Taron Egerton responds to speculation he is in the running to be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig's exit

Taron Egerton has responded to speculation that he could be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig 's exit. Many A-list names have been thrown into the ring during the months of speculation about who will play 007 next following Amazon's takeover of the franchise. Rocketman star Taron, 35, has been rumoured to be in the running to be Bond as far back as 2019, with Sir Roger Moore 's son Geoffrey even backing him for the role. However, Taron has now dashed fans' hopes as he poured cold water on the idea, insisting he is too 'messy' to play the suave secret agent. 'I don't think I'm a good choice for it, I think I'm too messy for that,' he told Collider. 'I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig's tenure, but I think I wouldn't be good at it. 'I think there's so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it, I think it would be wasted on me, probably.' Taron also acknowledged that taking on the Bond mantel is quite an undertaking and insisted nobody has actually approached him about the role. But he didn't rule out taking on another major commercial project as he revealed he wouldn't turn down a different opportunity, though remained coy about what that might be. Taron is arguably best-known for starring as Elton John in his biopic Rocketman while he is also well-recognised for taking on the leading role in the Kingsman franchise. Kingsman is a tongue-in-cheek movie series which parodies the common tropes found in spy movies, with Taron taking on the role of agent Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin. There have already been many months of speculation about who Amazon will choose as the next Bond after Daniel's final stint as 007 in 2021's No Time To Die. Last month, Coral Bookmakers reported seeing a strong wave of support behind Aaron with the British actor as the 9-4 favourite for the role. Theo was second best in the betting at 4-1, while Jack was backed at 5-1, while the betting site also have Superman star Henry Cavill, 42, with odds of 10-1. Coral's John Hill said: 'We've seen another strong wave of support behind Aaron Taylor-Johnson in our next James Bond betting. 'Although other names have been linked with the role in recent weeks. 'The British actor remains the man punters are backing to replace Daniel Craig.' According to odds from William Hill, Callum Turner, 35, also has support in the market for him to be cast as the next Bond as he is now just 7/2. Though the identity of Bond is yet to be announced, it has been confirmed that Dune director Denis Villeneuve has signed on to direct the untitled movie. The French-Canadian filmmaker, 57, will also serve as executive producer of the project alongside Tanya Lapointe. Amazon previously announced Amy Pascal and David Heyman as the film's producers, after the studio parted ways with longtime 007 caretakers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Amazon has completed a massive $8.5billion acquisition of MGM Studios, which included the James Bond franchise. They obtained full creative control of the 007 franchise with a deal they struck with Barbara and Michael, the kids of original James Bond producer, Albert R. Broccoli. Amazon reached an agreement with Barbara and Michael in March 2025, and while financial terms were not disclosed, it was rumored to be upwards of $1billion. Barbara and Michael had been overseeing the franchise since 1995, when their father ceded control of his Eon Productions company to them.

Why I'm Kind of Worried about Denis Villeneuve Directing the Next Bond Film

With Daniel Craig bowing out of the franchise, James Bond is primed for a reboot, and the search for a new Bond and a new director is on. According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios has revealed that Denis Villeneuve ( Blade Runner 2049, Dune ) is officially going to direct the next entry, and it looks like Villeneuve himself is also pretty hyped for the job. He says: 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since 'Dr. No' with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory… I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.' While I have no doubt that Villeneuve will deliver a spectacle of a movie, I was hoping that the franchise would return back to its goofier roots—that's why I was rooting for Edgar Wright to land the job. For context, Bond movies were considered a bit like silly action films for decades with Bond going on missions against cartoonish villains with ridiculous technology—this point was brought home with the popularity of the Austin Powers franchise. With the rise of the Daniel Craig era though, the Bond films had embraced a more serious aesthetic—not unlike the Bourne franchise that was running alongside it. So far a while the Craig version of Bond took itself very seriously. They were still spectacle action movies, but the goofiness of the gadgets and villains was kind of toned down. Now going back to Villeneuve, I'm sure that he has something very stylistic in mind, but his movies have been very serious—something I think that Bond has had more than enough of over the past decade. Even the Kingsman franchise tried to bring goofiness back to the action spy genre, but that eventually tapered off. Who knows, maybe Villeneuve has something in store that will surprise all of us, but I'm sure that his fans who are going to be lining up for the film are going to be looking for something that is specifically his brand of cinema. I'd imagine they'd be annoyed if Villeneuve was suddenly all fun and colorful. For now, no release date has been set for the next Bond , but I wish Villeneuve the best; and hopefully he has the same idea to make Bond a bit more fun again.

TV fans issued warning before watching 'twisted' new true crime thriller

There's a new true crime drama in town this week, as Apple TV Plus is set to drop the first two episodes of Smoke this Friday (June 27). Starring Taron Egerton, the drama reunites the Kingsman actor with Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane for a nine episode police procedural. The show is based on the hit podcast Firebug, which retraced the case of a serial arsonist who terrorised Southern California and burned down several businesses, killing four people. The official Apple TV Plus synopsis for the show tells audiences: 'When an arson investigator begrudgingly teams up with a police detective, their race to stop two arsonists ignites a twisted game of secrets and suspicions.' Reviews of Smoke have started to trickle in and a theme has emerged, urging viewers not to give up on the show early on because things take a major turn after the first episode or so. No spoilers of course, but a Rolling Stone review said the thriller might initially look like a 'hacky cop show' until a major twist, urging viewers to 'stick with it'. It was a similar story in The Irish Independent's write-up, which promised: 'If you feel the urge to bail out early, resist it, otherwise you might be missing out on something very special.' Smoke was heralded as having 'hints of brilliance' in the Sydney Morning Herald, which added: 'Every episode from the second onwards ends with an unforeseen turn. That should be valued.' More Trending The reviews were resounding in their praise of Egerton's mercurial performance as firefighter-turned-arson investigator Dave Gudsen, starring alongside the likes of John Leguizamo and Greg Kinnear. Gudsen is looking into two serial arsonists alongside hard-nosed police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett). Like Mindhunter before it, the show becomes both an investigation into who exactly is setting these fires as well as an exploration of why someone would do such a thing.
