The Kansas City Chiefs have a presence at the 2025 NFL FLAG Championships

USA Today19-07-2025
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Stephanie Kwok, the Vice President and head of Flag Football, to discuss the impact the Kansas City Chiefs and the rest of the league are having on the ongoing NFL FLAG-In-School program with GENYOUth and this weekend's 2025 NFL FLAG Championships.
"We've got 300 teams coming out, about 3,000 athletes. Everything's going to broadcast on ESPN and Disney channels as well as the NFL network." said Kwok, "So looking forward to a long weekend of flag football and some of the best youth flag football will be going on in the country and and in and in the world, with some of our international teams coming too."
Ten youth flag football teams will represent the Kansas City Chiefs at the 2025 NFL FLAG Championships at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton, Ohio. The teams qualified through last October's NFL FLAG Regional Tournament and compete in Chiefs-branded uniforms.
"It's so interesting because flag football has been around for a long time, for decades as a recreational sport, but over the last few years, we've just seen that growth explode. I think there have been a lot of factors. I think the tailwind of the Olympic announcement back in late 2023 certainly helps with that." said Kwok, "But I think it's really to the culmination of a lot of the grassroots efforts that we've been seeing by all of the NFL clubs, by NFL itself, by all of the organizations in the community, just continuing to build flag football, continuing to build especially opportunities for girls to play in high school, for them to go then go on and play in college, so now you're seeing that momentum. With over 30 states offering high school programs for girls, there are more than 100 colleges that have either varsity or club teams as well. So that's a snapshot of all the growth we saw in the U.S., not even mentioned globally."
The KC Novas, Prairie Fire, Thunder Monkeys II, KC Shockers 12u, Thunder Monkeys, Grip Boost Elite, KC Heat—Red, and KC Shockers will represent Kansas. The KC Kings and Mambas will join them from Missouri.
"We've got the NFL FLAG-In-School program as well, which GENYOUth runs and which the NFL Foundation funds, that is just trying to help increase that accessibility," said Kwok. "But we're seeing that, not just at the elementary school levels, but that carries through with the accessibility. So I think one really interesting statistic in high school is that 50% of the girls on the high school flag football team are playing a high school sport for the first time, so we're just increasing opportunities for kids, for girls, to play sports, but also to have that experience of being on a high school athletic team."
NFL FLAG-In-School is a critical entry point for millions of students to get moving in school. By providing free flag football equipment and a standards-based curriculum to schools, the program empowers educators to motivate students with a fun and inclusive activity designed for all skill levels.

Ravens' Isaiah Likely needs surgery, but could be back early in the season

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Baltimore Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely needs surgery after injuring his lower leg this week. Coach John Harbaugh confirmed that Wednesday. He said the previous day that Likely hurt his ankle and foot area and would miss several weeks. reported Likely would miss about six weeks — and Baltimore's season opener is on Sept 7. 'He's going to have surgery,' Harbaugh said. 'I think the timeline I saw actually was accurate, on the timeline that was reported. So we've got a shot to get him back there right away early. We'll see.' Likely set career highs last season with 42 receptions for 477 yards and six touchdowns. It was his third season in the NFL. 'It was early in camp, and it's not one of those major-type of deals,' Harbaugh said. 'But it's something. It's multiple weeks.' ___ AP NFL:

Steelers named best fit for veteran receiver with multiple Pro Bowl selections

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been named the best fit for one of the top remaining free agents on the market. Kevin Patra listed the Steelers as the top landing spot for wide receiver Keenan Allen, who spent the 2024 campaign with the Chicago Bears. "If the Steelers want to finally break through their playoff doldrums, why not keep the party going with another veteran searching for a ring? Allen has dealt with injuries and struggled at times last year in Chicago, but he can still generate separation and would provide Aaron Rodgers with another experienced player who understands the nuances of the position," Patra wrote. Allen wasn't as effective as he usually is in 2024, as the veteran tallied 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games with the Bears. Just two years ago, in 2023 with the Los Angeles Chargers, Allen posted 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns with a career-high 108 receptions. The Steelers need to add a capable No.2 receiver to pair with DK Metcalf, and though Allen isn't the most dynamic player, the 33-year-old could provide adequate production as a secondary pass-catcher in Arthur Smith's offense. The six-time Pro Bowler would also be a solid security blanket for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and take a ton of pressure off Metcalf, who is set to carry most of the receiving load this year with George Pickens getting moved to the Dallas Cowboys. During his 12-year tenure with the Chargers, Allen notched six 1,000-yard seasons and five campaigns with over 100 catches. Though he is no longer that level of a player, the California product would bolster Pittsburgh's offense and shouldn't demand a massive contract. Allen has stated that he isn't interested in playing with the Steelers. However, the 2017 AP Comeback Player of the Year also said that playing with Rodgers intrigues him, so there's still a chance he could land in Pittsburgh if all other options are off the table.
