Born into poverty, this actor was dubbed Hema Malini's lookalike; worked with A-listers before dying mysteriously at 33

In the late 1950s, a girl named Ruksana was born in Mumbai's Mahim area to a poor family. Her humble beginnings did not deter her dreams, and by the time she stepped into the world of cinema, she had already begun shaping a career that, while not leading her to superstardom, would leave a mark on audiences. From then on, she appeared in several big productions, including Lawaris (1981), Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981), Khuddar (1982), and Razia Sultan (1983). On screen, she became a familiar presence in ensemble casts, portraying characters that added depth to the story even if they weren't at the centre of it. Ruksana's resemblance to the reigning 'Dream Girl' of Bollywood, Hema Malini, became a talking point. Industry insiders and audiences alike noted the similarity in their facial features, and it was this comparison that led her to adopt the screen name Madhu Malini. The name stuck, and under it, she continued her steady run in Hindi cinema. One of her most remembered roles came in Avatar (1983), where she played an evil daughter-in-law. The performance was widely noticed, further cementing her place as a versatile supporting actor. Yet, despite back-to-back critically acclaimed performances, she found herself typecast in secondary roles, unable to break into the league of lead heroines in Hindi films. While Bollywood didn't offer her the starring roles she might have hoped for, she found success in regional cinema. She acted in Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Gujarati films, expanding her repertoire and earning recognition beyond the Hindi film industry. The 1970s and 80s saw her working consistently, and though she never reached the pinnacle of stardom, she maintained a presence on screen. In 1983, she fulfilled her wish of playing a lead role in the Punjabi film Ambri. However, her life came to a tragic and mysterious end in the late 1980s. She was found dead in her apartment under unexplained circumstances. With no major breakthroughs in the investigation, the case was eventually closed. She was only 33 years old.

'Kareena Kapoor guided Karisma Kapoor when she visited her movie set even though she was younger,' reveals photographer RT Chawla

Karisma Kapoor was already a huge star and Kareena was a young little girl while visiting her sister on a movie set. Clearly, Kareena had strong aspirations of being an actor from a young age and perhaps she was a born superstar. In a recent interview, Bollywood's veteran photographer RT Chawla has revealed that while Babita accompanied Karisma with her on her film shoots, it was actually Kareena's advice that Lolo took. For those not in the know, Karisma and Kareena's nick names are Lolo and Bebo respectively and that's how industry insiders know them. Chawla said that Karisma is the female actor he has photographed the most and she used to consider him a friend. Thus, he would often accompany her on her film shoots. 'Initially, her mother (retired actor Babita) used to always come along with Karisma to movie sets. But it wasn't Babita who guided her, but little Kareena, although she was younger. Whenever she returned after giving a shot, Karisma would always ask Kareena if she did well. And Kareena (if she didn't like her performance) would say, 'No, it wasn't good. Do it this way,'' he said, mimicking Kareena's hand gestures suggesting a different approach. 'Kareena guided Karisma back then when she was young,' he shared during a chat with actor Aartii Naagpal on her YouTube show Chitt Ki Baat. This further led to Aarti Nagpal recalling a memor of working in 'Khuddar' with Govinda and Karisma. Aarti played Govinda's sister in the movie. Recalling her experience, she added, "We were shooting for Khuddar in Chennai. We had a one-month schedule there, and the shoot mostly happened outdoors. I clearly remember Babita ji being on set, sitting and reading a book. Meanwhile, Kareena would be there too, watching the monitor. She must have been in Class 10 back then. There was a noticeable age gap between them, right? Karisma and I were very young ourselves, but Kareena was even younger. I always thought Babita ji was the one guiding Karisma. But now that you mention it, I realise it was Kareena! I remember Karisma running to Kareena after her shots to get feedback. She was the one offering all the advice."

Veteran photographer RT Chawla reveals younger Kareena Kapoor ‘guided' elder sister Karisma during her early career: ‘Mom Babita was also there, but…'

Bollywood stars and siblings Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor have never shied away from expressing their deep love for each other. Not only do they share a warm and compassionate bond, but they've also been each other's biggest cheerleaders since childhood. Recently, legendary Bollywood photographer RT Chawla shared an interesting anecdote from the Kapoor sisters' younger days, back when Karisma had just started out and Kareena was yet to make her debut. He revealed that, despite being younger, Kareena often guided her elder sister, particularly in matters related to work. This highlighted Bebo's natural flair and hinted at the star actor she would one day become. Mentioning that he shares a very strong bond with Karisma, Chawla called her the female actor he has photographed the most. Recalling how Karisma always invited him to accompany her on shoots, he said that she introduced him as her 'friend' on sets where people didn't know him well, ensuring he was treated with warmth and respect. Meanwhile, this sparked a memory for Aartii Naagpal, who recalled working on director Iqbal Durrani's Khuddar (1994), which featured Govinda, Karisma Kapoor and Kader Khan in key roles. Aartii, who played Govinda's sister in the film, said, 'We were shooting for Khuddar in Chennai. We had a one-month schedule there, and the shoot mostly happened outdoors. I clearly remember Babita ji being on set, sitting and reading a book. Meanwhile, Kareena would be there too, watching the monitor. She must have been in Class 10 back then. But now that you mention it, I realise it was Kareena! I remember Karisma running to Kareena after her shots to get feedback. She was the one offering all the advice,' Aartii shared, adding that Kareena has grown up to be a very talented and accomplished actor.
