KADA, NAFAS Boost National Agriculture Through Tautan Tani Programme

KOTA BHARU, July 24 (Bernama) -- The collaboration between the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) and the National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) is expected to strengthen the country's agricultural sector through the enhancement of input supply chains and more structured, strategic capacity-building for farmers, said KADA chairman Khalid Abdul Samad. He expressed appreciation to NAFAS for its willingness to be KADA's key strategic partner in implementing the Tautan Tani programme, which he described as an essential platform for elevating the status of the agricultural sector. "The close cooperation between KADA and NAFAS is a timely and strategic move to ensure national food security, especially in today's context, which demands multi-stakeholder collaboration to address the challenges of the agro-food sector. "I am confident that the combination of KADA's expertise in area development and human capital, along with NAFAS' strength in logistics and agricultural input supply chains, can create a more sustainable, productive, and competitive agricultural ecosystem," he said during today's launch of the Tautan Tani programme here. Khalid said such programmes are a manifestation of both agencies' commitment to strengthening agricultural knowledge and practices among farmers, while also promoting a thriving culture of collaboration within the industry. "The initiative of organising product introduction talks and factory visits is an effective effort to augment farmers' understanding of the agricultural input value chain, while also raising awareness on the proper and efficient use of fertilisers. "Farmers must be informed consumers who understand fertiliser contents, the functions of nutrients and their impact on crop yields, and the use of pesticides that must adhere to safety guidelines to ensure quality harvests and environmental protection," he said. He said that the briefing that KADA conducted on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is crucial in ensuring that the country's agricultural produce meets international standards to penetrate the global market. "The sharing sessions by farmers are also significant as they provide opportunities to learn from one another, share successes, techniques, and innovations from the field, which are often more practical than theory alone," he said.

Unity govt not threatened by 14 BN + 14 PH strategy in Melaka polls, says Khalid

KOTA BHARU: The proposal of 14 Barisan Nasional + 14 Pakatan Harapan strategy in the upcoming Melaka state election will not threaten the Unity Government, said Parti Amanah Negara communications director Khalid Abdul Samad. However, he said the strategy has not yet been finalised and a decision would only be made after all component parties held discussions and negotiations. "In this Unity Government, we will often hear such calls, which is just normal but in the end we will sit down and discuss and negotiate together if there is any need for that. "Although we are facing the Melaka PRN separately, the seat negotiations will be done for the entire country, even though other areas have not yet to hold elections, but when we negotiate, it will involve the entire country," he said. He told reporters after the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (Kada) chairman's morning assembly with staff at Kada headquarters, here on Sunday (May 11). Earlier, the media reported that various parties rejected the DAP proposal which appeared a Chinese-language newspaper report titled '9 DAP Melaka Branches approve the resolution of a 14 BN + 14 PH strategy' in the upcoming Melaka state elections. On Saturday (May 10), Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that his party is maintaining the basic principle agreed upon by Barisan and Pakatan to defend the seats won respectively in the last Melaka state elections. Melaka has 28 state seats, involving 21 controlled by Barisan, Pakatan (five) and Perikatan Nasional (two). For the record, the term of the Melaka legislative assembly is scheduled to end in November next year. - Bernama

KADA acts to protect rice crops during Southwest Monsoon

KOTA BHARU: The Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) has taken several proactive measures to prevent rice crops from being affected during the Southwest Monsoon, said its chairman Khalid Abdul Samad. He said current efforts include ensuring an uninterrupted water supply, cleaning irrigation canals and drainage systems, preparing the Kemubu 3 Pump Station, and reinforcing the remaining sheet piles. He said KADA also received an allocation of RM20 million from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security under post-flood funding for infrastructure repairs, farm road improvements, and irrigation system maintenance. 'With the Kemubu 3 Pump Station and the soon-to-be-completed sheet pile reinforcement, we hope to overcome water supply shortages, especially during dry spells. 'In addition, cleaning operations for the irrigation and drainage systems have had a positive impact in ensuring smooth water supply for crops. We will also use higher-quality seeds and fertilisers during this season to ensure optimal harvests,' he said. He told reporters this after attending the KADA chairman's morning assembly with staff at the KADA headquarters here today, which was also attended by KADA general manager Mohd Faizul Mustafa. Previously, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the Southwest Monsoon is expected to begin on May 10 and continue until September, driven by consistent southwesterly winds across the region. Khalid said KADA now aims to achieve a rice yield of eight tonnes per hectare, after recording five tonnes per hectare in the previous season. 'As of today, total harvested rice stands at 44,931.9 tonnes, a significant increase compared to only around 11,997 tonnes in the first season. Although we've only harvested about 43 per cent so far, the yield is already higher than last season. 'Productivity has reached five tonnes per hectare, compared to four tonnes previously. Some areas have even hit eight tonnes, though that is limited to certain locations. 'We need to study what was done in those high-yield areas and apply the same practices elsewhere to increase output. While the ministry's target is around six tonnes per hectare, we're hoping to exceed that,' he said.
