1,000 take part in 4km walk to celebrate Sarawak Day
The 4km walk was jointly organised by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
It was flagged off at MBKS Boulevard and ended with a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi next to the Sarawak River.
Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the walk was a celebration of Sarawak's heritage, identity and resilience.
"This is more than just a walk. It is a statement of unity, a reflection of our shared love for this land we call home," he said before flagging off the event.
Sarawak Day commemorates the state's attainment of self-government from the British on July 22, 1963, prior to forming Malaysia with Malaya, Sabah and Singapore on Sept 16 the same year.
It was declared a state public holiday by then chief minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem in 2016.
Wee said July 22 was a significant date in Sarawak's history, marking its bold step towards self-determination.
He called on Sarawakians to uphold the state's rights and status under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and remain united.
"Let us not allow July 22 to be reduced to a mere ritual or celebration.
"It must remain a call to action for all Sarawakians to stay united, cherish our diversity and continue working together for a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak," he said.
Kuching North mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said the walk was an initiative to strengthen solidarity and unity among city folk.
"It not only deepens our love for the state but brings us together regardless of background," he said.

UK regulator to probe 34 porn sites over age-checks
LONDON: The UK's media watchdog said Thursday it has launched investigations into 34 pornography websites over their compliance with new age-check requirements to prevent children accessing harmful online content. Ofcom said it would probe four firms that run the dozens of sites to assess whether they had 'highly effective' age verification measures in place, after the new rules came into force last week. The long-anticipated Online Safety Act, which took effect on July 25, aims to hinder youngsters from encountering content relating to suicide, self-harm and eating disorders as well as porn. It requires websites and apps hosting potentially harmful pages and posts to implement age checks using measures such as facial imagery or credit cards. Those found to be failing can face fines of up to £18 million ($23 million) or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater. The new regime has been hailed by campaigners as a milestone in their years-long battle for stronger regulations but criticised by some -- particularly those on the political right -- as an assault on free speech. Its rollout has reportedly prompted a huge spike in downloads of virtual private networks (VPNs) software, which allows browsers to appear as if they are in another country. The most popular free apps on Apple's UK download store since last week have been VPNs, with one, Proton, reporting earlier this week a 1,800 percent rise in downloads, according to British media. In its announcement Thursday, Ofcom said it had prioritised probing the four companies based on the risk of harm posed by the 34 sites they run and their user numbers. Collectively, the websites had over nine million UK visitors per month, according to the regulator. The new cases add to Ofcom's 11 existing investigations into various platforms, including 4chan, an online forum known for 'incel' culture and rampant misinformation. – AFP

Uggah (front sixth right) and other officials are seen during the state-level Warriors' Day 2025 event. – Ukas photo KUCHING (July 31): The sacrifices of heroes who defended the country's sovereignty across generations were remembered with solemn respect at the state-level Warriors' Day 2025 ceremony today. A Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas officiated at the event at the Heroes Monument in Taman Budaya here on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. In his speech, Abang Johari said Sarawakians must realise that the peace and prosperity experienced today were not achieved overnight but through long and continuous struggle. 'The privileges we enjoy today came at the cost of great sacrifices by the nation's warriors. It took tremendous effort and the ultimate sacrifice by our heroes to defend every inch of our beloved land and their blood, sweat and hardship laid the foundation for the peace we enjoy today,' said the Premier. He said Warriors' Day serves as a symbol of appreciation and remembrance for those who fought to uphold the nation's sovereignty, from the pre-independence era through to the present day. 'Symbolically, this day reminds us of the courage of those who stood firm against threats to our sovereignty and their sacrifices must be remembered for all time, as they shaped the civilisation we live in today,' he said. The Premier called on Malaysians to remain grateful for the harmony and well-being enjoyed today. 'All the comfort and safety we experience are the direct result of the sacrifices of our comrades in the past. This peace is a divine gift, born of their bravery and hardship,' he said. He also urged the public to continue honouring the memory of fallen heroes by praying for them and extending support to their families. Among those present were Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datu Buckland Bangik, and Eastern Field Command Health Services chief Dr Shamsul Bahary Muhamad. Contractor to redesign KUTS project barriers at Tabuan Stutong Commercial Centre entrance
Wee (right), See (second left), and others are seen during mediation with the contractor. KUCHING (July 31): A contractor for Sarawak Metro, which is the implementer of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, has agreed to dismantle proposed barriers at an entrance to the Tabuan Stutong Commercial Centre. Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the move would accommodate the needs of a business operator. 'The contractor has assured that the proposed barriers, which cause blockage to the main entrance of the retail shop at Tabuan Stutong, will be dismantled and its layout will be redesigned to suit the needs of the business operator,' he said in a statement today following mediation at the site. A shop owner had complained about barriers put up at the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) construction site on Jalan Wan Alwi. The affected business operator, who is the tenant occupying a ground floor corner shophouse at Tabuan Stutong, claimed his retail outlet was gravely affected by the approximately four-metre-high barriers. He expressed fear that the barriers would result in a significant drop in sales during the ART construction period. Wee said any development project, be it undertaken by the government or private sector, must be carried out in accordance with laws and regulations, minimising inconvenience. 'As the mayor, I have a pivotal role to play in community engagement, especially when it comes to addressing people's interests or predicament vis-a-vis government agencies,' he said. He slammed certain quarters who took the opportunity to politicise ART or issues arising from the KUTS project to achieve political mileage instead of helping the aggrieved parties resolve matters. 'We need development at one hand but not at the expense of our people, especially at this very challenging time of economic struggle by all sectors including but not limited to retail businesses,' said Wee. He also thanked Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, councillor Eric Tay, and other community leaders, who were present to show their support and concern.
