Jordan: Amman, Damascus chambers forge closer ties through twinning agreement

AMMAN— The Amman and Damascus chambers of commerce on Saturday signed a twinning agreement aimed at boosting economic cooperation and renewing commercial ties between Jordan and Syria. The agreement was announced during a visit by a Jordanian economic delegation to Damascus, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. President of the Amman Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Haj Tawfiq said that the agreement reflects a "sincere" pan-Arab message of solidarity and that it demonstrates Jordan's "steadfast" support for Syria. He described the partnership as a 'meaningful step' towards achieving shared strategic objectives and promoting economic integration. "This twinning is not just symbolic, it marks a concrete move to strengthen business ties between the private sectors in both countries. It aligns with our shared interest in promoting Arab unity and responding to regional economic and social challenges,' Hajj Tawfiq said. The two chambers also agreed to establish a joint Syrian-Jordanian Business Council in coordination with the Federation of Syrian Chambers. The council will operate under formal regulations and a clear roadmap to guide institutional and sustainable cooperation between the two economies. President of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce Issam Ghreiwati welcomed the agreement, emphasising that the Jordanian delegation's visit marked a 'turning point' in efforts to rebuild trade ties after years of disruption. He said that the twinning deal signals a new chapter in the economic partnership, laying the groundwork for increased trade and investment opportunities. "It opens up new opportunities for both countries and enhances their position in the regional and Arab markets", he said, reaffirming Damascus' commitment to working with Amman towards a prosperous and sustainable future.

Brazilian business delegation visits Jordan to explore investment prospects

Ammon News - A Brazilian business delegation starts a visit to Jordan Sunday for talks with official and private entities to explore investment opportunities in the Kingdom across various economic sectors. The five-day visit is organized by the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Jordanian Embassy in Sao Paulo. The delegation is headed by the Chamber's President, William Adib Dib Jr., and comprises business owners and executives from various economic sectors, as well as representatives from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Investment Promotion Agency of the State of Sao Paulo. The visit includes a Jordanian-Brazilian business forum, bilateral meetings between companies, and meetings at the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Supply, and Investment, as well as the Customs Department, in addition to tours to promote tourist attractions. The visit is a key step in developing economic relations with Brazil and it opens new horizons for increasing trade exchange between the two countries, commented Jordan Chamber of Commerce President, Senator Khalil Haj Tawfiq. It will allow the delegation to explore investment opportunities and the business environment, and build strategic partnerships, he said, adding that the delegation's choice showed a special investor interest in the Kingdom. He pointed out that Brazil is one of the key economies in South America with strong and advanced industries, particularly in the food sector, which will help boost trade ties with Jordanian firms. The volume of trade between Jordan and Brazil was at JD511 million dinars last year, of which JD60 million in Jordanian exports, almost entirely chemicals and related products, followed by clothing and textiles, dates and other food items. Jordan: 'From Souqs to global markets' trade sector marks as economic cornerstone

AMMAN — President of the Jordan and Amman chambers of commerce Khalil Haj Tawfiq on Saturday said that the sector's 'immense achievements' reflect on the 79-year journey of the trade sector into global market. According to a statement marking Independence Day, this journey has seen the national economy thrives to over 150,000 officially registered commercial and service companies spread across the Kingdom. "The Gross Domestic Product [GDP] has climbed from mere hundreds of millions at independence to JD36.078 billion in 2023," Haj Tawfiq told the Jordan News Agency, Petra. "What has been achieved would not have been possible without the genuine partnership between the public and private sectors,' he stressed. This resilience is evidenced by compelling figures; per capita GDP rose to JD3,228 last year from JD1,278 in 2001. Jordanian exports surged "dramatically" from around JD4 million in 1960 to JD8.579 billion in 2023, while imports grew from about JD43 million to JD19.110 billion over the same period, Haj Tawfiq noted. The trade and services sector is the "primary" engine of Jordan's economy, as it constitutes about 70 per cent of GDP and employs over half a million of registered workers, he said. Haj Tawfiq underscored the sector's role in providing goods and services, creating jobs, enhancing the business environment and strengthening economic ties globally. He also referred to the sector's 'success' in integrating into the world economy through a series of "key" free trade agreements, making Jordan unique among Arab nations in its extensive network of such pacts. Jordan stands as an attractive hub for trade and investment, thanks to its security and stability, opportunities, economic reforms and major infrastructure projects such as the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), industrial estates and development zones. Haj Tawfiq stressed the need for unified efforts between the public and private sectors to implement the EMV swiftly. He stressed the Jordan Chamber of Commerce's commitment to supporting the sector, attracting investment and building robust international networks.

Jordan, Italy chambers discuss trade, youth training, investment promotion

AMMAN — President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Haj Tawfiq and President of the Arab-Italian Chamber of Commerce Pietro Rampino on Thursday discussed means to enhance trade and investment ties between Jordan and Italy, and initiatives targeting youth training and employment. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Arab-German Forum in Berlin and focused on expanding cooperation across various sectors, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Haj Tawfiq said that both sides agreed to launch remote training courses for Jordanian youth in select professional fields through Italian companies, which will deliver their expertise via virtual platforms. Participants will receive certificates accredited by the European Union and issued in cooperation with the Arab-Italian Chamber of Commerce. He further noted that the Arab-Italian Chamber, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Education, will offer 25 fully funded scholarships for Jordanian students to study at specialised institutes in Italy for two years. The students will receive recognised qualifications enabling them to enter the Italian labour market, Haj Tawfiq said, welcoming the initiative and stressing its value in building a skilled workforce. The two sides agreed that the JCC would serve as the official point of contact for Italian investors and business representatives seeking opportunities in Jordan, where the chamber would also provide detailed information on legislation, investment incentives, and the overall business environment in the Kingdom. The Arab-Italian Chamber will act as a platform to assist Jordanian companies looking to expand into the Italian market or establish commercial partnerships. Haj Tawfiq stressed that these efforts would enhance trade flows, especially by boosting Jordanian exports to Italy. Established in 2015, the Arab-Italian Chamber of Commerce is supported by key institutions, professional bodies, and Italian banks. It aims to boost Arab-Italian trade and investment relations and promote broader economic cooperation. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (
