Leeds close to signing Sebastiaan Bornauw from Wolfsburg

Leeds United are close to completing the signing of defender Sebastiaan Bornauw from German side Wolfsburg. The two clubs have agreed a €6million (£5.13m) fee for the centre-back and he is set to undergo a medical on Monday. His Wolfsburg contract is set to expire next summer. A deal for Bornauw would see him become Leeds' third signing of the summer after fellow defender Jaka Bijol joined from Udinese in a £15m transfer and forward Lukas Nmecha arrived as a free agent. Nmecha was a team-mate of Bornauw's at Wolfsburg for the previous four seasons. Advertisement Bornauw only played 16 games last term as Wolfsburg finished 11th in the Bundesliga after injuries and illness caused him to miss 18 matches. He has appeared 96 times for Wolfsburg in total, scoring four goals. The Belgian came through the academy at Anderlecht in his homeland, featuring 29 times for the senior team before joining German side Koln in August 2019. Bornauw played 57 games for Koln before signing for Wolfsburg in 2021. He has been capped four times by the Belgian senior side after making his debut in October 2020. Leeds have also been targeting a left-back signing, with Lille's Gabriel Gudmundsson of interest. The Athletic reported earlier this month that Leeds have made a bid for Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz. An initial offer of £26million ($34.9m) plus £6m ($8.1m) in add-ons was rejected earlier in the window. Analysis from German football correspondent Sebastian Stafford-Bloor Bornauw had a terrible time with injury in 2024-25 and much like VfL's season as a whole, just couldn't seem to gain any momentum or confidence; he played fewer than 800 Bundesliga minutes. With the squad in transition and now, after the sacking of Ralph Hasenhuttl, under new management, it's not a surprise that — with a year left on his contract — he's likely to leave. Look beyond Bornauw's recent injury difficulties, though. Fit and healthy, he is an obelisk-like centre-back. Not fancy, not likely to carry the ball past a pressing attacker or arrow a perfect ball onto a winger's instep from 50 yards, but a cornerstone piece who seems to enjoy the physical aspects of the game and should have few issues competing in Premier League penalty boxes. Liverpool table latest offer for Florian Wirtz - but are STILL short of Bayer Leverkusen's £126m valuation as talks continue over move for the midfielder

Liverpool have offered £100million plus a further £13m in add ons for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz. Talks are ongoing between parties with the Germany international set on a move to the Premier League champions. The 22-year-old has made it clear that Liverpool are his choice so talks are continuing to find a middle ground over the next few days as Leverkusen hold out for more. The German star has been convinced by Arne Slot 's clear plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. Sources in Germany talk with certainty that Wirtz will soon complete a move to Liverpool with some suggesting next week will be a key period for the deal. And on Wednesday, Wirtz appeared to nod when asked by MailSport if he was 'excited for Liverpool ' after Germany's Nations League defeat by Portugal. If Liverpool accept Bayer's £126m demand, Wirtz would become the most expensive signing in British football, overtaking the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo. Their current offer, however, is short of that. Sources in Germany indicate that next week will be a key period for the negotiations between Bayer Leverkusen and Arne Slot's side A potential stumbling block for the deal had appeared in the form of a statement from Koln president Werner Wolf. Wirtz joined Koln as a child in 2010 before making the switch to Leverkusen 10 years later as a 17-year-old. According to FIFA's rules, any club that has played a role in a player's development between the age of 12 and 23 will receive five per cent of any transfer fee as 'training compensation'. Wirtz was at Koln for nine-and-a-half years from the age of seven and Wolf said his club are going to fight for what they feel they deserve. Five per cent of the fee would see Koln pocket more than £5million from what could be a record transfer. On Wednesday night, Wirtz scored the first goal of the game as Germany fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Portugal in the Nations League. This Sunday, he will line up against France in the third-place play-off.

Liverpool's summer pursuit of Florian Wirtz takes another twist with Bayer Leverkusen 'embroiled in a million-dollar dispute' - as Reds look to sign playmaker despite £110m bid rejected

The Florian Wirtz transfer saga has taken another twist with Liverpool still working to complete a deal for the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder. The Reds remain in negotiations with Leverkusen over the player with the German club wanting £120million. Liverpool are currently at £109m but Wirtz has made it clear he wants the move after being convinced by Arne Slot of a plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. Should the Reds accept to Bayer's demands, Wirtz would become the most expensive signing in British football, overtaking the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo. However, another stumbling block has appeared in the form of a statement from Koln president Werner Wolf. Wirtz joined Koln as a child in 2010 before making the controversial switch to Leverkusen 10 years later as a 17-year-old. According to FIFA's rules, any club that has played a role in a player's development between the age of 12 and 23 will receive five per cent of any transfer fee as 'training compensation'. Five per cent of the fee would see Koln pocket more than £5million from what could be a record transfer. As per BILD, Wolf said: 'Of course, we are looking into it. We know what we are entitled to and will fight for it.

The report claims that the striker was out with friends in a borough of Cologne. A fight broke out in a boathouse bar near the bank of the River Rhine with another group, before things settled down. But Lemperle and his pals were allegedly attacked while leaving the venue later at 9pm local time. Koln boss Friedhelm Funkel hasn't had any contact with Lemperle, who was forced to miss training on Monday afternoon. Funkel said: "I know he was physically assaulted on Sunday. He sustained facial injuries. "The likelihood of him playing on Sunday is slim. It can't be completely dismissed, but it is slim. I can't say anything more about it." Advertisement The police are investigating the incident and appealing for witnesses. Lemperle has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 24 second division appearances this season. And he was nailed on starter for the final, after having been named in the starting XI in 22 out of 24 league games this term. FC Koln finished second in Bundesliga 2, behind Hamburg who were automatically promoted to end a seven-year absence from the German top flight.
