Farmers end protest seeking lift irrigation project after assurance from Minister

Leaders of farmers associations withdrew their nine-day protest seeking Boodihal-Peerapur Lift Irrigation Project in Vijayapura after an assurance from Minister M.B. Patil. The Minister met the protesting farmers on Sunday and listened to their grievance. He then spoke to managing director of Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam K.P. Mohanraj. Mr. Patil assured the farmers that the State government will re-start work on the project in three-four months. This project was planned and approved in 2014-15 when Siddaramaiah was the Chief Minister in his first term. However, the work was halted due to some technical difficulties and confusion over water sharing. Now that Mr. Siddaramaiah is back in power, it will be taken up immediately, Mr. Patil said. 'I will instruct officials to complete the Detailed Project Report (DPR) within the next three months. Work on field canals will be started in consultation with farmers in four months. I will request the Chief Minister to make an official announcement in the Cabinet meeting scheduled in Vijayapura in September,' he said. 'The welfare of farmers is a priority of our government and we are always committed to making their dreams come true,' he said. Sri Shivacharya Swami of Almel Math, MLA Rajugouda Patil, the former MLA Sharanappa Sungar, farmers leaders Arvind Kulkarni, Prabhugouda Lingadalli, Subhash Chayagol, Prabhu Biradar, Kashinath Talwar and others were present.
