‘LNJP becomes first Delhi government hospital with medical genetics department'
NEW DELHI: LNJP Hospital has become the first Delhi government hospital to establish a medical genetics department, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday as she inaugurated the facility. Besides the genetics ward, Gupta also inaugurated a Lactation Management Unit and Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAT) lab at the state-run hospital. Gupta said the government is consistently working to enhance Delhi's healthcare system. 'Our goal is to ensure accessible, high-quality, and timely medical services for every citizen -- regardless of age, background, or region. A healthy Delhi is the foundation of a developed Delhi. With this vision, three highly advanced health services have been launched, setting a new milestone in the city's medical infrastructure,' she said. Gupta said it is the first Delhi government hospital to establish a medical genetics department. It is the fourth such department among NMC-recognised colleges across India and the second to be linked with a Centre of Excellence for Rare Genetic Disorders, she added.

100 Days At Delhi's Helm: Rekha Gupta Draws The Line Between 'Visible' CM And A 'PR-Driven' One
Last Updated: Rekha Gupta has a clear mandate: to deliver what the Arvind Kejriwal government could not The first thing that strikes you about the new Delhi government under chief minister Rekha Gupta is the openness and accessibility of her office. This is in stark contrast to the Arvind Kejriwal years, during which entry was highly restricted unless permitted by the then-CM. There are numerous accounts of how crores were spent on upgrading his office, which very few people ever saw. The Bharatiya Janata Party has emphasised this difference in its battle for Delhi, claiming that, unlike the Kejriwal government, which the BJP accuses of secrecy and withholding information from the people, the Rekha Gupta administration promises to be transparent. Rekha Gupta has a clear mandate: to deliver what the Kejriwal government could not. However, she has limited time to achieve this. Despite complaints from many Delhi BJP members about the city's decline since the Sheila Dikshit era, they are aware that the February 2025 election was won on Narendra Modi's promise to serve the city well. Therefore, the BJP government needs to work diligently to meet expectations. From day one, the new CM, who has now completed 100 days in office, has taken a hands-on approach. The BJP aims to showcase her as a 'visible CM" in contrast to a 'PR-driven CM office". She has made unannounced visits to government-run schools to address water shortages, inspected streets to ensure potholes are filled, visited LNJP Hospital to guarantee immediate patient care and ICU admissions, and overseen the cleaning of the Yamuna River. Rekha Gupta knows she cannot afford any missteps. It is crucial for the Delhi government to deliver results quickly. As the national capital, Delhi is a pivotal battleground that the BJP won on the promise of a 'double-engine government", largely thanks to the PM's influence during the campaign. Rekha Gupta is aware that her challenge is to win over the hearts of Delhi's residents within the next 100 days. First Published: May 30, 2025, 07:00 IST

Evil man burns four-month pregnant wife alive after claims family 'fail to pay marriage dowry'
A man has been sentenced to life in prison after burning alive his pregnant wife, who succumbed to her injuries after fighting for her life for four days in hospital, over dowry payments A man has been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment after burning alive his pregnant wife over dowry in 2015. The victim, Jaya Devi, succumbed to her injuries after battling for four days at a Delhi hospital. On Saturday, the court in Bulandshahr, India handed down a sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 17,000 (£151) on her evil husband, Pramod Kumar. While delivering the verdict, Additional District and Sessions Judge Harikesh Kumar emphasised the need for courts to balance the personal circumstances of the accused with the broader societal impact of the crime. He said: "In determining the quantum of punishment, the court must consider the criminal tendencies, the motive, the societal repercussions of the offense, the accused's involvement, and all relevant factors, giving greater weight to societal implications." The tragic incident occurred on April 12, 2015. Jaya Devi, who was 32 at the time, had been married to Kumar, a resident of Bulandshahr, in 2007, the Times of India reports. The couple had two children. According to ADGC Keshav Dev Sharma, Pramod had subjected Jaya to persistent dowry harassment and family disputes, including disagreements over his share of the family property. "When her family failed to meet dowry demands, Pramod doused Jaya with kerosene and set her ablaze," said Sharma. She suffered over 85% burns and died at LNJP Hospital in Delhi. In her dying declaration, she recounted the entire incident. She was four months pregnant when she was killed. Last month, 37-year-old Prakash Nathsharma was also found guilty of murdering his pregnant wife over dowry demand. Public prosecutor Nalinikanta Moharana stated that Prakash attacked his 27-year-old wife, Jhuna Nath, with an axe on June 15, 2020. At the time, Jhuna was four months pregnant. She was immediately rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack by her parents but tragically succumbed to her injuries five days later. The couple had married in 2018. The investigation revealed that Jhuna had been subjected to ongoing abuse due to dowry demands. Following a detailed investigation, the police arrested Prakash, and the prosecution's case was further bolstered by the testimonies of 20 witnesses.
