Supreme Court verdict a slap on Chandrababu's face: YSRCP
Anantapur: The Supreme Court's verdict in the arrest case of senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao is a clear slap on Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's face, said YSRCP Anantapur district president Anantha Venkatarami Reddy. He stated that the Supreme Court bench questioned how a case could be filed against Kommineni just for comments made by a panelist during a Sakshi TV debate. 'This verdict is a strong step toward safeguarding democracy,' he said. He alleged that despite senior journalist Kommineni and the Sakshi media having no connection to the comments made by political analyst Krishnamraju during a recent debate, TDP leaders launched a statewide campaign of unrest, falsely implicating them. At the same time, he accused them of spreading malicious propaganda against former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his wife Bharath. Reddy further condemned the orchestrated attacks on Sakshi media offices across the state, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved. He criticized the coalition government for governing like a dictatorship for the past year, using illegal arrests and false cases to suppress opposition. The Supreme Court's observations clearly reveal that basic legal norms were not followed in Kommineni's arrest, he added. Calling the state's ongoing governance a 'Red Book regime,' Reddy asserted that the Court's ruling exposes the arrest as unlawful and undemocratic. He said the Supreme Court's remarks reflect the deteriorating state of democracy in Andhra Pradesh, and demanded that the coalition government start upholding the Ambedkar Constitution in spirit and practice.

SC orders release of senior Telangana journalist held for panellist's remarks
The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the immediate release of senior journalist and Sakshi TV anchor Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, who was arrested by Andhra Pradesh police on June 9 over controversial comments made by a panellist during a televised debate, noting that Rao had not made the objectionable remarks himself and that 'freedom of journalistic expression deserves protection'. A division bench of the Supreme Court comprising justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and justice Manmohan issued an order directing the police to release him on bail as per the conditions to be suggested by the local court in Mangalagiri in Guntur district. Rao, a 70-year-old veteran journalist, was arrested from his Hyderabad residence and transported to Guntur in Andhra Pradesh after a police complaint was filed over a live broadcast of the KSR Live Show on June 6. During the show, panelist and fellow journalist VVR Krishnam Raju allegedly made deeply derogatory and obscene remarks against the women in the Amaravati region. While Krishnam Raju was named accused No. 1 (A-1) in the case, Rao was named A-2. The complaint, filed by Kambampati Sireesha, a Dalit leader of the Amaravati Capital Farmers' Joint Action Committee, accused the show of humiliating the self-respect of Amaravati's women, especially Dalit women. She also alleged that the Sakshi TV management appeared to have encouraged the statement. Following the complaint, the police booked Rao, Raju and Sakshi TV management under multiple laws, including the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Section 67 of the IT Act (publishing obscene material electronically), and several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), such as Sections 79 (outraging a woman's modesty) and 196 (promoting enmity between groups). Rao was produced before the additional judicial magistrate of first class-cum-civil judge court in Mangalagiri, which remanded him to judicial custody for two weeks. On Thursday, he moved the Supreme Court seeking bail. Arguing on behalf of Rao, senior advocate Siddharth Dave said his client was only an anchor hosting the debate on Sakshi television channel and the alleged abusive remarks were made by a panellist. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for the state government, said Kommineni was goading and abetting the man who was making that statement. 'He was laughing, when the panelist was using abusive language against women of Amaravati,' he said. The bench asked the state how the petitioner could be arrested for the statements made by someone else. 'When someone makes an outrageous statement, we laugh it off. They can't be termed co-conspirators,' the bench said. The bench also mentioned the need to protect journalistic freedom. The bench passed the order Kommineni was nowhere concerned with the statement made by one of the participants in the debate. It said the accused be released on bail subject to the conditions to be imposed by the trial court. Meanwhile, the Mangalagiri court on Thursday remanded Krishnam Raju, who was arrested by the police the previous night at Visakhapatnam, to judicial custody till June 26, for his alleged derogatory comments against Amaravati women. People familiar with the matter said in the remand report filed in the court, the police said Krishnam Raju admitted to have made the derogatory comments as he had utter contempt for chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and ruling Telugu Desam Party. 'Despite the outrage over his derogatory statements that deeply insulted the women of the Amaravati region, Krishnam Raju has not issued an apology. Instead, he reportedly went a step further by creating and releasing videos on YouTube defending and justifying his remarks, stating there was nothing wrong in what he said,' the police said in the report. They further told the court that Krishnam Raju, being fully aware that Amaravati is home to people from various communities, castes, and religions, deliberately made such inflammatory statements. His intention, they alleged, was to demean and humiliate all women of the region — especially Dalit and tribal women — thereby hurting their dignity and self-respect.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women issued a statement saying it has taken 'suo motu cognizance of media reports on alleged derogatory remarks made by journalist Krishnam Raju against Amaravati women during a TV debate'. VVR Krishnam Raju, a journalist and political analyst, who made the offensive comment on Kommineni's show, on the Jagan Mohan Reddy family-owned Sakshi TV, is reportedly absconding, and the Andhra Pradesh police are looking to arrest him. Hyderabad: Senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao has been sent to 14 days judicial custody by a Mangalagiri court for a derogatory term used on his TV debate show for women from the Amaravati capital region. 'Referring to Amaravati as a 'capital of prostitutes' is an outrageous insult to women farmers. NCW strongly condemns such unacceptable and inciting statements in public discourse,' the commission said on X Tuesday. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Andhra Pradesh DGP Harish Gupta directing him for 'a swift and time-bound investigation, and strict action against Raju under relevant laws'. She has asked for an action-taken report within three days. On the TV debate on Friday evening, Raju used the expression 'vaeshyala raajadhani' while objecting to CM Chandrababu Naidu and TDP's use of 'devathala raajadhani' (capital of goddesses), in reference to Amaravati, the AP capital. When host Kommineni made a brief objection over such expressions in a TV debate, Raju defended his remarks, citing reports that said Andhra Pradesh has among the highest concentration of female sex workers in the country. While several complaints were lodged against Raju and Kommineni at various places in AP, the state police arrested Kommineni from his residence at Journalists' Colony in Hyderabad on Monday morning, acting on a FIR based on a complaint by Kambhampati Sireesha, a TDP leader and an office bearer of the state Madiga Corporation. Accused no 1 and 2, Raju and Kommineni, are booked under various sections of the BNS and the SC ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. A police team from Thulluru led by a DySP rank officer took the 68-year-old senior journalist into custody, shifted him to AP and produced him before a magistrate a day later. Since Monday, Sakshi offices at places like Vijayawada were attacked and vandalised by TDP supporters, mainly women. The TDP cadres' strong reactions followed that of the party leaders including supremo Chandrababu Naidu, who also vowed action on Raju and Kommineni. On Saturday, minister Nara Lokesh posted on X a video clip of the debate on Sakshi TV, where Raju made the offensive remarks. Lokesh tagged Jagan and #YCPinsultsWomen. '@ysjagan garu, how can you insult women so appallingly in your media house? The false propaganda with hatred against the self-esteem of mothers and against Amaravati is the height of your depravity! Amaravati is truly the capital of the divinities! Amaravati is the land of mothers who sacrificed their lands…' said Lokesh. 'Jagan should take responsibility' On Sunday, Naidu issued a strong statement condemning the 'disgraceful remarks' made by Krishnam Raju 'on Sakshi TV, a channel owned by former chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, targeting women in the Amaravati region and calling the capital city, a 'capital of prostitutes'. 'Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We belong to a society that reveres the feminine divine. This is our tradition—the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection and high esteem. In such a state of ours, making disgraceful and vulgar remarks about our mothers and sisters under the guise of political vendetta or media analysis is an unforgivable offence,' said the CM on X on Sunday, sharing the video clip from the show. Assuring that 'those who crossed all boundaries will face the strictest possible consequences,' Naidu said, 'there can be no tolerance for the appalling comments that demean the women of the capital region by likening them to prostitutes—an outright insult to their dignity. I strongly condemn this perverse trend being perpetuated under the cover of politics and media.' The CM went on to criticise his predecessor Jagan 'for not taking responsibility'. 'It is even more distressing that a former chief minister, on whose own media channel these offensive statements were broadcast, has yet to denounce the act or apologise to women—a silence that is deeply troubling.' Taking to X on Monday, after the Kommineni arrest, Jagan remarked, '…democratic voices, intellectuals, and journalists are being silenced through fear, intimidation, and blatant misuse of power under Naidu's anarchic regime'. Jagan called the arrest 'an act of political vendetta'. He questioned the rationale of arresting a moderator for remarks he never made, simply for hosting a debate. 'In any discussion, diverse opinions are natural. Punishing an anchor for guests' statements is not only unjust, it's dangerous,' said the YSRCP chief. Jagan also referred to some past controversial remarks by Chandrababu Naidu himself and his brother-in-law Nandamuri Balakrishna. 'You once asked if a mother-in-law will ever object when a daughter-in-law says she will deliver a boy child. Your brother-in-law even said that when you see a girl, you should either kiss or make her pregnant.'
