New substations to improve power supply in Mys: Min
Mysuru: Energy minister KG George on Wednesday revealed plans to set up 44 new substations in Mysuru district to enhance power distribution. Speaking to reporters after a review meeting, he assured farmers about Aadhar linkage with irrigation pumpset connections and confirmed immediate electricity provisions for tribal settlements. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Works of these 44 power transmission substations will be completed within two years. Although there is no power problem at present, supply is becoming a problem due to lack of infrastructure. The number of power transmission substations is being increased to overcome this problem," he said. "All kinds of measures are being taken to provide adequate power to farmers' pumpsets. Out of the 4 lakh illegal pumpsets in the state, 2.5 lakh pumpsets were regularised. The department will provide transformers to pumpsets within 500 meters of the feeders. Solar pumpsets will be provided to pumpsets beyond 500 meters under the Kusum-B scheme. Similarly, feeder solarization is being done under the Kusum-C scheme to provide adequate power to farmers during the day," he said. "Our govt has set a target of generating 2,400 MW of solar power through feeder solarization of agricultural pumpsets under the Kusum-C scheme. Chief minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the solar power plant set up under the Kusum-M scheme at Tondebhavi in Gauribidanur on June 11," he said. The minister dismissed rumours regarding the discontinuation of free electricity for agricultural pumpsets due to Aadhar-RR number linkage. "This seeding work was done to ascertain how much electricity is being supplied to farmers and how many connections they have. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Along with continuing free electricity up to 10 HP for agricultural pumpsets, adequate electricity will also be supplied for seven hours. There is no doubt about this," he said. "After the chief minister's recent visit to the hamlets, necessary steps were taken to provide electricity to them and necessary infrastructure was built. Steps were taken to provide electricity to more than 600 hamlet houses," he said. State sugarcane growers' association members demonstrated outside the zilla panchayat office during the minister's review meeting. Their demands included withdrawing the Aadhar seeding proposal and compensation for farmers whose lands were acquired for high tension lines infrastructure.

100 new power sub-stations proposed in State: George
In a move to improve the efficiency of the State's power distribution network, Karnataka is set to establish 100 new sub-stations. The ambitious project is expected to be completed within the designated timeline, according to Energy Minister K.J. George. After a progress review meeting with the district's public representatives here on Wednesday, the Minster told reporters that the project had been conceptualised to develop essential infrastructure aimed at delivering reliable and high-quality power supply. In Mysuru district alone, 44 power transmission substations were expected to be commissioned within two years, ensuring quality power supply to farmers and the public. Although there was currently no power shortage, lack of basic infrastructure was causing supply issues. To resolve this, the number of power transmission substations was being increased, Mr. George said. All steps were being taken to provide reliable electricity supply to farmers' pumpsets. Of the 4 lakh illegal pumpsets in the State, 2.5 lakh had been regularised. For pumpsets located within 500 metres of feeders, the department would provide transformers. For pumpsets located beyond 500 metres, solar pump sets would be provided under the Kusum-B scheme, the Minister said. Solar power Mr. George said the government had set a target of generating 2,400 megawatts of solar power through feeder solarisation of agricultural pumpsets under the Kusum-C scheme. On June 11, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would inaugurate the solar power plant established under the Kusum scheme at Thondebhavi in Gauribidanur. The Energy Minister said that linking Aadhaar with the RR numbers of agricultural pumpsets had sparked rumours about discontinuing free electricity, and clarified that the process aimed at verifying the amount of electricity supplied to farmers and the number of existing connections. He assured that free electricity would continue for agricultural pumpsets up to 10 HP and that farmers would receive a proper seven-hour electricity supply. The Minister said after the Chief Minister recently visited the haadis (tribal hamlets), steps had been taken to supply electricity to them, and required infrastructure was being developed. Steps had been made to supply electricity to more than 600 haadi households, he said. During the meeting, MLA Tanveer Sait said Mysuru was a rapidly growing city, and CESC should prioritise resource mobilisation. Under the Ganga Kalyana scheme, electricity connection should be provided immediately after borewells were drilled. In drinking water supply schemes, due to overload in pump houses, frequent power trips was occurring, he said. MLA Srivatsa sought greater attention to the electricity supply problems affecting drinking water distribution. In response, Mr. George said steps will be taken to ensure proper electricity supply not just in Mysuru city, but across the district. Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department Gaurav Gupta said steps had been taken to provide electricity during the daytime in forest fringe areas. Measures had been taken to ensure that there were no issues in regions where there was human-wildlife conflict. MLAs G.T. Devegowda, K. Harish Gowda, D. Ravishankar, MLCs K. Vivekananda, Dr. D. Thimmaiah, KPCL Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Deputy Commissioner Lakshmikant Reddy, Zilla Panchayat CEO Yukesh Kumar, CESC Managing Director K.M. Munigopal Raju, Guarantee Implementation Committee Vice President Dr. Pushpa Amarnath, and others were present.

Karnataka to launch Kusum-C solar scheme on June 11
BENGALURU: The state government is taking steps to increase solar power generation, and will inaugurate the implementation of Kusum-C scheme at Gauribidanur in Chikkaballapur on June 11. The Kusum-C is a component of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme. It enables solarising existing grid-connected agricultural pumps, and aims to reduce farmers' reliance on electricity and generate additional income through selling excess solar power to power distribution companies. It supports both individual pump-level solarisation and feeder-level solarisation, where a single solar power plant powers multiple pumps. Admitting to hiccups in procuring private land to instal solar panels, Energy Minister KJ George said wherever government land is available, panels are being installed. All deputy commissioners have been directed to find land and start work. Panchayats will also be able to use the land available for utility works, he added.

8 villages tap solar power, help Bescom meet summer surge
1 2 Bengaluru: Halkurike, a little-known hamlet in Tiptur taluk of Tumakuru district, helps Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) manage peak demand every day. It is among nine villages in districts around Bengaluru which have not only reduced the burden on Bescom 's grid by running IP sets on solar power but also feed about 68Mw to the grid daily from their own plants commissioned under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM Kusum-C) project. Surrounded by paddy fields, arecanut and coconut plantations, these villages in Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Tumakuru and Davanagere districts used to consume a lot of power to operate IP sets. Now, these IP sets run on solar power generated locally. "But the demand from residential and commercial consumers in and around Bengaluru shoots up during summer making it a challenge to manage both demands and ensure no blackout on either side," said an engineer from Bescom. N Shivashankara, managing director, Bescom, said: "Now, power from these plants is fed to nearby substations, ensuring quality power to farmers during the day. This reduces the burden on the grid as the demand is met locally." The state govt has chosen multiple agencies to execute the project across Karnataka. "They set up and operate solar plants for a 25-year duration. The govt only identifies land. The agencies take this land on lease for a minimum of Rs 25,000 per acre per year. "While it costs Rs 3.5 crore to Rs 4 crore to generate one megawatt of power, the agencies get a subsidy of slightly over Rs 1 crore from the central govt. We buy power from them at Rs 2.9 to Rs 3.1 per unit," an engineer said. Gaurav Gupta, additional chief secretary (energy), said 150-plus locations have been chosen for the Kusum-C project in Bescom limits alone. "In the first phase, 96 locations have been indentified, and the remaining 54 will be executed during the second phase. Work began on 50-60 stations and eight of them are already operational." Mission to save 2,400Mw daily Spread over 20 acres, the Rs 4 crore solar plant at Halkurike Revana Siddeshwara Betta has 8,020 solar panels each of 550w. Together they generate about 4Mw of energy daily. "The plants get sunlight for about eight hours a day, generating 8,000 units (9.6 lakh units a month)," said Manohar TL, assistant executive engineer, Bescom at Tiptur. As many as 2,531 IP sets of different power capacities within a radius of 8-10km are linked to Halkurike feeder, which collectively consume about 30 lakh units per month. "Of these 30 lakh units, 10 lakh units are drawn directly from the local solar plant. This is a major relief as it takes off nearly half the load on the grid. Saved power can be supplied to other consumers," Manohar said. Bescom hopes to save 2,400Mw daily when all its planned 150 Kusum-C stations are operational. Energy minister KJ George said: "Our objective is to generate 3,000Mw under the Kusum-C scheme over the next 18 months. By this monsoon, we intend to add at least 300Mw of solar power to the grid through these plants. We have been appealing to MLAs to help us identify land within their constituencies for speedy implementation of the project."
