind in attracting industrial investments earlier. Since the Left government came to power, legal and regulatory changes have created an industry-friendly environment. This also changed the mindset of people. Many enterprises have started, creating new employment opportunities.
Kerala is a state with low poverty levels. Strengthening the public distribution system has yielded great benefits, with around 4.25 lakh priority ration cards made available. On November 1, Kerala will be declared the first state in India without extreme poverty. Kerala has achieved the number one position in many areas nationally. It has also become a state free from communal conflicts and riots.
The government has increased welfare pension amounts, benefiting 60 lakh people.
Under the Life Mission scheme, more than 4.5 lakh houses have been provided. Over four lakh land title deeds have been distributed, and steps are being taken to expedite further distributions.
The Ardram Mission has brought significant improvements in healthcare. Public education has also improved considerably. Kerala has three universities ranked in the top twelve nationally in higher education. Agricultural growth reached 4.64 percent.
The Chief Minister said everyone should appreciate the development of the state and acknowledged the progress and positive changes in all sectors.
V. Sivankutty, Minister for General Education and Labour, who presided over the event, said that many projects once considered impossible have been successfully implemented by the people's government, and this is history in the making.
The event was attended by GR Anil, Minister for Food Civil Supplies; Ramachandran Kadannappally, Minister for Registration, Archaeology and Archives; A.A. Rahim, Member of Parliament; Dr. V.K. Ramachandran, Vice-Chairman of the Planning Board; Mayor Arya Rajendran; MLAs Kadakampally Surendran, Antony Raju, CK Hareendran, VK Prashanth, V Sasi, G Stephen, OS Ambika, DK Murali, V Joy, K Ansalan; District Collector Anukumari; prominent figures from social, political, cultural, and industrial sectors; experts from various fields; beneficiaries of various schemes; and officials.

‘Sink City, Koodagram': Hooda takes shot at BJP govt over Gurugram's urban woes
NEW DELHI: Congress MP on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led union and Haryana government over worsening civic infrastructure in Gurugram, calling it a "sink city" and "Koodagram." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now His remarks came during the question hour in Parliament, where he raised concerns about recurring issues such as waterlogging, sewage mismanagement, and poor sanitation in the city. Speaking to news agency ANI after the session, Hooda said he had questioned the government about the deteriorating urban conditions in Gurugram, one of India's leading corporate and IT hubs. "I asked what steps are being taken to address serious urban challenges. In response, Minister Khattar claimed no citizen is facing infrastructure-related problems and that all urban development schemes are underway," said the Rohtak MP. Rejecting the minister's response, Hooda added, 'the real situation is known to the people of Gurgaon, Haryana, and even nationally and internationally. The BJP government, in eleven years, has turned Millennium City into a 'Sink City'. Today, companies are rethinking their presence in Gurugram." Hooda further alleged that many of the city's core infrastructure projects were initiated during the Congress tenure and that progress has stagnated under BJP rule. 'We are ready for a debate on this. The government must accept there is a problem and take corrective action,' Hooda added. Gurugram continues to struggle with seasonal flooding, traffic congestion, and waste management, despite its reputation as a business and technology hub.

Judges Can't Claim Immunity If Allegations Have Sufficient Substance: SC On Justice Varma's Plea
Justice Varma had also sought quashing of the May 8 recommendation by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, urging Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against him The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a judge cannot claim immunity if allegations are found to have sufficient substance, an observation that would have a far-reaching impact on the judiciary's autonomy. While dismissing Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma's plea seeking invalidation of an in-house inquiry report finding him guilty of misconduct in the cash discovery row, the top court observed a judge cannot claim immunity, citing abrogation of fundamental rights or breach of scheme for his/her removal if allegations are found to have sufficient substance. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A G Masih said that the Chief Justice of India bears a significant moral responsibility as the foremost judicial officer to ensure that the judiciary of the country functions in a transparent, efficient and constitutionally appropriate manner. 'We have no hesitation to say that the CJI is not a mere post office between the committee and the President/the Prime Minister, that the report is to be forwarded without any remarks/recommendations. The CJI is clearly an important person, if not the most, in the larger scheme of maintaining institutional interest and credibility to ascertain whether a Judge has indulged in misconduct," the bench said. The Supreme Court also said that the in-house inquiry is not a mechanism for the removal of a judge and no action can be taken merely on the committee's report. 'Nature of inquiry in the instant case is preliminary, ad-hoc and not final as well as not violative of any principle of natural justice… The in-house inquiry or its report forming part of the procedure in itself does not lead to the removal of a Judge, unlike the constitutionally ordained procedure….We reiterate that a stitch in time saves nine," it remarked. The top court also noted that the Inquiry Act does not debar the Judge charged with misbehaviour from raising an effective defence by presenting such evidence as is admissible and relevant once the evidence of the witnesses supporting the charge is recorded. 'If any reliance is placed by the committee under the Inquiry Act upon the report of the Committee prepared under the procedure, the Judge charged has a right to be informed, whereupon it shall be open to him to raise such points as to non-reliability/non-acceptability thereof as are available in law," it said. What Justice Varma Said? In his petition, Justice Varma submitted that the inquiry 'reversed the burden of proof", requiring him to investigate and disprove the charges levelled against him. Alleging that the panel's findings were based on a preconceived narrative, he said the inquiry timelines were driven solely by the urge to conclude proceedings swiftly, even at the expense of 'procedural fairness". The petition contended that the inquiry panel drew adverse findings without affording him a full and fair hearing. view comments First Published: August 07, 2025, 18:31 IST News india Judges Can't Claim Immunity If Allegations Have Sufficient Substance: SC On Justice Varma's Plea Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
