Japanese Band TOKIO Officially Disbands Following Controversy Involving Member

Sexual harassment cases involving idols have been on the rise recently. Furthermore, it often leads to not only the perpetrator being affected but also those around them as well. Yesterday (25th June, Thursday), the J-pop industry was in shock as the abrupt news of the disbandment of the legendary rock band TOKIO (トキオ). According to an interview, the group had decided to disband following internal conflict involving one of their members, Kokubun Taichi (国分太一). Taichi had reportedly been implicated in a case related to sexual assault, which led to tension within the band and ultimately influenced their decision to part ways. Last week (20th June, Friday) Nippon TV, a network that the band had been working with for years, announced that they were dropping Taichi due to issues related to sexual harassment. 'This is entirely due to my lack of awareness, my naivety, and my complacency,' he said. 'I've caused great inconvenience to so many people. I deeply regret my actions and will be stepping away from all work without a set return date.' Since then, the pianist had gone on an indefinite hiatus, stepping away from all public and entertainment activities to reflect on his actions. While this move was intended as a gesture of accountability, it did little to mend the damage done to the band he is associated with. As the controversy continued to cast a long shadow over the idols, TOKIO eventually made the painful decision to bring all group activities to an end. 'Given the current situation,' the group wrote in an official statement, 'we concluded that regaining the trust and support of our fans would be extremely difficult. As such, we've decided to put a full stop to our group activities.' In their farewell message, TOKIO expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who had supported them throughout their three-decade-long career. While the disbandment marked the end of an era, many fans continue to hold out hope that the remaining members will overcome these hardships and find new purpose in their solo endeavours—carrying the spirit of TOKIO forward in their own unique ways. TOKIO's Kokubun Taichi to halt activity indefinitely due to 'compliance issues'

Kokubun Taichi, a member of the Japanese band TOKIO, is suspending his activities indefinitely due to breaches of compliance rules. This was announced by his management agency on Friday. Earlier in the day, Nippon Television Network, or NTV, said it was removing Kokubun from a popular weekly program, "The Tetsuwan Dash." It cited the 50-year-old's multiple past acts deemed problematic in terms of compliance. Kokubun said in a statement that, after spending long years in the entertainment world, he lacked a proper understanding of his position. He said he was naive and conceited, and acted poorly. He said he will halt all his professional activities indefinitely and reflect upon himself. NTV has not said when the compliance-related problems took place or what exactly happened for privacy reasons. But it says they are not the kind of issues that warrant the filing of criminal complaints. NTV says it first learned of the problems in late May. It says that, based on a probe by third-party lawyers, the company's board approved Kokubun's removal from the show at an extraordinary meeting on Friday. It says "The Tetsuwan Dash" will remain on the air. NTV President Fukuda Hiroyuki told reporters that the program has been airing for a long time and is loved by its viewers. He said this makes it all the more necessary to strictly enforce governance. "The Tetsuwan Dash" featured segments in which Kokubun and other members of TOKIO engaged in farming and other activities in Fukushima Prefecture and other rural locations. Fukuda said the broadcaster will offer an explanation to the local people who have supported the show, and will seek their continued cooperation. Kokubun debuted as a member of the all-male band TOKIO in 1994. Due to his friendly character, he has emceed variety shows and other programs, while also pursuing acting roles in TV dramas and movies. Prior to Friday's announcement, Kokubun had six regular programs on TV and radio. He also appears in several TV commercials.

Japanese TV personality Kokubun Taichi to be removed from popular weekly program

Tokyo-based commercial broadcaster Nippon TV says personality Kokubun Taichi will be removed from a popular weekly program due to multiple compliance-related problems. Kokubun is the keyboard player for the pop group TOKIO. He is a regular member of NTV's weekly variety show "THE TETSUWAN DASH," or " The Iron Dash." NTV President Fukuda Hiroyuki held a news conference from 1 p.m. on Friday. Fukuda said NTV had confirmed that Kokubun engaged in multiple problematic acts and decided it would be inappropriate for him to continue appearing on the program. NTV said it cannot reveal any details of the incidents that occurred from the viewpoint of protecting privacy. The TV station says it does not intend to file a criminal complaint.
