Book fair vendors have final shot at boosting sales
Book fair vendors have final shot at boosting sales Exhibitors at the book fair offer discounts and special promotions to boost sales. Photo: RTHK Many booklovers flocked to the fair to find bargains. Photo: RTHK Exhibitors at the Hong Kong Book Fair made a last-ditch effort to boost sales on Tuesday, offering additional discounts and promotions on the final day of the annual event. The fair, held alongside the World of Snacks fair and the Sports and Leisure Expo at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, didn't open on Sunday when Typhoon Wipha skirted past the city. Alva Au, director of Cosmos Books, said the publisher was offering special offers on certain books to try to make up for the business disruption over the weekend. 'Our business has been greatly affected by the typhoon. Saturday and Sunday are [traditionally] the two days with the best sales at the book fair. And I don't think we can make up for the loss on the Sunday. I think it's about a 20 to 30 percent [drop in business],' she said. 'In the beginning, we offered 20 percent off. And today, we selected some special books and can offer 30 percent off. We hope it can attract more people.' To boost sales, major publishers like Commercial Press, Chung Hwa Book and Ming Pao also slashed prices on selected books, to as low as HK$10 each. There were also special offers like "HK$100 for 10 books" and extra discounts for more purchases, as vendors tried to sell as many books as they could. The fair was fairly quiet in the morning, but crowds of people started flocking there in the afternoon looking for bargains. A visitor surnamed Kwok planned to spend about HK$1,000. 'I came a few days ago and I had a great experience. I came back to find some discounted books,' she said. Another bookworm, a woman surnamed Yu returned to the fair with her son after going alone last week. 'The discounts today are much larger compared to last time,' she said. 'I returned to the same publisher to make purchases. Previously, they offered about 20 to 30 percent off, but this time it's up to 60 percent off. I'm buying books that were previously only on my wish list or under consideration. I have a budget of about HK$2,000 to HK$3,000 today.'

The Kansas City Chiefs have a presence at the 2025 NFL FLAG Championships
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Stephanie Kwok, the Vice President and head of Flag Football, to discuss the impact the Kansas City Chiefs and the rest of the league are having on the ongoing NFL FLAG-In-School program with GENYOUth and this weekend's 2025 NFL FLAG Championships. "We've got 300 teams coming out, about 3,000 athletes. Everything's going to broadcast on ESPN and Disney channels as well as the NFL network." said Kwok, "So looking forward to a long weekend of flag football and some of the best youth flag football will be going on in the country and and in and in the world, with some of our international teams coming too." Ten youth flag football teams will represent the Kansas City Chiefs at the 2025 NFL FLAG Championships at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton, Ohio. The teams qualified through last October's NFL FLAG Regional Tournament and compete in Chiefs-branded uniforms. "It's so interesting because flag football has been around for a long time, for decades as a recreational sport, but over the last few years, we've just seen that growth explode. I think there have been a lot of factors. I think the tailwind of the Olympic announcement back in late 2023 certainly helps with that." said Kwok, "But I think it's really to the culmination of a lot of the grassroots efforts that we've been seeing by all of the NFL clubs, by NFL itself, by all of the organizations in the community, just continuing to build flag football, continuing to build especially opportunities for girls to play in high school, for them to go then go on and play in college, so now you're seeing that momentum. With over 30 states offering high school programs for girls, there are more than 100 colleges that have either varsity or club teams as well. So that's a snapshot of all the growth we saw in the U.S., not even mentioned globally." The KC Novas, Prairie Fire, Thunder Monkeys II, KC Shockers 12u, Thunder Monkeys, Grip Boost Elite, KC Heat—Red, and KC Shockers will represent Kansas. The KC Kings and Mambas will join them from Missouri. "We've got the NFL FLAG-In-School program as well, which GENYOUth runs and which the NFL Foundation funds, that is just trying to help increase that accessibility," said Kwok. "But we're seeing that, not just at the elementary school levels, but that carries through with the accessibility. So I think one really interesting statistic in high school is that 50% of the girls on the high school flag football team are playing a high school sport for the first time, so we're just increasing opportunities for kids, for girls, to play sports, but also to have that experience of being on a high school athletic team." NFL FLAG-In-School is a critical entry point for millions of students to get moving in school. By providing free flag football equipment and a standards-based curriculum to schools, the program empowers educators to motivate students with a fun and inclusive activity designed for all skill levels.

HK superstar Aaron Kwok gifts pregnant wife unlimited credit card
Aaron Kwok and Moka Fang, who tied the knot in 2017, have two daughters aged seven and six. Photo: Aaron Kwok/Instagram Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok is going all out to welcome his third child – and this time, it's reportedly a boy. The 59-year-old singer confirmed in June that his wife, model Moka Fang, 37, is expecting again. However, the singer-actor declined to disclose the gender of his third child then. Kwok and Fang, who tied the knot in 2017, have two daughters aged seven and six. According to Dimsum Daily, Fang is about five months pregnant. To celebrate the baby's upcoming arrival, Kwok has reportedly upgraded her credit card to one with no spending limit, giving her the freedom to splurge on whatever she desires. On top of that, the icon is said to have set aside a whopping HK$100mil (RM54.17mil) to celebrate the arrival of their third child. As Kwok seems to be especially thrilled, perhaps there is truth to the report that he found out about the baby's gender as he has long expressed a wish to have a son. When Fang was pregnant with their second child six years ago, he reportedly believed it was a boy and excitedly talked about having a male heir to inherit his collection of luxury cars and watches. More recently, Kwok apparently shared with friends a belief that daughters bring fortune, while sons might bring financial challenges. He reportedly enjoyed a winning streak at the gambling table before the births of his daughters, but experienced losses more recently – possibly a sign that a son was on the way. Despite his packed concert schedule – with upcoming shows in Macau over three consecutive weekends – Kwok reportedly plans to return home after each performance to spend time with his pregnant wife and daughters.

HONG KONG: Aaron Kwok is renowned for his slick dance moves and high-octane performances, but it's his latest gesture that has truly excited fans. According to a recent report by East Week, the 59-year-old Cantopop legend upgraded his wife Moka Fang's supplementary credit card to an unlimited one after learning they're expecting their third child – and it might be a boy. If confirmed, Kwok would be the first among the Four Heavenly Kings to have a son; Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, and Leon Lai are all fathers to daughters. Kwok already has two girls, Chantalle and Charlotte, aged seven and five respectively. Netizens have been quick to congratulate Kwok, with many expressing hopes that his first son will inherit his good looks. One netizen quipped: "If my husband gave me an unlimited card just because I'm having a boy, we'd be having a very different conversation." Kwok is scheduled to perform in Macau over three weekends this month. However, he reportedly plans to return home to Hong Kong after each show to be with Fang.
