When Utah passed an "emergency" ban on tall hats at live performances

With Kilby Block Party heralding the start of our summer concert season, I find myself torn between wanting to join in the fun and not wanting to spend hours staring at some guy's shoulder blades because I'm too short to see anything else. Catch up quick: Turns out I'm not the first Utahn to tire of neck-craning. The legislature once passed an "emergency" ban on tall hats in theaters because no one behind them could see the show. This is Old News, our weekly quest for an unobstructed view of Utah's past. The intrigue: The 1897 ban was the first Utah bill ever filed by a woman. Eurithe K. LaBarthe was one of two women elected to the state House in 1896, when Utah's new constitution granted suffrage. When LaBarthe proposed the hat ban, the men in the chamber laughed at its frivolity. Yes, but: "High hat" bans were sweeping the nation, starting in Ohio. Context: Women's hats of the day were, admittedly, way over the top. What happened: The ban swiftly passed both chambers and was signed by the governor as an " emergency measure." How it worked: Guests at theaters, opera houses and other "indoor places of amusement" faced fines ranging from $1 to $10 for wearing hats that blocked the view for other patrons — about $40 to $400 in today's money. Friction point: Women kept wearing their high hats, the Salt Lake Tribune reported, noting: "Just how many ostriches had been stripped to supply these mammoth creations would be hard to tell." The next month, lawmakers called for the arrest of one theater owner who refused to sell them tickets in protest of the hat ban. The other side: In an editorial, the Broad Ax newspaper of Salt Lake City argued that women looked prettier without hats anyway. The Salt Lake Herald pointed out that men were constantly getting up mid-show to go hang out with their friends in the theater. The newspaper called on the legislature to ban that, too. The bottom line: Until Utah implements a tall person ban, my 6' 4" husband will be avenging my shortness at all the live shows I skip. Previously in Old News

Warmer temps Friday afternoon ahead of weekend storms

SALT LAKE CITY () — Happy Friday, Utah! A weak disturbance is moving through on Friday, leading to mostly cloudy skies. Look for a mix of clouds and sunshine Friday afternoon. Moisture still lingering across the state could still produce a few pop-up showers across Utah. Temperatures will warm into the upper 60s across the Wasatch Front and low to mid-80s for SW Utah. Saturday will feature increasing clouds and breezy conditions as our next storm system approaches the state. This system will bring increasing chances for showers and rumbles, Saturday afternoon through Sunday and Monday, along with another round of cooler temperatures! Some areas may pick up between 1.00-2.00″ of rain across northern Utah through Tuesday! Upper-level wind energy could lead to a chance for an isolated strong to severe storm with wind gusts over 60 mph and small hail. This system will also bring dropping snow levels, so our mountains could be in line for some late-season snowfall this weekend. The best chances for this will be above 7,000-7500 FT, where several inches will be possible. The winds will be gusty out of the southwest on Saturday, especially across SE Utah where we have a Red Flag Warning in effect for Saturday afternoon. This means no outside burning across this area. Any fires that get going would likely spread quickly between the gusty winds and low humidity. Nation of Language Reveal 2025 Tour, Share Sub Pop Debut 'Inept Apollo': Stream

The post Nation of Language Reveal 2025 Tour, Share Sub Pop Debut 'Inept Apollo': Stream appeared first on Consequence. Brooklyn indie pop trio Nation of Language have announced their signing to Sub Pop and released their debut single on the label, 'Inept Apollo.' What's more, the band has revealed an extensive headlining tour for 2025, set to cover North America, the UK, and Europe from August to late November. 'Inept Apollo' pairs bubbling synths with lead singer Ian Richard Devaney's airy vocals, creating a contrast with the inner turmoil expressed in its lyrics. 'Embraced and left alone/ How many miles ago?' he ponders. 'Unbreak the spell/ I remember how it was before.' Stream it below. Get Nation of Language Tickets Here Devaney elaborated on the song's themes in a statement: 'Work is a respite from pain. Whether it's a paying job or just the thing you pour yourself into, having a direction to move in, finding a flow state, it can move focus away from the heaviness of the heart. So, after life's losses, in moments of despair, we resolve time and time again to dive headfirst into the work as best we can. But the artistic process also tends to be when imposter syndrome rears its ugly head — when I find my inner monologue spiraling: 'this is the best coping mechanism I have at my disposal and I'm not even qualified to be doing it.' The new song is accompanied by a music video directed by John MacKay, which Devaney described as feeling like 'walking through an old warehouse in Brooklyn, full of practice spaces and studios, each room occupied by artists striving to express and understand themselves and their place in the world.' Watch the clip below. The newly announced headlining tour expands on previously teased dates in cities like Brooklyn and London. The North American leg kicks off on August 21st in Hamden, Connecticut, with subsequent stops planned for Chicago, Vancouver, Austin, Atlanta, and many other cities before concluding in Washington, DC on October 30th. Following the North American dates, Nation of Language will take their tour to the UK and Europe, wrapping up in late November. Tickets for the tour go on sale to the general public this Friday, May 16th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster and Nation of Language's official website. An artist pre-sale is ongoing. Ahead of the tour, Nation of Language are set to make festival appearances at Cruel World and Kilby Block Party, followed by a string of opening dates on Death Cab for Cutie's Plans 20th anniversary tour.
