IPL 2025 grand finale: Fans to get new champion in RCB or PBKS on June 3

As the sun sets on an stop and start IPL 2025 season, all eyes now turn to the grand finale: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) — a contest set to produce a new IPL champion, set to unfold on June 3 at 7:30 PM IST. Both teams, hungry for their maiden IPL title, have defied expectations and crafted memorable campaigns filled with grit, brilliance, and belief. The stage is set at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and anticipation couldn't be higher. Punjab Kings, once known for their inconsistency, have found a new gear in 2025. Under the fearless leadership of Shreyas Iyer and the tactical sharpness of their backroom staff-led by Australian legend Ricky Ponting, PBKS have delivered clinical performances when it mattered most. Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar, speaking on Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live, credited the fearless mindset shown by players like Josh Inglis, whose aggressive assault against Mumbai Indians' spearhead Jasprit Bumrah shifted the semifinal's momentum. "Inglis didn't play the reputation — he played the ball. He broke the fear factor around Bumrah, which was a huge mental lift for the dugout,' Bangar noted. Punjab's Qualifier 2 triumph saw the captain Iyer produce one of the standout knocks of the season — an innings hailed by the legendary AB de Villiers as a "masterclass under pressure." AB de Villiers stands by Hardik Pandya amid MI exit The fallout from Mumbai Indians' exit has seen captain Hardik Pandya under heavy scrutiny. But de Villiers was quick to shift focus back to the cricketing brilliance on display. "They were outplayed by quality cricket, not poor execution. Shreyas and Inglis made the difference. You can't fault Hardik for being outclassed on the day — that's the beauty of the game," he emphasised. MI vs PBKS Qualifier 2 full scorecard Sanjay Bangar echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how one moment — Trent Boult's dropped catch of Nehal Wadhera — shifted the semifinal's dynamics, underlining how high-pressure games often turn on fine margins. RCB and Virat Kohli eye maiden IPL title The Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured their spot in the IPL 2025 final with a dominant performance in Qualifier 1, defeating table-toppers Punjab Kings by 8 wickets. This victory marks RCB's fourth appearance in an IPL final and their first in nine years. Coincidentally, the last time they made the final—and finished in the top two—was back in 2016. Led by Rajat Patidar, RCB's road to the final has been defined by consistency and resilience. Reflecting on the team's journey, RCB's Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, said: 'We're incredibly proud of how the team has approached the season — with courage, calmness, and a strong intent to dominate. These qualities highlight the character we've built as a unit. While we've hit a few key targets along the way, this final is the one that truly counts.'

'Players known for stepping up in knockouts': AB de Villiers on MIs performance in Eliminator

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 31 (ANI): After the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash between the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI), former South Africa captain AB de Villiers reflected on the Hardik Pandya-led side's clinical knockout performance in the Eliminator of the 18th edition of the cash-rich league. A brilliant half-century by Sai Sudharsan and his partnership with Washington Sundar went in vain as fine death bowling effort from the five-time champions helped the Blue and Gold franchise eliminate the 2022 champions from the competition with a 20-run win at Mullanpur on Friday. With this win, MI will now play Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Ahmedabad on June 1 for a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on June 3. Speaking on MI's victory on Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live on JioHotstar, JioStar expert AB de Villiers said, "The players known for stepping up in knockouts faced their fears and delivered. No one gave GT a chance at the halfway mark, but MI held their nerve - especially Jasprit Bumrah, who just keeps delivering in the big moments. A key turning point was Sai Sudharsan's dismissal. He'd nailed that shot all season, but it didn't come off when it mattered most. Everything seemed to go wrong for GT - dropped catches, hit wickets, chaotic moments - yet they still made it a contest." Coming to the match, MI won the toss and elected to bat first. They started off with a bang, with Jonny Bairstow (47 in 22 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Rohit Sharma taking on pacers really well. Rohit went on to score his third fifty in IPL knockouts, making 81 in just 50 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. He also completed his 7,000 IPL runs, becoming the second batter to do so. Fine cameos from Suryakumar Yadav (33 in 20 balls, with a four and three sixes), Tilak Varma (25 in 11 balls, with three sixes) and Hardik Pandya (22* in nine balls, with three sixes) took MI to 228/5. Sai Kishore (2/42) and Prasidh Krishna (2/53) were the top bowlers for GT. In the run chase, GT lost skipper Shubman Gill early. However, Sai Sudharsan (80 in 49 balls, with 10 fours and a six) stitched half-century partnerships with Kusal Mendis (20 in 10 balls, with a four and two sixes) and Washington Sundar (48 in 24 balls, with five fours and three sixes), keeping GT ahead of the required rate. However, some fine death bowling prevented them from winning as MI restricted GT to 208/6 in 20 overs. Trent Boult (2/56) was the top bowler for MI. Jasprit Bumrah, Richard Gleeson, Ashwani Kumar and Mitchell Santner got one each.

Game's not over till Bumrah bowls, hails MI's nerve vs GT: AB de Villiers

In what turned out to be a high-stakes, nerve-wracking encounter, the Mumbai Indians held their nerve to knock out the Gujarat Titans, drawing praise from cricketing greats AB de Villiers and Robin Uthappa. Speaking on Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live on JioHotstar, the JioStar experts dissected the game-changing moments that swung the thriller in MI's favour. Bumrah, the inevitable closer Reflecting on the performance, AB de Villiers singled out Jasprit Bumrah as the key to Mumbai's success in crunch situations. 'The players known for stepping up in knockouts faced their fears and delivered,' said de Villiers. 'No one gave GT a chance at the halfway mark, but MI held their nerve – especially Jasprit Bumrah, who just keeps delivering in the big moments.' Bumrah's decisive spell included the dismissal of the in-form Sai Sudharsan – a moment de Villiers identified as a turning point. 'Sai had nailed that shot all season, but it didn't come off when it mattered most,' he noted, adding that GT's series of misfortunes – dropped catches, chaotic dismissals, and a hit-wicket – only added to the drama. De Villiers also lauded MI skipper Hardik Pandya's tactical nous in managing Bumrah's overs. 'Credit to Hardik for holding Bumrah back until the right time. Sai had been playing him well, so delaying his return was a smart move,' he said. 'Before Bumrah came back for his final two overs, I told my son, 'This game isn't over until he's done bowling.' Once again, he showed why he's one of the best.' Fellow JioStar expert Robin Uthappa was equally impressed with Rohit Sharma's composed response after a shaky start. 'After the early drop, Rohit flirted with danger briefly but quickly recognised the need to take control,' said Uthappa. 'He shifted gears, played responsibly, found the gaps, and built key partnerships. His composure stood out.' Uthappa compared Rohit's presence at the crease to that of other greats like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. 'When players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli are batting, the pressure is on everyone else. Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that level too,' he added, recognising the young GT batter's emergence despite the loss. GT's fielding and strategy under fire While applauding the contest, Uthappa was candid in his criticism of Gujarat Titans' approach. 'GT's strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in the middle overs – was a misstep. His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct,' he said. The two costly overs that went for 26 and 22 runs were emblematic of GT's off-day. 'On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship,' he added bluntly. MI vs Punjab: Uthappa predicts a blockbuster Looking ahead, Uthappa predicted fireworks as Mumbai prepares to face Punjab in their next outing. 'Punjab are hurting and will come out firing. Mumbai, riding high on momentum, will bring intensity as well,' he said. 'It's set to be a blockbuster, one for the ages.' With legends like Bumrah peaking in form and leadership across the board stepping up under pressure, the IPL knockout stage promises more drama and high-quality cricket.

Sanjay Manjrekar lauds Sameer Rizvi's knock against Punjab Kings in IPL 2025

New Delhi [India], May 25 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed uncapped right-hand batter Sameer Rizvi for his mature and composed innings under pressure during Delhi Capitals' (DC) win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 66 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Sameer Rizvi played an unbeaten innings of 58 runs from just 25 balls at a whopping strike rate of 232, laced with five maximums and three fours. The right-hand batter was awarded Player of the Match for this exceptional inning. Speaking on Rivi's knock at the Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live on JioHotstar, JioStar expert Sanjay Manjrekar said, 'He's coming of age, like many young Indian players this season. It hasn't been about the big names -- this IPL has belonged to the younger lot. What stood out in this innings was how he dominated spin and found ways to score against quality bowlers like Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh. And this was a proper chase -- there wasn't any advantage from dew, which can sometimes make it feel like you're already 20 runs ahead. That wasn't the case, and if not for Rizvi, I don't think Delhi Capitals would've pulled it off.' Further, Manjrekar observed how the 18th edition of the cash-rich league has been defined by Gen Bold players. 'The big takeaway for me this IPL is the emergence of lesser-known players making a huge impact -- names like Sameer Rizvi, Shashank Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Naman Dhir, Priyansh Arya, and Prabhsimran Singh. There's even a 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the mix. It's been their IPL, more than the big iconic names. Those stars are fading, and these young players are taking centre stage -- that's been the story so far,' the 59-year-old added. Coming to the match, DC won the toss and opted to bowl first. Half-century from skipper Shreyas Iyer (53 in 34 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and a quickfire cameo from Marcus Stoinis (44* in 16 balls, with three fours and four sixes) guided PBKS to 206/8. Mustafizur Rahman (3/33) and spinners Vipraj Nigam (2/38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/39) excelled with the ball for DC. In the chase, DC started well with a 55-run stand between Rahul (35 in 21 balls, with six fours and a six) and Faf Du Plessis (23 in 15 balls, with two fours and a six). Nair (44 in 27 balls, with five fours and two sixes) paired up with Sameer (58* in 25 balls, with three fours and five sixes) to lay down the foundation for a perfect finish. While Nair and Sameer put on a 62-run stand, Sameer and Tristan Stubbs (18*) also put on a 53-run stand to win the game with three balls left. DC ended the season with seven wins, six losses and a no result, giving them 15 points. PBKS are in the second spot, with eight wins, four losses and a no result, giving them 17 points. (ANI)
