Bahrain Advances Restoration of Historic Municipal Building in Manama

The restoration of the historic Municipal Affairs building in Manama has surpassed 60% completion, following an inspection visit by Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs, and Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities. During the visit, Minister Al Mubarak highlighted that the project reflects Bahrain's pride in its cultural heritage and its century-long history of municipal work, dating back to the establishment of the first municipality in the Gulf region in Manama in 1919. The Minister emphasized that, under the guidance of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the restoration aims to preserve the building's historic character and cultural identity. He described the project as an investment in national memory, safeguarding a landmark that showcases Bahrain's pioneering role in municipal governance in the region. Minister Al Mubarak also noted ongoing coordination with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities to maintain the building's cultural and historical details, ensuring that heritage conservation aligns with sustainable development plans. Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa affirmed the importance of the project as a documentation of over 100 years of municipal service in Bahrain. He added that highlighting the building's original features will help preserve Manama's urban and cultural heritage, which the Authority aims to register as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Chairman praised the effective collaboration between the Authority and the Ministry, which supports further heritage-linked infrastructure and urban development projects across the Kingdom.

Bahrain registers National Philharmonic Orchestra as private institution

Bahrain has established its first national philharmonic orchestra, following an official decision published this week by the country's cultural authority. Under a decision by Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), the Bahrain Philharmonic Orchestra has been registered as a private cultural institution. The orchestra, created by Bahraini maestro Mubarak Najem, will be based in Isa Town and carry out its cultural role independently. Its starting fund is BD2,000, held with a local bank, though there is no limit on its financial scope. According to its founding documents, the orchestra plans to use music as a way to bring communities closer, encourage dialogue, and promote understanding. It aims to support local talent, hold regular performances and provide work opportunities for Bahraini musicians and composers. The organisation will be run by a five-member Board of Trustees chosen by the founder. The board will manage operations, finances and general direction, meeting at least four times a year. Urgent matters may be dealt with by the chair, as long as the full board reviews them afterwards.
