#SHOWBIZ: HK actor Roger Kwok, 60, denies dating actress Hilary Chong, 23

HONG KONG: Popular actor Roger Kwok has dismissed claims suggesting a romantic relationship with actress and former Miss Hong Kong, Hilary Chong. Rumours began circulating after tabloids reported that Kwok, 60, had been giving private tennis lessons to Chong, 23, following their recent collaboration on the TVB drama Golden Forest. In a recent interview, Kwok urged the public not to take the rumours seriously, adding that such speculations could interfere with his chances of finding love. "Please don't make wild guesses and stop me from finding my true soulmate! I'm not seeing anyone currently, but if these rumours keep spreading, it will only scare people away," he said. Kwok, who finalised his divorce from former TVB star Cindy Au in 2024 after 18 years of marriage, described Chong as intelligent and gracious. Chong has also laughed off the rumours, reiterating that there will never be room for romantic development as she and Kwok share a "father-daughter relationship". The TVB actress, crowned Miss Hong Kong in 2023, further clarified that other Golden Forest co-stars were present on the day she played tennis with Kwok. "Our group is like one big family. Everyone shares a good familial relationship," she said.

Hong Kong authorities launch probe after wedding planner's vanishing act leaves trail of over 200 victims

A Hong Kong wedding planner's sudden disappearance has taken more than 200 customers by surprise, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. The company, PS Wedding & Event Decoration, allegedly removed its website and social media accounts, closed its office, and has not been contactable since Monday, according to a group set up by bewildered customers in a bid to share information about the firm. As of 5pm Wednesday, the group had about 225 people – both brides and grooms – who presented invoices issued by the wedding planner, with losses totalling over HK$1 million, Kwok, who organised the group, told HKFP. The 27-year-old, who asked to be identified only by her surname, purchased a HK$18,588 plan with the company for her upcoming wedding in December and paid a deposit of HK$8,200. However, she discovered on Monday that PS Wedding had removed its Facebook and Instagram accounts. She said she called and texted the company via WhatsApp, but to no avail. When she visited the company's San Po Kong office at around 11am on Tuesday, she saw that the office and signboard had been cleared, and the landlord told her the company had moved out. Kwok said she reached out to other brides on social media and found others who also could not contact PS Wedding. They formed a group to share information and filed a police report. She also said that a customer in her group received an email from PS Wedding as recently as Wednesday last week. The email – seen by HKFP – asked the customer to settle an outstanding payment of HK$13,594 by Friday last week. HKFP's calls to PS Wedding, including via WhatsApp, on Wednesday failed to get through. The Consumer Council told HKFP on Wednesday that, as of 5pm, it had received 31 complaints against PS Wedding, involving a total amount of more than HK$337,000. The highest single loss was HK$40,600, the council added. In an email reply on Wednesday, Customs confirmed it had received reports regarding the wedding company and launched an investigation. It also warned that a company could face a HK$500,000 fine and a jail sentence of up to five years if found to have violated the Trade Descriptions Ordinance. Under the ordinance, a service provider who accepts payments without providing the intended service within a reasonable period, or delivers a service significantly different from what was intended, commits an offence.

HK home prices rebound 0.35pc in April

HK home prices rebound 0.35pc in April A valuation expert says significant rebounds in property prices are still unlikely this year as developers may continue to cut prices. Photo: RTHK Hong Kong's lived-in home prices rebounded in April, capping a four-month decline. Official figures released by the Rating and Valuation Department on Wednesday showed that the home price index rose to 285.7 in April, up 0.35 percent from a month earlier, but that was still 7.7 percent lower from a year ago. For the first four months of the year, however, the gauge declined 1.21 percent. While prices of small and medium-sized units rose by 0.35 percent month on month on average, that for large units rose higher, 0.42 percent. Rental prices, meanwhile, continued to head north for the fifth consecutive month, and rose by 0.31 percent to 193.7 last month, or 3.64 percent higher over a year ago. For the first four months, the rental gauge was up by 0.62 percent. Commenting on the figures, Eddie Kwok, executive director of valuation and advisory services at CBRE Hong Kong, said residential prices had stabilised and were bottoming out. "Positive carry for residential properties resurfaces as the one-month Hong Kong interbank offered rate [Hibor] dropped in May," he said. The one-month Hibor rate, which is linked to local mortgage loans, fell to its lowest point in nearly three years last week, thanks to a flood of liquidity entering the city's capital markets. "If this trend can be sustained, the residential property market is likely to experience a recovery as it might cost less to repay mortgages as compared to renting," Kwok said. "And this is likely to attract buy-to-lease investors and end-users entering the residential property market eventually." But Kwok noted that significant rebounds in prices are still unlikely this year as developers that are keen to clear out their mounting inventories might take the opportunity to replenish their capital and continue to cut prices. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has warned that Hibor rates may still rebound.
