#SHOWBIZ: Shaheizy Sam gains 30kg for 'Badak'

KUALA LUMPUR: A truly dedicated actor will go to great lengths to ensure their portrayal of a character on screen is as realistic as possible. Take, for instance, the remarkable transformation of Hollywood-calibre actor Christian Bale for his role as Trevor Reznik in the 2004 film, 'The Machinist'. Bale shed nearly 30kg through a strict diet regime to embody the character. Closer to home, Malaysian film enthusiasts will soon witness a stunning physical transformation by local actor Shaheizy Sam. Sam, a three-time ABPBH winner for Most Popular Star, underwent an incredible change for his new film, 'Badak'. To convincingly bring the character of Badak to life, Sam gained 30kg in the five months leading up to filming, achieved through a diet rich in sugar, fat, and fast food. What's more, the production companies, Clover Films, Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), and Papahan Films, even waited an additional six months for Sam to lose the weight again. This was necessary for different scenes where Sam's character had to appear with a much thinner physique. Sam expressed his excitement at being allowed to challenge himself with such a drastic physical change, all to ensure the success of his character in 'Badak'. "I'm very happy because this is the first time I've been able to bring two different physical forms into one film," he said. "I believe this will distract the audience from the usual me. This step makes the character feel fresh and really boosts self-confidence." 'Badak' is directed by M Raihan Halim, following the success of his previous film, 'La Luna', which represented Singapore in the early nominations for the foreign film category at the Academy Awards. This new film aims to be a soul-stirring experience with stunning visuals. Interestingly, 'Badak' reunites M Raihan with Sam, who plays the titular role, and Wan Hanafi Su (who plays Abah), after their collaboration on 'La Luna' approximately two years ago. 'Badak' delves into themes of familial love, the transformative power of music, and the heroism found in unspoken affection. This Singapore-Malaysia-Indonesia collaboration is set to be screened in Malaysian cinemas on Oct 2, followed by Singaporean cinemas on Oct 16. Sam commented that his willingness to gain and then lose weight for the character of Badak demonstrates his dedication and passion for acting. "I prove that my passion for acting is still alive after 30 years," he said. M Raihan is notably optimistic about the cast entrusted with bringing the characters in 'Badak' to life. "I don't think it's an exaggeration when I say that there is only one person disciplined and dedicated enough to play the character of Badak," he said. "That individual is Sam. We had so much fun working together on 'La Luna' that I knew I wanted to continue working together on something more challenging and scarier! "'Badak' is a real emotional journey. I'm glad not only Sam is there, but also Aida Amron, Kahoe Hon, and the one and only Ayah Wan (Wan Hanafi Su) to go through this experience together." 'Badak' narrates the emotional journey of the titular character, a deaf single father whose life revolves around his daughter, Mirah. Badak raises Mirah with immense love and dignity. However, their quiet routine is disrupted when Mirah suddenly becomes a hip-hop star. As their tranquil world intersects with the loud world of music, Badak must bridge the ever-widening gap, not just in terms of sound, but also spiritually. 'Badak' promises a heartwarming and thought-provoking cinematic experience, celebrating the strength of family, the pursuit of dreams, and a true love that transcends all else and touches the soul. 'Badak' is produced in collaboration with Sinemart Indonesia, Juita Viden, One Tree Holdings, ACT 2 Pictures, and Dropkick.

A Guide to All 12 Astrological Signs Your horoscope for the week of June 22 to June 28, 2025, is here, and we're almost out of the woods. Read: A midweek new moon moment resets around what it means to be part of an interconnected and caring community, family, domesticity, and hospitality. It's Cancer season, and so the Crab hosts the reset to these themes. Throw in emotional sensitivity and compassion because we know we need to accommodate both everyone's feelings and our own! The Crab sports a hard shell and defensive pincers, so remember you can retreat into your cozy comfort zone when you need to regroup. Mercury heads into confident Leo on Thursday so get your creative ideas out into the world and test their viability. If you need to talk yourself up, this would be the time to do it—why whisper when you can roar! Find your weekly horoscope for your zodiac sign below. We recommend reading the horoscopes for your rising sign. Aries Weekly Horoscope It's new moon time midweek as La Luna resets in your domesticity sector. Take time to reflect on your past year in this sphere, give gratitude, and move into a future timeline of 'where to next.' What do you want to feel; what kind of roots do you want to put down or expand on? Are you up for a move, a housemate, a color change, more hosting, or a home fitness station? Cook it up and draw up that timeline. Emotional connection and security are high on the values list of this one, which can slow an Aries down because it's not a solo act, it's a family affair—chosen or otherwise. Challenge yourself both to be independent and to cocreate the reality of home, family, your house itself, or a feeling of belonging. No matter your domestic arrangement, there's space to plant positive seeds for growth now. Taurus Weekly Horoscope As La Luna merges with the sun, forming a new moon, the sky is dark and ready to receive your seeds of intention. Set about manifesting the lunar cycle by writing up to 10 intentions you're ready to bring into this world. Yes, you're more than capable of doing it the old-fashioned, practical way, but it helps to visualize and feel into your prospective year ahead. So let's do that. This new moon in watery Cancer resets in your sphere of local connections and relationships; start there. What do you want your community to look and feel like? Think emotional security, warmth, and perhaps bonding over shared projects or tasks. Meeting in a learning environment? You need that teacher to be a matriarchal or parental figure. If you're the one imparting information, you may be the one reparenting! Healing any early-schooling slights? Now's the time to reframe and give younger you some love and words of encouragement. Gemini Weekly Horoscope As the sun and moon have their monthly meet-up on Wednesday, they form the new moon. Or technically, it's a dark moon, then into the new moon crescent. Technicalities aside, this is the best time to manifest and plan with the 12 archetypal signs, one per month. This week it's about family dynamics, chosen family, and your tribe that has your back no matter what. Feeling nostalgic? It's certainly the month for it. Go through your phone or older archives, and relive some favorite moments. Let them transport you to the feeling of that time. These memories and images may have value you can translate into monetary value. Or that value could be entirely personal. Back to manifesting—set your intentions on nurturing your nest egg and deciding what it takes for you to feel financially and emotionally secure; then move toward it as the moonlight grows with each night. Cancer Weekly Horoscope Many happy returns, as they say! And of course, that wish from friends, family, and Hallmark cards is a reference to the sun's annual return to where it was on the day you were born, a.k.a. your birthday! Since the sun is in your sign this month, the new moon joins it there. Midweek is your yearly new moon lunation, making it a particularly potent time to set your intentions for the coming 12-month cycle. Consider your sense of self, direction, look, and outlook as you write up to 12 intentions you're willing to back, put the legwork behind, and welcome in when you start seeing results. Mercury in Leo lights up your finance sector, so offer up entertaining ideas, and take a creative approach to your income or assets. Leo Weekly Horoscope This week's new moon resets in your sphere of dreams, sleep, and the collective consciousness, so double down on your journey to you. That could be a reset of your creative inner world or a commitment to trusting your gut for the next phase of your journey. Since you're the next cab off the birthday rank, this period is well used to explore your inner landscape as well as get plenty of rest. Tune to your inner voice—feel, hear, see and express from this space. Set intentions around themes of security, family, emotional connectivity, and what home ideally means and looks like to you. Mercury, the planet of comms, heads into your sign on Thursday, which is a great time to catch your creative ideas and share them with the people and places that can appreciate them. Say it loud and say it proud, Leo! Virgo Weekly Horoscope When your friends feel like family, well, that's the theme of this month's new moon in your sphere of networks, groups, and friendships. New moons are the lowest point of energy. Since it's dark on a moonless night, our bodies know to lay low, rest, and conserve energy. Note how different you feel around a full moon for contrast! This week, however, it's time to assess, give gratitude for, and then visualize your timeline in this department over the next year. Set your intentions for how you want your extended connections to feel and look, what you want to achieve, and even what networks you want to be a part of, create, or lead. Nurture, food, caring, and even a motherly or parental connection are all part and parcel of this one. Mercury into your zen zone suggests inner focus will go a long way. Go within to create your masterpiece. Libra Weekly Horoscope This week's new moon resets in your sphere of career, so use this is an opportunity to plan your goals. Recenter your aspirations, and connect them to where you are now, with what you have at your disposal. Set your intentions to join these two points! The challenge is that you're going to have to give your gut feelings their due and lean into emotional connection. Think of it as a family affair: We're all here to nurture one another's best side, and sometimes that takes acknowledging the whole person. Gather your chicklets and take charge—more mother hen than detached aesthete. While you easily have the intellect and wherewithal, the juice is in emotional connection so others feel seen, can do their best, and rally to support your cause. Bring them in; you don't have to do everything as a dynamic duo. Add a few more to the team to make the dream work. Scorpio Weekly Horoscope This week's new moon in sister water sign Cancer supports your interest in learning, teaching, or expanding your horizons. Consider what's been on your wish list lately, and write it all down as a list of intentions to work toward and manifest over the coming year. Nurture relationships with those from backgrounds different from yours; they have so much to bring and teach. As they say, you can't expect different results doing the same thing, so a fresh perspective is valuable. Plan that trip, apply for that course, and follow through on that interesting conversation. If you've ever thought of research and publishing, add that to your wish list. Feeling a sense of nostalgia? Swim around in it and relive fond memories from days gone by. Sometimes they light us up, fuel us, and reinforce a positive sense of self. They may also be exactly what you want to share. Podcast, anyone? How about that Netflix special? You have to start somewhere! Sagittarius Weekly Horoscope Get the ambience just right—this week's new moon resets in your sphere of sex, intimacy, and other people's resources. It also relates to the metaphysical, so those dearly departed may pop up in your memories and someone may have a great ghost story to share. Or share yours—everyone seems to have one; it's a conversation starter! You're the queen of tall tales, so improv and entertain friends over candlelight and comfort food. This is also the perfect moment to review your emotional health and connections, as well as the nurturing required to maintain it all. Set your intentions around what you're ready to call in and share back. Since it's in the sign of hard-shelled Cancer the Crab, a hard boundary is appropriate for this area of life too. Enjoy some cuddle time on the couch or closeness with friends. Lending an ear? Most likely. Ask what outcome they require—a solution, or just talking? Capricorn Weekly Horoscope As a new moon pulls into your sphere of equal one-to-one relationships, the tone is perfect for revisiting your intentions, commitments, and situationships. What has your past year looked like in this area? Feel into how it felt in your body when you think of it overall. And also each relationship, from collaborators to bestie to bae. Looking ahead, how do you want to nurture and progress or maintain them? Where do you want shifts, if any, to occur? And who might you like to invite in over the coming 12 months? Add them to your wish list, and come up with three strategies to achieve those goals. There have been plenty of people monetizing their partnerships via social medial if you want to take it public, set your intentions as if it's your business plan! Aquarius Weekly Horoscope It's time to get your work fam on point, Aquarius. This week a fresh new moon resets in your sphere of work, wellness, and the routines that keep the wheels on and rolling. While you're renowned for your ability to emotionally detach, this one is about bringing people together under your wing and creating a sense of emotional bonding. When you feel part of a community that cares, it makes a difference. And to feel emotionally connected to your work, it's essential to have a nurturing, nourishing environment. Set your intentions for how you want that to develop and feel over the next year. The right environment also impacts your health positively, which is double the reason for nailing it. Working from home? Perhaps some flexibility there would suit you. Pisces Weekly Horoscope It's time to get your imagination fired up and visualize your year ahead as La Luna resets in your sphere of leisure, fun, and romance. What did the past year look like? Workaholic, escapist extraordinaire, or a decent balance? How about your self-expression? Were you consuming, creating, or a bit of both? Did you make the most of your time when not working? You have a rich sense of fun and can be a creative force with an active imagination and the ability to create or appreciate inspired art and design. Set your intentions for where you want to take these themes over the coming year. Are you picking up from where you left off some time ago, developing an ongoing talent, or calling in a completely new direction? Take what you enjoyed and benefited from over the last year and leave the rest. This is a new page, you're the writer, jot down up to 10 intentions, then take steps toward it over the rest of the week to get the ball rolling.

1-Alfaro: New lighthouse-inspired dining spot in Singapore with stunning sea views from 34 storeys high

A scenic locale, picture-perfect ambience, and thoughtfully curated menu focused on a specific type of cuisine – it goes without saying that these winning elements are always present with any concept by 1-Group, the F&B collective that's behind the likes of Botanico @ The Summerhouse, Camille at 1-Flowerhill and plenty others. It's thus no mystery why these locations are always top picks for special occasions like anniversaries, proposals and even weddings. Now, buckle up for its newest dining spot, 1-Alfaro by Monti, which delivers in these aspects and more. While unexpectedly located at Pasir Panjang – an area laden with steely industrial buildings full of STEM companies – this new date night spot rewards patrons with sweeping views of the surrounding sea from its vantage point on the 34th floor. Which is beautifully fitting, since 'Alfaro' means 'lighthouse' in Italian. Here's what you can expect at 1-Alfaro, which houses Italian restaurant La Torre, and alfresco rooftop bar La Luna. It's classic Italian staples over at La Torre, which leans towards the cuisine of Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy. Tuck into the likes of hearty charcoal-grilled meat and seafood, fried lasagna ($16), and house-made burrata gelato with rosemary tuile ($17) – a menu conceptualised by a Genovese chef. Small eaters – or those who'd like to try a little bit of everything – will be glad to know that most of La Torre's handmade pastas such as Fettuccine flat egg pasta ($26) and cannelloni della nonna ($26) also come in half-portion alternatives, at half the price. Your meal tastes even better accompanied with panoramic views of the sea, which you'll get to enjoy a good eyeful of thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Golden hour here is sure to be stunning, so if you're coming for dinner, it'll be wise to pick a strategic timing that'll let you witness the sunset. La Luna: chill alfresco rooftop bar Watch ships cruise by with a classic Italian cocktail ($16) in hand at La Luna – La Torre's semi-outdoor bar extension. This airy space will have you soaking up the salty sea breeze, all under the comfort of a shelter overhead. Wine-lovers have much to be excited about with an extensive list featuring 90-odd reds, whites, rosés and champagnes from Italy, France, Spain and more. Weddings at 1-Alfaro Just like other 1-Group dining venues, 1-Alfaro does take bookings for wedding solemnisations and banquets, inclusive of all the essential equipment like a projector, sound system, and bridal room, along with customised planning with styling. The indoor space of La Torre can accommodate up to 120 persons, seated – which is just the right amount for a cosy celebration with all your nearest and dearest – but those who'd like to book out the entire venue to fit more people can also do so. How to get to 1-Alfaro by Monti Despite its tranquil ambience, 1-Alfaro is located just a two-minute walk from Labrador Park MRT station – absolutely convenient. It's also not too far from Labrador Nature Reserve, so you can enjoy a breezy post-meal stroll there and head out to the tip of Labrador Jetty or even the pink Berlayer Beacon (also known as Berlayer Point Lighthouse) if you've got comfy shoes on. 1-Alfaro by Monti is located at Level 34 of Labrador Tower along 1 Pasir Panjang Road. La Luna's Little Sibling Debuts This Weekend in Logan Square

After six years in Pilsen, Samantha Sanchez wants more. Sanchez and sister Corina are about to open their second restaurant, La Lunita, in Logan Square. Think of it as the name suggests — it's La Luna's little sibling. The new restaurant will bring over favorites from Pilsen with a few notable changes to the menu. Opening date should be Saturday, June 14 at 2539 N. Milwaukee Avenue. While the Pilsen location uses tortillas from El Milagro, a beloved local manufacturer, La Lunita will serve tacos wrapped in corn tortillas made on premises. The menu from chef Marco Colin will focus more on platters and entrees. Look for chicken mole and more steak dishes. There's also a grilled and smoked octopus. Colin will make use of a wood-burning grill. Sanchez is excited about serving wines from Mexico, something she didn't have access to until recently: 'I'm taking the time to carefully select the spirits I want to bring in and embrace,' she says. 'You know, certain small businesses, certain local and Latin-owned wineries.' The Pilsen restaurant opened six years ago and has seen changes along 18th Street. The small and narrow restaurant and bar has brought a new energy to the area, and Sanchez hopes that translates in Logan Square. Designwise, there's no patio, but a garage door-style window in the front swings out to improve circulation. The space also utilizes the signature flower tile from the Pilsen location. There's about 80 seats inside with room for 20 at the bar. La Lunita's drink menu intrigues as every beverage can be made non-alcoholic. It's cost effective and also gives those who are avoiding booze more choices. Sanchez didn't want to treat those customers like a vegetarian in the '80s, with menus usually featuring a single sad pasta or salad. 'I didn't like giving them a B.S. cocktail,' Sanchez says. 'I wanted them to feel like they could still order off the menu exactly like what everybody else is ordering.' Sanchez feels more poised in opening her second restaurant. She's found her own niche and is contributing to causes like Let's Talk Womxn, and breaking out from her father's shadow. Sam Sanchez was the founder of Wrigleyville mainstay John Barleycorn. He's been very vocal in his political beliefs as of lat, as ICE protests and raids dominate the headlines. Samantha Sanchez is thankful for her family's support, but wants to establish her own identity and a new company called Culture Hospitality. She wants to open more restaurants in other parts of Chicago. With La Luna and La Lunita, she found that Pilsen and Logan Square share similar qualities. 'I felt that everybody knew each other and was a neighbor — everybody wanted to connect,' she says. 'I feel that same energy.' Check out photos of the food, drink, and space below. La Lunita , 2539 N. Milwaukee Avenue , opening on Saturday, June 14; opening hours will be 4 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday through Thursday; 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday; 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday See More: Chicago Restaurant News Eater Inside
