Rs286 crore tiger safari project in Chandrapur gets Maha govt nod
Chandrapur: In what could transform Chandrapur as a key wildlife tourism hub, the Maharashtra government has approved a Rs286 crore tiger safari project spread over 171ha. The project has been entrusted to Maharashtra Forest Development Corporation (FDCM) Gorewada Zoo Limited. The proposed tiger safari will feature three distinct thematic zones — Australian Trail, South American Trail, and Indian Trail — each spread over 5ha. These trails will allow tourists to explore on foot, offering an immersive experience of exotic and native wildlife in naturalistic habitats. Notably, 44ha has been earmarked for vehicle-based safaris, providing visitors with an up-close view of animals in a secure environment. A 20-acre children's park and other tourist-friendly amenities will be developed on the safari premises. The project is expected to serve as a major tourism draw, while also contributing significantly to the local economy. Foreign species will be a highlight of the safari. The Australian Trail will feature kangaroos, cassowaries, wallabies, laughing kookaburras, and colourful birds. The South American Trail includes jaguars, capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, capybaras, and vibrant blue and red macaws. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Вот что поза во сне говорит о вашем характере! Tiger toll 22 this year, Maha accounts for 30% big cat deaths
Nagpur: Maharashtra accounts for 30% of 75 tiger deaths reported countrywide in 2025. National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) data shows that the state reported 22 big cats dying due to various reasons with Madhya Pradesh leading the list for this calendar year with 24 tiger deaths. At the same time, at least 22 humans have been killed in Chandrapur district alone this year due to the increasing man-animal conflict. TOI had reported that in the last three years alone, around 225 human beings were killed by wild animals, with a majority being tigers, in Maharashtra. NTCA data up to May 16, shows that 22 tiger deaths were predominantly in Vidarbha. Only one tiger death happened outside of Vidarbha, as per NTCA data details. Tiger deaths have occurred due to various reasons which include poaching, territorial fights and even electrocution near farmlands as villagers set up illegal electric fences. Chandrapur district, which is home to Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), has already become a conflict zone in the friction between wildlife and humans. Local MLAs have vociferously attributed the presence of 'excess' tigers in the region as the reason behind these conflicts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch Bitcoin và Ethereum - Không cần ví! We have too many tigers here and some are living their entire lives in urban periphery because there is no space for them. There is no need to acquire more land for forest, simply shift these tigers to other places where the numbers are less." Former cabinet minister and Bramhapuri MLA Vijay Wadettiwar, in whose constituency three women were killed by a tiger recently, said, "Forest department cannot keep ignoring such a serious issue citing bureaucratic process. We need these tigers shifted, right now."

Heatwave alert issued as Chanda second hottest on earth at 45.8C
1 2 Nagpur/Chandrapur: A heatwave is expected to hit Nagpur, Amravati, Wardha, Akola, and Chandrapur from Wednesday to Saturday as the maximum temperature is likely to rise further in Vidarbha. An orange alert has been sounded for Amravati and Chandrapur on Wednesday, while a yellow alert has been issued for other districts, asking people to bracee for intense heat. Thursday is likely to be a tough day as an orange alert has been issued for Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, and Chandrapur. The temperature is likely to be around 45 degrees Celsius during the heatwave. On Tuesday, Chandrapur recorded the highest temperature of 45.8 degrees Celsius in the state, becoming the second hottest place on Earth after Odisha's Jharsuguda. At 45.2 degrees Celsius, Brahmapuri was the third hottest place on Earth, followed by Akola (44.8) at seventh and Amravati (44.4) at the ninth spot on the heat chart of weather website Eldorado. At 44.2 degrees Celsius, Nagpur was among the top 15 hottest places in India. A day after registering the highest temperature in the world, Chandrapur witnessed a further spike in mercury, recording a scorching 45.8°C on Tuesday — 3.8°C above normal. The city continues to reel under intense heatwave conditions. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) upgraded the earlier yellow alert to an orange alert, in force till April 26. Bramhapuri town in the district also witnessed a spike, with the temperature soaring to 45.2°C. Officials have warned that the heatwave is likely to persist and may further intensify in the coming days. According to RMC data, the temperature in Chandrapur has shown a consistent upward trend since Sunday, pushing health authorities and the administration to issue fresh advisories. Prolonged exposure to such high temperatures has heightened the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. "Chandrapur recorded 45.8°C on Tuesday, which is significantly above normal. This is an indicator of how severe the summer could become," said researcher and climate observer Suresh Chopane. Officials in the administration claimed that they are closely monitoring the situation. The orange alert calls for greater caution. People must avoid going out during the afternoon and ensure proper hydration and protection, they emphasized. The administration has also directed the health department to be on alert and ensure quick response in case of heat stroke emergencies. The public has also been advised to wear light, breathable clothing and avoid the consumption of alcohol or caffeinated drinks during the day. MLA Kishore Jorgewar has urged the district administration to take immediate steps to safeguard students' health. In a memorandum submitted to Chandrapur collector Vinay Gowda, Jorgewar demanded either a minimum five-day closure of all schools or an urgent revision of school timings. Chandrapur was listed as the hottest city in the world on Monday, prompting growing concerns over the well-being of school and college students.
