Chelsea on the brink of title after Villa thrash Arsenal

Aston Villa pulled off a shock 5-2 win over Arsenal, ending Gunners' Women's Super League title chances at Villa Park. Jordan Nobbs finished off a quick counter before Kirsty Hanson smashed in a belter to give Villa a 2–0 lead at half-time. Chastity Grant made it three just after the break, and Rachel Daly bundled in another 13 minutes later to crush any hopes of an Arsenal comeback. Stina Blackstenius and Alessia Russo hit back with two quick goals to cut the gap, but Grant struck again almost straight away to wrap things up. The Gunners now sit six points behind league leaders Chelsea, who can seal the title at Manchester United later on Wednesday night.

Soccer-Arsenal's collapse at Aston Villa opens door for Chelsea to win WSL title

Soccer Football - Women's Super League - Aston Villa v Arsenal - Villa Park, Birmingham, Britain - April 30, 2025 Aston Villa's Kirsty Hanson scores their second goal past Arsenal's Manuela Zinsberger Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs BIRMINGHAM, England ((Reuters)) -Arsenal suffered a 5-2 hammering at Aston Villa on Wednesday to give Chelsea the opportunity to win their sixth Women's Super League title in a row if they can get a point away to Manchester United later in the evening. The Gunners, who overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit to defeat Olympique Lyonnais 5-3 on aggregate and book their spot in the Champions League final against Barcelona, were brought back down to earth with a bang by a rampant Villa side that went four goals up by the hour mark. Stina Blackstenius and Alessia Russo reduced the deficit for the visitors, but Chasity Grant's second goal of the night gave Villa a 5-2 win that opens the door for Sonia Bompastor's Blues. Chelsea top the standings on 51 points, six ahead of second-placed Arsenal, and a point away to Manchester United later on Wednesday will give them an unassailable seven-point lead with two games left to play. Hanson 'frustrated' at squandering Scotland chances

"Frustrated" Kirsty Hanson is "so disappointed" after Scotland kicked off their Nations League campaign with defeat in Austria. "We wanted to start off the campaign on a win, which we didn't get," the winger said. "We should have finished our chances. I'm really obviously disappointed in myself. I had two chances and I didn't finish them. "It's about small margins at this level, so I'm obviously really frustrated with myself, but we had other chances as well and it's just about taking them. "They had probably one chance and they scored it, and it's just about small margins." The Aston Villa winger added "it might take some time," with the new-look squad, "but we can't obviously use that as an excuse".
