1,000 take part in 4km walk to celebrate Sarawak Day

KUCHING: Some 1,000 Sarawakians took part in the inaugural 722 Walk on Tuesday (July 22) to celebrate Sarawak Day in a show of patriotism and unity. The 4km walk was jointly organised by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP). It was flagged off at MBKS Boulevard and ended with a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi next to the Sarawak River. Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the walk was a celebration of Sarawak's heritage, identity and resilience. "This is more than just a walk. It is a statement of unity, a reflection of our shared love for this land we call home," he said before flagging off the event. Sarawak Day commemorates the state's attainment of self-government from the British on July 22, 1963, prior to forming Malaysia with Malaya, Sabah and Singapore on Sept 16 the same year. It was declared a state public holiday by then chief minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem in 2016. Wee said July 22 was a significant date in Sarawak's history, marking its bold step towards self-determination. He called on Sarawakians to uphold the state's rights and status under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and remain united. "Let us not allow July 22 to be reduced to a mere ritual or celebration. "It must remain a call to action for all Sarawakians to stay united, cherish our diversity and continue working together for a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak," he said. Kuching North mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said the walk was an initiative to strengthen solidarity and unity among city folk. "It not only deepens our love for the state but brings us together regardless of background," he said.

Mayor Wee urges public to show love for Sarawak by participating in 722 Walk

Dato Wee Hong Seng KUCHING (July 20): Sarawakians are invited to show their love for the state by joining the 722 Walk next Tuesday, held in conjunction with this year's Sarawak Day celebration. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said everyone can take part in the walk in the spriit of unity to show their pride and love for Sarawak. 'The 3km-walk is set to begin at MBKS Complex, passing through Jalan Padungan, the Kuching Waterfront and Darul Hana Bridge, before concluding at Dataran Ibu Pertiwiku,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk'. Wee encouraged participants to wear the state colours of red, yellow and black, or dress in traditional or cultural attire to show their love for Sarawak. The 722 Walk is open to everyone, irrespective of their backgrounds and beliefs. The Mayor reminded all that Sarawak Day is not just a celebration, but a time to reflect on the journey that Sarawak has gone through and what Sarawakians should do for their state. The forthcoming event will feature light refreshments, a Zumba warm-up session and a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwiku. Wee believed that the walk will strengthen Sarawakians' unity, celebrate their identity and show the world what it truly means to be a Sarawakian. It will mark the first time MBKS together with Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) jointly undertake the walk, with MBKS taking the lead this time. He said non-Sarawakians are also welcome to join the walk to show their support for what Sarawak is fighting for. 'I have come across some Chinese nationals who said that they choose Sarawak because it is a safe and politically stable place. 'They choose to send their children to the international schools here, allowing the young generation to pick up both English and Bahasa Malaysia as well as local dialects such as Hokkien,' he added. 722 Walk sarawak day Wee Hong Seng
