Soccer-Arsenal's collapse at Aston Villa opens door for Chelsea to win WSL title
BIRMINGHAM, England ((Reuters)) -Arsenal suffered a 5-2 hammering at Aston Villa on Wednesday to give Chelsea the opportunity to win their sixth Women's Super League title in a row if they can get a point away to Manchester United later in the evening.
The Gunners, who overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit to defeat Olympique Lyonnais 5-3 on aggregate and book their spot in the Champions League final against Barcelona, were brought back down to earth with a bang by a rampant Villa side that went four goals up by the hour mark.
Stina Blackstenius and Alessia Russo reduced the deficit for the visitors, but Chasity Grant's second goal of the night gave Villa a 5-2 win that opens the door for Sonia Bompastor's Blues.
Chelsea top the standings on 51 points, six ahead of second-placed Arsenal, and a point away to Manchester United later on Wednesday will give them an unassailable seven-point lead with two games left to play.

Sesko 'ready to play' as Amorim plots United's return to European football
MANCHESTER: Newly-signed Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko is ready to play but it is too early to say if he will start when the club kick off their Premier League campaign against Arsenal tomorrow, United manager Ruben Amorim said. Slovenia's Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig last weekend for a transfer fee of 76.5 million euros ($89 million) with 8.5 million in bonuses. United have spent around 200 million pounds this summer after finishing 15th last season. "We didn't have a lot of time but he is ready, physically he is ready, that is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart... he is ready to play, we will see if he is going to start," Amorim told reporters yesterday. Amorim said United, who last season had their worst finish in the English top-flight since 1973-74, will go into the 2025-26 campaign aiming for a return to European soccer. "We cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better. We're training harder and are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game," he said. "We want to return to Europe. We have to be realistic with our fans. We will have to fight a lot because there are more teams with time together than us. We have to focus game by game. We want to win against Arsenal." Gyokeres 'in a different league' Tomorrow's match will pit Amorim against one of the most successful signings in his coaching career, with former Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres joining Arsenal in the summer. Sweden's Gyokeres, who joined the Lisbon-based club in 2023 under Amorim, was the top scorer in the Primeira Liga for two seasons in a row, helping Sporting win back-to-back titles. "Viktor is in a different league. Sporting have good scouting because they live from the players they can buy and sell to survive. I think he's a very good player. It's not a surprise to see him with a big club in England," Amorim said. The manager said defenders Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui were out for the weekend but forward Joshua Zirkzee and goalkeeper Andre Onana had recovered and would be available against Arsenal. "I learned a lot last season. I don't need to focus on the future. That doesn't matter and I don't care. I need to live day by day. Everything that is noise to our team, I take out of the picture, so I just prepare my team against Arsenal," Amorim added.

LONDON: Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to keep digging for gold as they prepare to start their latest bid for a first Premier League title since 2004 against revamped Manchester United tomorrow. Arteta's side have finished as Premier League runners-up for the last three seasons, sparking criticism of their failure to get over the line in the title race. Arsenal blew significant leads when Manchester City pipped them to the trophy in 2023 and 2024 before Liverpool left the injury-plagued north Londoners trailing in their wake last season. Arsenal's title frustrations are mounting, with fans questioning whether Arteta is the right man to end their drought after winning only the 2020 FA Cup since he took charge in December 2019. But the Gunners showed their potential last season with a run to the Champions League semi-finals that ended with a narrow defeat against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. And, buoyed by a host of new signings worth over £180 million ($244 million) in total, Arteta is convinced they can finally get their hands on the Premier League silverware this season. That was a crucial edge as Arsenal finished 10 points behind the champions. In an attempt to insulate Arsenal against another fitness-related collapse, Arteta has brought in Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, Chelsea winger Noni Madueke and Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard. After bemoaning Arsenal's failure to sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as Liverpool pulled away during the January window, the Spaniard is a far more upbeat figure on the eve of the new season. United, who haven't won the title since 2013, had to spend big to erase the stench of their putrid campaign. Amorim's team finished a dismal 15th in the top-flight and squandered a chance to qualify for the Champions League with a toothless 1-0 defeat against fellow underachievers Tottenham in the Europa League final. The pressure is on Amorim, who replaced the sacked Erik Ten Hag in November, to deliver major improvements in his second season. Amorim knows Sesko will be key to that target and he believes the 22-year-old Slovenian is ready to rise to the challenge. "I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure. Every game is like do or die'," Amorim said. "He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that."

Arteta hits back at criticism of Arsenal captain Odegaard
LONDON: Mikel Arteta has slammed calls for Martin Odegaard to be stripped of the Arsenal captaincy by insisting there is "no question" the Norway midfielder is the right man to lead their Premier League title challenge. Former Arsenal skipper Tony Adams recently urged Arteta to give England midfielder Declan Rice the armband instead of Odegaard. But the Gunners boss mounted a strong defence of Odegaard's leadership qualities after revealing Arsenal's players had voted for him to be retained as captain. "My opinion is clear, and it's not just my opinion. It's all the staff and especially the players," Arteta told reporters on Friday. "I asked them to vote for the captain and I got the results yesterday. By a mile, by a big, big (margin), by 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, to improve, and win the matches that we want to win, so I think there is no question about that." Arsenal, who last won the English title in 2004, have finished as Premier League runners-up for the last three seasons and are without a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. Their inability to last the pace in the title race has led to mounting questions about Arsenal's mental strength, with Odegaard among those in the firing line. Arsenal title winner Adams, quoted in the Irish Independent, said: "Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club, that you think can actually take you to the next level. "You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. "Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain." But former Arsenal captain Arteta said he could talk about leadership "for hours" and had no doubts about Odegaard's ability to inspire his team-mates. "What matters the most is how these guys feel about who needs to lead them, how they feel comfortable, who is going to push them, who is going to give them support when it's happening," he said. Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Manchester United on Sunday, then host newly-promoted Leeds before a difficult stretch that will see them play champions Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle. Arteta admits that run will provide early evidence of their potential in the title race. "Yes, especially with the consistency that we showed in the last three years, and now the margins, we know how small they are," he said. "We know that the competition has increased the level with recruitment, with another year together."
