Game's not over till Bumrah bowls, hails MI's nerve vs GT: AB de Villiers
In what turned out to be a high-stakes, nerve-wracking encounter, the Mumbai Indians held their nerve to knock out the Gujarat Titans, drawing praise from cricketing greats AB de Villiers and Robin Uthappa. Speaking on Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live on JioHotstar, the JioStar experts dissected the game-changing moments that swung the thriller in MI's favour.
Bumrah, the inevitable closer
Reflecting on the performance, AB de Villiers singled out Jasprit Bumrah as the key to Mumbai's success in crunch situations. 'The players known for stepping up in knockouts faced their fears and delivered,' said de Villiers. 'No one gave GT a chance at the halfway mark, but MI held their nerve – especially Jasprit Bumrah, who just keeps delivering in the big moments.'
Bumrah's decisive spell included the dismissal of the in-form Sai Sudharsan – a moment de Villiers identified as a turning point. 'Sai had nailed that shot all season, but it didn't come off when it mattered most,' he noted, adding that GT's series of misfortunes – dropped catches, chaotic dismissals, and a hit-wicket – only added to the drama.
De Villiers also lauded MI skipper Hardik Pandya's tactical nous in managing Bumrah's overs. 'Credit to Hardik for holding Bumrah back until the right time. Sai had been playing him well, so delaying his return was a smart move,' he said. 'Before Bumrah came back for his final two overs, I told my son, 'This game isn't over until he's done bowling.' Once again, he showed why he's one of the best.'
Fellow JioStar expert Robin Uthappa was equally impressed with Rohit Sharma's composed response after a shaky start. 'After the early drop, Rohit flirted with danger briefly but quickly recognised the need to take control,' said Uthappa. 'He shifted gears, played responsibly, found the gaps, and built key partnerships. His composure stood out.'
Uthappa compared Rohit's presence at the crease to that of other greats like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. 'When players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli are batting, the pressure is on everyone else. Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that level too,' he added, recognising the young GT batter's emergence despite the loss.
GT's fielding and strategy under fire
While applauding the contest, Uthappa was candid in his criticism of Gujarat Titans' approach. 'GT's strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in the middle overs – was a misstep. His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct,' he said.
The two costly overs that went for 26 and 22 runs were emblematic of GT's off-day. 'On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship,' he added bluntly.
MI vs Punjab: Uthappa predicts a blockbuster
Looking ahead, Uthappa predicted fireworks as Mumbai prepares to face Punjab in their next outing. 'Punjab are hurting and will come out firing. Mumbai, riding high on momentum, will bring intensity as well,' he said. 'It's set to be a blockbuster, one for the ages.'
With legends like Bumrah peaking in form and leadership across the board stepping up under pressure, the IPL knockout stage promises more drama and high-quality cricket.

‘We have not taken that call': Gautam Gambhir mum on which matches Jasprit Bumrah will play in England Test series
India coach Gautam Gambhir remained tight-lipped on which three of the five Tests Jasprit Bumrah will take part in when India take on England later this month. He also said that the Indian bowling unit has enough talent to plug in the gap in case of the premier pacer's unavailability. 'We have not taken that call that which three games we want (him) to play,' Gambhir said, though it is not certain if Bumrah would play only three Tests. 'Look it's always difficult to replace someone like Jasprit Bumrah but we have got enough quality. 'I have said it before (also) during the Champions Trophy as well that it gives someone else the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent. I know that he is a quality (bowler) but we have got enough quality in the squad,' Gambhir told the media during his pre-departure press conference with new Test captain Shubman Gill. The India coach also hinted that Bumrah's appearances will depend on how India are positioned in the series. 'Obviously we want to have a discussion with him and it depends on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series as well (as to) where it is heading. That is something which I am very well aware of as well and that is important,' he said. Captain Gill, meanwhile, echoed the coach's words saying that the pace attack is quite capable of filling Gill also spoke in the same vein and said the Indian pace attack can not only fill in for Bumrah but also win Test matches from any situation. 'We have picked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery and our fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation and any position,' he said. 'When you have Jasprit Bumrah… depending on how many matches you would play him, but whenever he would come back and play it would be a great sight for us, but I think we have a great mix and set of bowlers who can get the job done for the team,' he added.

India yet to take a call on which three Tests Bumrah will play
The Indian team management is yet to decide which three Tests Jasprit Bumrah will feature in the upcoming five-match series in England, but head coach Gautam Gambhir and newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill made it clear that there's enough depth in its pace attack. 'We haven't taken that call, which three games is he going to play,' Gambhir said on Thursday. 'We are going to have a discussion with him and (it will) depend on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important.' Fitness worry While announcing the squad last month, the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, said that Bumrah had been advised by medical staff not to risk playing back-to-back Tests as part of his workload management in the wake of him breaking down during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January. But Gambhir believes that this will also be an opportunity for the rest of the pace attack, comprising Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Shardul Thakur to stand up and deliver. 'I have said it before during the Champions Trophy (which Bumrah missed) as well, it will give someone the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent there. I know that he is quality but we have got enough quality apart from him as well in the squad.' WTC cycle Under the leadership of Gill, the five Tests against England will be India's first in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, and the young captain believes that there's enough firepower in the bowling department. 'We have picked enough bowlers and we have a good enough pace battery and a lot of fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation or any position,' Gill said.

Shubman Gill won't find Test captaincy easy, needs to work on batting: Ricky Ponting
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes Shubman Gill's promotion to India's Test captaincy comes with more challenges and feels the young batter would be better off moving down to No. 4 in the batting order during the demanding five-Test series in England, starting June 20."His white-ball form has been incredibly good. He's got a little bit of work to do on his Test match batting. And that's never easy when you're a new captain, to have to worry about your batting to the degree that he's going to have to, it won't be easy for him," Ponting told PTI during the IPL, where he coached Punjab Kings to the who began his Test career as an opener, has in recent months batted at No. 3. With the additional burden of captaincy, Ponting feels it is prudent to shield him slightly in the batting order. "India have made the right investment in Gill the captain," he said. "I actually named him as captain for the Sydney Test match last summer when Rohit didn't play that game and there was a bit of an injury cloud over Bumrah, or as that game went on, Bumrah actually broke down in that game."And look, I don't know Shubman that well. I've spoken to him six, eight, 10 times, maybe the last couple of years around different things and around batting and around leadership. He's done a great job with GT (Gujarat Titans), no doubt about that," he he just seemed the sort of guy that the extra responsibility wouldn't faze too much. It seems like he's got a really level head on his shoulders. He's someone that's going to be around in Indian cricket for another 10 years."In his 32-Test career, Gill has shown flair but also a tendency to play with hard hands-a habit that has often led to his downfall in challenging conditions. His defensive game, in particular, has come under believes the issue is more mental than technical. "...it's a bit both, there's some of the great Test players that haven't had great defensive games, (Virender) Sehwag is probably a great example of that."But if you're in control of your stroke-play, you don't have to worry too much about your defence. I mean, obviously it's (defence) a big part of Test match cricket, but I think it's more his mental application," he doesn't see a major flaw in Gill's technique, but he warned against lapses in focus. "(But) I think sometimes you might just get a little bit either ahead of himself or a little bit lazy in the middle of a Test match innings. You can't afford to do that. You've got to be 100 per cent committed to every ball that you face through six or seven hours of every think that's the challenge for Shubman..." Ponting has slotted Gill at number four in his XI for the opening Test at Leeds, depending on the composition of the top order."...the reason I did that was if they go with (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, and if Sai Sudarshan is the other opener, they need someone a bit more experienced at number three. So that could be either, KL at three, or that could be a Karun Nair at three and Shubman at four."...once you grow into it, then you can move yourself back up to that number three spot," Ponting said, backing Gill to eventually reclaim a more prominent position in the batting order as he grows into his leadership In
