Latest generation Kia SUV is better in every way and the range is now up to 582km

THIS is the new Kia EV6, but at first glance you'd be hard pushed to tell it apart from the previous generation. There are a few changes and improvements, with the most noticeable exterior tweaks at the front, as the EV6 comes with sleek daytime running lights plus a light bar that flows across the whole bonnet. Advertisement 6 FRESH FACED: EV6's fresh new look incorporates sleek daytime running lights that run across the whole of the bonnet and are part of Kia's Star Map lighting signature Credit: Kia Ireland They're all part of Kia's 'Star Map' lighting signature, with more in the rear lights too. There are new alloys and a raft of fancy colours, but the biggest changes are under the skin and inside. The EV6 is still a great-looking SUV, with its futuristic looks standing the test of time. It's not as polarising-looking as it was when introduced in 2021 now that they are common sights on our roads. Advertisement The EV6 is equipped with Kia's new fourth-gen battery. With higher energy density, the capacity has increased from 77.4kWh to 84kWh. As you'd expect, this translates into a higher range, with Kia quoting a figure up to 582km. While using a fast DC charger the maximum I got was 488km, but at home on a 7.4kW wallbox, expect that to increase. Advertisement Most read in Motors Thanks to 800V battery tech, peak fast charging is up from 239kW to 350kW. But even though I was supposed to be topping up the EV6 at a rate of 150kW, the fastest speed I could draw from the public charger was 78.5kW — still fast, but not as fast as advertised. However, if you do find a charger capable of running at those speeds, the EV6 battery can be recharged from 10-80 per cent in just 18 minutes. 6 WELCOME BACK: Not much change back here apart from the combination tail-lamps being enhanced with Star Map lighting technology Credit: Kia Ireland Advertisement Key Facts: Kia EV6 Cost: From €49,510 Engine: 168kW electric motor Power: 225bhp Torque: 350Nm 0-100kph: 7.7 seconds Top Speed: 185kph Battery: 84kW Range: 582km Real world range: 487km Rivals: Hyundai IONIQ 5, BMW iX3, Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4 6 BOOT SIZE: EV6's boot is 528 litres and that rises to 1,300 litres when you lower the rear seats Credit: Adam Warner Power comes from a rear-mounted 168kW electric motor that produces 225bhp and 350Nm of torque, so a leisurely sprint from 0-100kph takes 7.7 seconds and it has a 185kph top speed. In the UK you can opt for a dual-motor, all-wheel drive version with 320bhp but sadly not in Ireland and just released is the 631bhp EV6 GT, but that might not be coming here either. As before, the driving modes are Eco, Normal, Sport, My Drive and Snow. And Sport really does liven things up. Advertisement Plus Kia has tweaked the damping settings to deliver improved stability. It does feel more nimble and smooth on the road, with good grip. 6 FRUNK SIZE: There's a hefty 52 litres of additional storage under the bonnet in the frunk Credit: Adam Warner 6 TECH THAT: The EV6 now features dual 12.3-inch curved displays, ambient lighting and Apple and Android connectivity Credit: Adam Warner Advertisement Inside the new EV6 sees more big changes like the huge, curved panoramic display that's two 12.3-inch displays placed side by side. The ambient lighting really comes to life at night. The EV6 introduces a steering wheel and the wireless phone-charging pad charges at 15W. Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay comes as standard. The model line-up consists of the €49,510 Earth and €54,300 GT-line trim level, with 0% finance on both PCP and HP and is available from €381pm. Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6: Which premium electric SUV will you pick

Both the Model Y and the Kia EV6 are premium electric crossovers targeting early adopters, but they follow vastly different paths in terms of design, user experience, and drivetrain ideology. Check Offers The Indian EV space has gathered some serious momentum, and with Tesla officially introducing the Model Y at ₹ 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom price), one would expect a significant shake-up. While the Model Y is entering a nascent market of premium electric crossovers, it is a market that is already acquainted with "premium" electric vehicles like the Kia EV6, which received a meaningful update in January 2025. Both the Model Y and the Kia EV6 are premium electric crossovers targeting early adopters, but they follow vastly different paths in terms of design, user experience, and drivetrain ideology. Here's a comprehensive comparison to understand how these two global EV icons stack up in the Indian context. Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6: Design The Tesla Model Y is unambiguously a Tesla, built on the same platform as the Model 3 but with SUV dimensions. It adheres to Tesla's spare design philosophy, with its streamlined surfaces, flush door handles, and coupe profile. The lack of over-the-top creases and badging gives it a sleek, aerodynamic look, though some will critique its design as unflourished—particularly in a class that sometimes excels on road presence and visual drama. Also Read : Tesla Model Y: 5 things you need to know before buying the new American EV Compared to that, the Kia EV6 is a more aggressive and expressive interpretation of electric mobility. Founded on Hyundai Motor Group's exclusive E-GMP platform, it has a low-slumped, wide-bodied stance with a cab-forward profile. The EV6 distinguishes itself with an aggressive front face, narrow DRLs, tautly sculpted sides, and a LED lightbar running the width of the rear. The 2025 update didn't bring drastic styling changes but introduced subtle refinements like new alloy wheel designs and fresh colour options that subtly sharpen its visual appeal. Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6: Features Tesla's approach to cabin design in the Model Y is radically minimalistic. The entire interface is controlled via a 15-inch horizontal touchscreen mounted centrally on the dashboard. This display governs everything from navigation and music to vehicle settings and climate control, with no physical buttons or instrument cluster in sight. Key features in the India-spec version include a panoramic glass roof, premium sound system, basic Autopilot (Tesla's standard driver-assistance suite), wireless software updates, and real-time navigation data. However, one notable omission is smartphone integration—there's no support for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which could be a drawback for users accustomed to mirroring apps. The Kia EV6, in contrast, offers a more balanced interior experience, combining traditional controls with digital sophistication. The dashboard is anchored by dual 12.3-inch curved displays—one serving as the digital instrument cluster and the other as the infotainment screen. The infotainment unit supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with Kia's native navigation and voice control systems. Features such as a 14-speaker Meridian sound system, 360-degree surround view camera system, augmented reality head-up display, ventilated and powered front seats with cooling and heating, and wireless phone charging bring the EV6's interior game to the next level. Its ADAS system features forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring, all of which benefited from the 2025 update. Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6: Specs The Tesla Model Y comes in two Indian trim levels: RWD and AWD. The RWD comes with one rear-mounted motor and is estimated to make about 296 hp with a stated WLTP range of 533 km. It sprints from 0–100 km/h in less than 6.9 seconds. The AWD model raises the stakes with two motors delivering more than 480 hp, allowing for a significantly faster 0–100 km/h in a mere 5.0 seconds and a comparative range of 514 km (WLTP). While Tesla has not disclosed battery sizes, global specifications suggest capacities of approximately 60–75 kWh, depending on the variant. Both variants support fast charging, but Tesla's Supercharger network in India is still in its infancy. Also Read : Tesla Model Y vs BYD Sealion 7: Which best selling EV makes more sense for India Kia's EV6 GT Line AWD matches up with a dual-motor setup, delivering 325 hp and 605 Nm of torque, with a 0–100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds. It uses a 77.4 kWh battery pack, offering an ARAI-certified range of 708 km, though real-world figures hover around 500–550 km. A key advantage is Kia's 800V electrical architecture, allowing ultra-fast DC charging—from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes with a 350 kW charger. While such chargers are not widespread in India yet, the EV6 remains future-ready. Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6: Price The Tesla Model Y is priced at ₹ 59.89 lakh for the RWD variant and ₹ 66.89 lakh for the AWD variant (ex-showroom). The RWD is priced at a reasonable access point into the Tesla world, but lacks performance. On the other hand, the AWD variant offers engaging performance and all-weather capability and is the most expensive of the three. Both the RWD and AWD variants will be a signature Tesla experience with technology, however, falls short on features like 360-degree cameras, ventilated seats, and phone connectivity that are increasingly standard and even expected in this space. The Kia EV6 GT Line AWD is priced ₹ 65.97 lakh (ex-showroom). It falls in between the two variants of Tesla and is overall a better value package. Although the Kia EV6 GT Line AWD does not have the same straight-line performance as the Model Y AWD, you get better range, faster charge times, and better usability in the cabin. There is also a better service network across India with Kia and a more developed dealer support system. Overall, from a value proposition, the EV6 offers a better ev premium experience for Indian consumers. Check out Upcoming EV Cars in India. First Published Date: 21 Jul 2025, 10:30 am IST

The week in charts: Retail inflation, Tesla in India, Paytm shares

India's retail inflation eased again in June, marking the longest streak of decline in at least a decade. Meanwhile, Tesla has launched its first showroom in India, and Paytm shares surged past the ₹1,000 mark after a gap of over six months amid strong market momentum. Falling inflation India's retail inflation eased to 2.10% in June from 2.82% in May, nearing the RBI's lower tolerance limit of 2%. This marked the eighth straight month of decline, the longest stretch in at least a decade. Food prices, which make up nearly 40% of the CPI basket, fell 1.06% year-on-year in June, marking the first food deflation since January 2019. The cooling inflation offers some relief to the RBI, which struggled for years to keep it near its 4% target. Tesla's touchdown After years of delay, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with its first showroom in Mumbai's BKC. Instead of the more affordable Model 3, the company has launched with the SUV-like Model Y, better suited for Indian road conditions, Mint reported. A lower-cost variant is expected to arrive next year. Priced at ₹59.9 lakh, the Model Y positions itself in the premium EV segment and faces stiff competition. With a claimed range of 575 km, it trails behind rivals like the Kia EV6 (650 km) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (631 km). Price surge ₹1,000: That's the level Paytm shares reclaimed on 16 July, crossing the mark for the first time in over six months. The stock has climbed 9% this month, extending a steady recovery since its May 2024 low of ₹310. The recent rally was fueled by the buzz around Paytm's likely upgrade to the MSCI Standard Index, which could draw $212 million in inflows, Mint reported, citing Motilal Oswal estimates. Mutual funds raised stakes in the company in Q1, and analysts expect Paytm to report its first profit after tax, driven by operating leverage and steady merchant growth. Fund frenzy Jio BlackRock, the equal joint venture between Jio Financial Services and global investment giant BlackRock, has made a strong debut, raising ₹17,800 crore through its first three debt-oriented schemes. This has placed it among India's top 30 fund houses by AUM, according to an analysis by Backed by Reliance Jio's 475 million-strong user base and BlackRock's investment tech, the venture aims to shake up the mutual fund market. Jio Financial's stock, which had been declining due to operational delays, has rebounded sharply in the past four months. Narrowing deficit India's merchandise trade deficit narrowed to $18.78 billion in June, down nearly 10% from a year ago. This was mainly due to a sharper fall in imports. While exports were nearly flat at $35.1 billion, imports fell 3.7% to $53.9 billion. Exports growth was hindered by a 15.9% decline in exports of petroleum products. Exports of nonpetroleum products grew 2.9%, albeit slower than 5.0% the previous month. Imports also declined mainly due to petroleum products. Jane jinx ₹4,843 crore: That's the amount Jane Street has deposited in an escrow account to comply with the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi's) interim order in the alleged index manipulation case in an effort towards regaining market access in India. As per a clause in the order, the trading ban should be lifted once this deposit is verified, a Mint report said. While the move signals progress, Sebi has yet to confirm compliance. Legal experts say the process is typically swift but not instant. Jane Street remains under investigation, with regulators maintaining heightened scrutiny over its future trading activity. Tariff tussle India and the US are yet to finalise a trade deal, even as the 90-day extension on reciprocal tariffs has ended. The US's insistence on getting greater market access in the agriculture and dairy sectors has led to a stand-off, with the Indian officials negotiating a more balanced outcome that does not hurt the domestic players in the two sectors. India has been protective of the agricultural and allied sectors and imposes the world's third-highest tariff on imports, only behind South Korea and Turkey, a Mint analysis showed. Chart of the week: Fleeing millionaires India witnessed one of the largest outflows of dollar millionaires so far in 2025, with 3,500 dollar millionaires migrating on a net basis. These individuals together have an estimated wealth of $26.2 billion. The UK topped the list, with 16,500 millionaires migrating from the country.
