Phasmophobia is getting a horror movie adaptation from Blumhouse

Blumhouse are working on a film adaptation of 'Phasmophobia'. The 2020 multiplayer horror survival game - which was developed and published by independent studio Kinetic Games - has become a huge hit with over 23 million sales around the world, and now the iconic film studio is giving the paranormal title the big screen treatment. The movie version will be produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster alongside Kinetic Games. Daniel Knight - director of Kinetic Games and 'Phasmophobia' lead developer - said in a statement: "We're thrilled to officially announce that a 'Phasmophobia' film adaption is in development — it's a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting. 'We never could've imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we're so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact 'Phasmophobia' has had in the gaming space and beyond. "Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can't wait to share more as the project develops.' There is currently no release date, plot details or casting information available for the project, which appears to be in its early stages. The 'Phasmorphia' game is a played in the first-person, with gamers either working alone or in a group to figure out what type of ghost is haunting a certain location. In the game, most of the ghosts are based on various creatures or entities from different religions and cultures, from poltergeists and the Japanese Obake to Irish folklore's Banshee. There is no real central narrative - the single player mode didn't come until a year after the original launch - which means the team behind the movie will be able to explore different ways of honouring the source material. The news was initially revealed during Blumhouse's Business of Fear event this week, as CEO and founder Jason Blum was joined by President Abhijay Prakash, Atomic Monster CEO and founder James Wan, and horror analyst and author Stephen Follows. The group discussed how horror has expanded more recently, and pointed to the way certain subgenres can indulge its audience's diverse tastes. Last summer, Blumhouse launched a survey looking to put 100 major horor films from the past five decades into various subgenres. The paranormal subgenre was found to be one of 24 thriving themes, along with the likes of slashers, survival films, and psychological thrillers.

Phasmophobia is getting a horror feature film by Blumhouse

ALBAWABA - The popular horror game, Phasmophobia, which took the gaming world by storm on release after introducing a new mechanic that allowed players to contact ghosts using their microphone, is officially getting a feature film, developed by horror giant, Blumhouse Productions. The news sparked widespread excitement among the game's fans due to the studio's track record of producing horror films, including The Black Phone, M3GAN, the adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy's, and many more. It's worth noting that both Five Nights at Freddy's and The Black Phone are getting a sequel this year. Additionally, Blumhouse is working hand in hand with Atomic Monster and Kinetic Games to bring the film to life. However, an official distributor is yet to be announced, according to Variety. Phasmophobia is getting a feature film by Blumhouse Phasmophobia's official X page (formerly known as Twitter) took to the social media platform and wrote, "Today we are excited to announce that a feature film adaptation of #Phasmophobia is officially in development by horror film powerhouse, @Blumhouse." A social media user wrote in excitement, "Blumhouse + Phasmophobia = a match made in horror heaven!" Another added, "If I don't hear the main character say, 'Are you here, are you close? Are you pizza?' I'm not watching." The game launched on Valve's Steam store in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many people were stuck at home. Its popularity surged thanks to its innovative co-op system, which let friends socialize through voice chat while exploring haunted locations and encountering paranormal entities. According to Variety, the game sold more than 23 million copies globally and won the "Best Debut Game" at The Game Awards in 2020. This film marks Blumhouse's second live-action adaptation of a popular horror game franchise, with its first being Five Nights at Freddy's, which, despite its mixed reviews, grossed $297.2 million worldwide in contrast to its $20 million budget.

Phasmophobia's next major update drops next month and here's what's in store

Hold onto your head gear, hunters! Kinetic Games has shared the release date for the next big Phasmophobia update as well as teasing what's in store. The Phasmophobia Chronicle update rolls out in late June with a huge Journal overhaul, new equipment, a reworked levelling and progression system and more. Following Phasmophobia 's console launch last October, Kinetic Games let us know what it has planned for its co-op ghost hunting horror title this year in the Phasmophobia 2025 roadmap. First up was the Beasdale Farmhouse rework in March, with the first major update of the year coming in the Chronicle update. ‌ While we already have some idea as to what's in store, today, Kinetic Games has finally shared when the Phasmophobia Chronicle update is rolling out as well as revealing a few more details about the upcoming game changes, that are set to shake things up for old and new ghost hunters alike. ‌ The Phasmophobia Chronicle update is set to release on Tuesday, June 24, and given the past patch rollout times, it'll likely go live at some time between 1am PDT / 4am EDT / 10am BST and 5am PDT / 8am EDT / 1pm BST. As for what changes the update is bringing to the game, there's quite a few significant ones, scrapping the star-system for photos, introducing new media types, equipment and more. We also got a small update of sorts on the Grafton Farmhouse rework which is coming later this year with 'redesigned layouts, re-themed rooms, and a haunting new attic.' Here's everything we can expect in the Phasmophobia Chronicle update when it rolls out on Tuesday, June 24. ‌ Phasmophobia Chronicle update New equipment – Sound Recorder We already knew the Sound Recorder was on the way, available on three upgrade tiers like the rest of the ghost hunting equipment. That being said, we don't know what the Tier 3 Sound Recorder looks like, as Kinetic Games decided it was better left under wraps when first sharing the news in the roadmap. You can use the Sound Recorder to record audio including Spirit Box responses, paranormal sounds (like the horrifically spooky ones you get on the Parabolic Mic), as well as audio from ghost events and, presumably, hunts. There's a short clip over on the blog post to demonstrate what it's like in action. The Tier 1 Sound Recorder is available from Level 4 and when you turn it on, it'll be scanning for supernatural sounds to record nearby. If the range indicator starts going off, move around to get warmer, which will be indicated by the light meter, before the sound disappears. ‌ Journal overhaul The Journal redesign was also teased earlier this year, so no massive surprises here. As there will be new types of media to capture (not just photos) the Photos tab has been scrapped. Instead, it's been replaced by Media tab which is home to photos, videos, and sound recordings. You still need to fill it up for a perfect investigation, but you get two pages for photos, two pages for videos, and the fifth page will be used for sound recordings, is my guess. Of course, Kinetic Games could've added an extra page in this section, but we've just got the teasers to work with for now. Redesigned media system In its current form, the media system sees players snap pics of ghosts, cursed objects and interactions for the Journal, which are graded on a three-star system to determine how much cash and XP you get for your trouble at the end of the investigation. ‌ The introduction of new media types is one aspect of the redesign but the star-system is being tossed out. Instead, the first capture of any media type will be marked as 'Unique' which is where the big money is. Relatively speaking, of course, as we're out here risking our lives for pics that get a few dollars a piece. Any subsequent media you capture of the same type will be classified as 'Duplicates' and come with smaller rewards. You'll also get additional tier bonuses for media based on the equipment you used to capture it. All of this goes towards the Reward Multiplyer at the end of an investigation. For immersion, this new system and equipment is a great touch; trying to convince someone a ghost moved a cup from a photo of it on the floor isn't exactly convincing after all. I'm not sure about the tier bonuses, though, which will presumably be higher for higher tier equipment. While I'm still unlocking higher tier items, I know players in the community often opt for Tier 2 over Tier 3 equipment for certain encounters, so we'll see how that shakes out for everyone. More teases... While we've known about the above since Kinetic Games shared its roadmap, the dev team has teased a bit more along with the Phasmophobia Chronicle update release date. We're getting a brand new main menu UI, as well as a reworked levelling and progression system. We don't have any more details on these two features yet, but a future development preview may shed more light on this. The blog post also tease an image that looks like a van revamp is happening, with a screen visible just behind a VHS player that has a camera sitting on top. Of course, I could be way off the mark, but whatever is being teased could be part of the Phasmophobia Chronicle update based on the blog.
