New radiotherapy machine and £5.3m extension at Southend Hospital officially opens

A STATE-of-the-art radiotherapy machine that carries out bespoke treatments for patients with a range of cancers has officially opened at Southend Hospital. The 'LINAC' radiotherapy machine, which uses advanced technology to deliver precise treatments, has been welcomed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It forms part of the £5.3million purpose-built extension to the radiotherapy department at Southend Hospital and is described as a 'major step forward' in cancer treatment across Essex. CEO Matthew Hopkins, first patient Leslie Cast, and Nicky Whilde, head of radiotherapy physics (Image: Mid and South Essex NHS Trust) Nicky Whilde, head of radiotherapy physics at Mid and South Essex NHS Trust, said: 'This is an advanced piece of equipment that will mean that more patients in mid and south Essex receive their radiotherapy with the latest technology. 'It uses surface-guided radiation therapy cameras to guide the radiotherapy, meaning radiation is delivered to the exact location of the tumour and minimises damage to surrounding healthy tissues. 'The machine can also adapt its doses as the tumour changes shape over time.' Essex County councillors in front of the new LINAC machine (Image: Mid and South Essex NHS Trust) The machine has already been in use for several weeks, with 20 patients having received daily radiotherapy courses. Leslie Cast, 79, from St Lawrence, Maldon, was the first patient to receive treatment using the new machine. He was present at the ceremony, along with Bayo Alaba, MP for Southend East and Rochford; David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh; Dame Rebecca Harris, MP for Castle Point; and Richard Holden, MP for Basildon and Billericay. Mr Burton-Sampson said: 'This is an exciting step forward for cancer care in Southend. 'Developments like the introduction of the hospital's new LINAC radiotherapy machine can't come soon enough. 'Patients will receive the very best care with this cutting-edge technology. It will ensure patients get the best chance for recovery.' Dame Rebecca Harris added: 'This is brilliant news for people living in Castle Point and across south Essex. 'This will improve outcomes and experiences for people going through some of the toughest times in their lives. 'It's encouraging to see such an important development for Southend Hospital, and I want to thank everyone who's worked so hard to make it a reality.'

Mirror Daily Digest: Top stories from NHS cancer tech to Macron's 'slap'

In this Monday's Mirror Daily Digest, we've pulled together the biggest stories of the day from new cancer tech for the NHS, to Emmanuel Macron and his wife. Welcome to the Mirror's Daily Digest, where we pull together all the best stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Sport teams and more. This Monday, we're taking a look at everything from a new rollout of cancer technology for the NHS, to Helen Flanagan's papparazzi pics in France. NHS hospitals to get cutting-edge machines to speed up cancer treatment - see full list ‌ Early this morning, our Politics team reported that there is to be a roll-out of new cancer treatment technology as NHS hospitals. ‌ The Department for Health and Social Care said the updated tech will cut rounds of radiotherapy and reach cancers in harder to treat areas like chest, abdomen and pelvis. The government said that by March 2027 the new linear accelerator (LINAC) treatment machines will help 4,500 more patients get treatment faster. They are being rolled out in 28 hospitals across England from August - backed by £70million in funding to improve the nation's cancer care. Meghan Markle's 'never-before-seen' list of demands that sparked Vogue feud' Our Showbiz team reported that Meghan Markle's alleged outrageous demands reportedly led to a fall-out with one of her prominent friends - and lost her the chance to appear on the front cover of fashion bible Vogue. According to new claims, the Duchess of Sussex piled so much pressure on the then-editor of Vogue UK Edward Enninful ahead of a potential appearance in the UK Vogue September 2022 issue that the pair fell out. ‌ Meghan, 43, had been working with Edward on a collaboration for the prestigious fashion issue that would include her keynote appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester, along with "involved extensive features across the magazine and its digital editions". Moment Emmanuel Macron's wife slaps him as he argues during official tour ‌ Our World News team earlier today reported that there has been shocking new footage showing the moment Emmanuel Macron's wife appears to slap him during a heated argument on an official tour. In footage taken yesterday evening at Hanoi airport, Macron's profile can be seen through the door of his official plane. Seconds later, his wife Brigette quickly raises a hand to his face, and appears to strike him. The French president looks surprised and turns to wave outside, before the couple begin to walk down the staircase. Emmanuel Macron then attempts to hold her hand, but she chooses not to take it, and instead holds onto the handrail of the walkway. A source close to Macron speaking to French news channel BFMTV dismissed the incident as simply a married couple "bickering." ‌ They added: "It was a moment for the President and his wife to unwind one last time before the start of the trip by having a little fun." Helen Flanagan slips into bargain blue swimsuit on solo trip after heartbreaking split ‌ Our Showbiz team shared papparazzi pictures of Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan in France, after she called it quits with her boyfriend last week. Seen sporting a bargain blue swimsuit following her heartbreaking split with Robbie Talbot, the Coronation Street star, 34, walked along the beach in Antibes alone, after reportedly having a 'grown up chat' with Robbie, who she had dated for a year, before calling it quits over claims she wanted children with the former footballer, 45. Following her heartbreak, the mum-of-three is now said to be focusing on the kids she shares with ex, Scott Sinclair - and her career - and decided to jet off abroad on a solo trip as she gets used to her single life again. Seen sporting a stunning £14 powder blue floral swimsuit from Primark while sunning herself at the swanky YOLO beach club in Antibes, France, the Rosie Webster star, cooled off in the sea, with her blonde locks tied up into a bun, sporting a pair of black Miu Miu designer sunglasses. ‌ Skydiver Jade Damarell's tormented final days from 'boyfriend split to tragic letter' This morning, our News team reported new details that have emerged about Jade Damarell's final days before she tragically plummeted to her death. ‌ The death of thrill-seeking Ms Damarell, 32, a highly experienced skydiver, has been described as an "unimaginable loss" amid an investigation. The woman, who had completed more than 400 previous jumps, died instantly after hitting the ground at Wrefords' Farm in Shotton, County Durham. She was pronounced dead at the scene. It is understood that Ms. Damarell, from Caerphilly, South Wales, had broken up with her boyfriend the day before her fatal skydive. After splitting from her husband, she had been in a relationship with Ben Goodfellow, 26, a fellow skydiving enthusiast, for approximately six to eight months. The couple had been living together in a double room at a property near the airfield, rented specifically for parachutists, for several months, according to MailOnline.

The Department for Health and Social Care said the updated tech will cut rounds of radiotherapy and reach cancers in harder to treat areas like chest, abdomen and pelvis Thousands of cancer patients will see faster treatment with cutting-edge radiotherapy machines being rolled out at NHS hospitals. The Department for Health and Social Care said the updated tech will cut rounds of radiotherapy and reach cancers in harder to treat areas like chest, abdomen and pelvis. ‌ The government said that by March 2027 the new linear accelerator (LINAC) treatment machines will help 4,500 more patients get treatment faster. They are being rolled out in 28 hospitals across England from August - backed by £70million in funding to improve the nation's cancer care. ‌ The roll-out will first be prioritised in hospitals which are currently using outdated treatment machines older than 10 years, the government said. Writing for The Mirror, Health Minister Karin Smyth, who has previously spoken about her own diagnosis of skin cancer, said the changes will mean fewer hospital visits for many patients. She added: "For anyone who has experienced cancer, you'll know that time is precious. Every day spent waiting for treatment is a day of added worry. By modernising our NHS, we will help ease the anxiety of waiting while delivering world class care. Health Secretary Wes Streeting added: 'There is a revolution taking place in medical technology which can transform treatment for cancer patients. But NHS hospitals are forced to use outdated, malfunctioning equipment thanks to 14 years of underinvestment under the previous government. "Thanks to the investment this government is making in our NHS, we will provide more cancer patients with world-class, cutting-edge care." He added: "By reducing the number of hospital visits required and preventing cancelled appointments, these state-of-the-art radiotherapy machines free up capacity so that thousands more patients are treated on time. ‌ "As a cancer survivor, I know just how important timely treatment is. These machines are part of the investment and modernisation that will cut waiting times for patients, through our plan for change." Kate Seymour, Head of External Affairs at Macmillan Cancer Support, added: 'Today marks an exciting step forward for cancer treatment in England. Many people across the country are facing long delays for care but today proves that better is possible. Investment in cutting edge technology is essential to bring down waiting times and help more people with cancer get the best care the UK has to offer, whoever and wherever they are.'
