After 15 years, first commercial flight set to take off from the refurbished Solapur airport on June 9
Kolhapur: After a gap of roughly 15 years, the Solapur airport is resuming commercial flight operations with a new route to Goa starting June 9. Ticket bookings are currently available. In Sept 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fully refurbished Solapur airport. The facility has undergone extensive renovations costing Rs 60 crore. The upgraded terminal can now accommodate 150 passengers during peak hours and 4.1 lakh passengers yearly. The facility now boasts two check-in counters, expanded aircraft parking spaces, a new fire station, updated air traffic control, vehicle parking for 100 cars, complete LED illumination, and power-efficient systems. Solapur district collector Kumar Ashirwad told TOI: "A Goa-based airline operator is starting the service to Goa four times a week — Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The bookings for the first flight are full. We are planning to expand the air services to Tirupati and Mumbai soon." Security assessment exercises were conducted at the facility on Wednesday. The airport is a participant in the govt's UDAN-Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik initiative, designed to provide affordable air travel. The flight schedule shows departures from Goa at 7.20am, reaching Solapur at 8.30am on Mondays and Fridays, with a return flight after 20 minutes, landing in Goa at 10.05am. Weekend services leave Goa at 4.05pm, arrive in Solapur at 5.10pm, and return to Goa for a 6.50pm landing.

2 crore to be allocated from DPDC funds to tackle pollution in Solapur's Siddheshwar lake: District collector
1 2 Kolhapur: The Solapur district collector has stated that Rs1.5-2 crore will be allocated from the District Planning Development Committees (DPDC) funds to control pollution in Siddheshwar lake, almost two weeks after a host of dead fish and softshell turtles were found floating on the waterbody near the famous Siddheshwar temple in Solapur city. The district administration stated that the fish and turtles died as pH levels in the water decreased due to pollution. However, to now improve purity and quality of the lake water, the public works department (PWD) should appoint an agency and submit an action plan and order to start work by June 15, Solapur district collector Kumar Ashirwad instructed. A review meeting was organised at the collectorate regarding the Siddheshwar Lake pollution issue on Wednesday. Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC) commissioner Sachin Ombase, additional commissioners Sandeep Karanje and Ravi Pawar, PWD executive engineer Manoj Thackeray, city engineer Sarika Ankulwar, public engineer Venkatesh Chobe, district disaster management officer Shaktisagar Dhole, and others were present. Ashirwad stated, "PWD should appoint a private agency to increase purity of water in Siddheshwar Lake under tourism development initiatives. Purification should be done through irrigation treatment, and oxygen content should be increased so that there is no danger to fish, turtles, and other aquatic life. An action plan should be submitted for this, and work should start by June 15, 2025."

Solapur collector forms panel on fire safety
Kolhapur: Following the fire at a textile factory that killed eight people, including the 87-year-old factory owner and his 18-month-old grandson, Solapur collector Kumar Ashirwad has established a committee to recommend fire prevention measures. On Tuesday, Ashirwad convened a meeting with the officials of the municipal corporation, Mahavitaran representatives, industry department personnel, and powerloom association members to address disaster prevention strategies. The MIDC has been instructed to create a subcommittee, comprising departmental heads and Solapur Powerloom Association representatives, to develop a comprehensive safety action plan for submission by next month. Additionally, Ashirwad proposed installing water feeder points in MIDC areas to expedite fire tender refilling, addressing concerns raised by relatives about delayed response times due to slow water replenishment. Mahavitaran's electrical inspectors have been directed to examine the power supply distribution system, while a third-party agency will conduct fire safety audits in MIDC areas. Municipal commissioner Sachin Ombase presented details about construction, roads, and power distribution systems in the MIDC area related to the towel factory fire, emphasising that residential accommodations should be prohibited in MIDC factories. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Credit Card Picks GoSearches | Search Ads Get Info Undo According to sub-divisional officer Sadashiv Padadune, the Central Textile factory fire likely originated from a short circuit. Despite a prompt fire brigade response, inadequate road access impeded their approach, allowing the fire to escalate. The situation was eventually managed by demolishing the building's wall using a JCB, enabling rescue operations and fire control. Powerloom owners' representatives attributed frequent MIDC area fires to inconsistent voltage supply from the power distribution company. They maintained that regular and appropriate voltage supply to MIDC industries could prevent short-circuit-related fire incidents.
