Megalodon Tooth Millions of Years Old Found in Florida (Video)
Call me crazy, uneducated, or what-have-you, but I thought the ancient Megalodon shark was just a myth. A fabled creature, akin to the kraken, trumpeted by Shark Week and other fear-mongering media, to entice viewers with shock and awe into their programming. Alas, I was wrong. Recently, a diver off the Gulf Coast of Florida made the find of a lifetime, discovering a six-inch tooth from the early Miocene to early Pliocene epochs, ranging from 23 to 3.6 million years ago. It was so rare, shark experts called it: 'Like winning the lottery. One chance in a million or more.' 'We were really close to the ground,' said Kristina Scott, who found the tooth while diving off Venice in Sarasota County with her boyfriend. 'I saw just the root of it, covered in barnacle. I knew the shape. And I pulled it out of the dirt, and started freaking out. I pulled his [her boyfriend's] arm. I was trying to yell with the regulator in my mouth. But yeah, we were just stoked.'When compared to other shark teeth, this megalodon fang makes modern sharks look like sardines. But how big, exactly, were these ancient behemoths. Well, there's only fossil records to go off, but scientists have some ideas. According to a Smithsonian report on the carcharocles megalodon: 'Carcharocles megalodon was once the most fearsome predator to reign the seas. This ancient shark lived roughly 23 to 3.6 million years ago in nearly every corner of the ocean. Roughly up to 3 times the length of a modern-day great white shark, it is the largest shark to have ever lived. It had a powerful bite with a jaw full of teeth as large as an adult human's hand. They likely could tear chunks of flesh from even the largest whales of the time. It should come as no surprise that upon discovery in the fossil record, the massive shark was named Carcharocles megalodon or 'big toothed glorious shark.'' As for the rarity (and potential price tag) of such a find from the diver in Florida – as in, could she cash in on it? – the newscasters could only fathom: 'From our understanding, this is, like, museum-quality stuff…it's a big deal.'Megalodon Tooth Millions of Years Old Found in Florida (Video) first appeared on Surfer on Jun 2, 2025

Massive megalodon tooth found off Florida coast: What ‘every fossil diver dreams about'
A recent diving trip off the coast of Florida resulted in an ancient discovery. Kristina Scott found a 6-inch megalodon shark tooth while fossil diving in Venice. She said she's been fossil diving for three years and has found things ranging from mammoth and sperm whale teeth to megalodon teeth. Scott said she probably has about 100 megalodon teeth in her collection, but that's after 'many, many dives.' Scott said the biggest megalodon tooth she had ever found before this one was 4 inches long. The video showed Scott finding the enormous tooth on the sandy ocean floor. 'After I pulled this one up, I knew I had something every other fossil diver dreams about,' Scott said. According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, megalodon teeth can exceed 7 inches in length. 'I looked up how rare it is to find this size,' she said. '1% of all Megalodon shark teeth found are 6 inches.' 3 Kristina Scott found a 6-inch megalodon shark tooth while fossil diving in Venice. Dayton is cleaning up downtown ahead of NATO assembly in May
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — With just over 100 days to go until international delegates arrive in Dayton for NATO's Parliamentary Assembly, the city is working to deliver some much needed cosmetic improvements. City officials say that plans are underway to bring flowers and better lighting to areas of downtown Dayton ahead of a major influx of visitors. Portion of downtown Dayton becoming 'NATO Village' in May All throughout downtown, workers are making improvements to buildings and roads like Main Street and Third Street. The city says the operation to revitalize the downtown space includes addressing sidewalk conditions and modernizing road signs. 'What's really different this year is that we have a bigger focus on lighting and making sure that the banners are telling a story,' said Kristina Scott, vice president for strategy, Downtown Dayton Partnership. City leaders say renovations are also happening in downtown spaces like the Schuster Center. Many of these improvements have been in the works for years. 'The Convention Center has been making millions of dollars of investment in improvements, and it looks great inside,' said Scott. Officials have also invited the public to help take part in activities like painting and road clean-up to further the appearance of public spaces as the city prepares to receive thousands of international delegates and visitors. The public clean-up is scheduled for April 26. Unique performance announced ahead of Dayton's NATO assembly Local leaders planning the event add that it was necessary to include the local community for such a large-scale endeavor for the city of Dayton. 'We have an opportunity to clean up the streetscape at Third and Main to make sure that the sidewalks are safe,' said Scott. 'And to just put a shine on the entire downtown here in the city, so that we are ready for the world stage.' City leaders add that there could be more updates to signage and other downtown landmarks ahead of the event in May. Leaders add that these improvements will have a local impact to residents for years to come. 'It's really important to us that NATO is an opportunity for us to spruce up downtown, to make some improvements,' said Scott.
