9-1-1 Season 8 Finale: 118's New Captain & Tribute to Bobby After Death Explained
The Season 8 finale of aired on May 15, 2025, and concluded with a sweet tribute to Bobby Nash, and hinted at who would be the next captain. The series, which focuses on the lives of the first responders of Los Angeles, debuted initially in January 2018. Since then, it has been one of the biggest shows to air on TV. Moreover, ABC has already confirmed that 9-1-1 will be returning for a 9th season. So, here's everything you need to know about the 9-1-1 Season 8 finale as well as the tribute to Bobby Nash. Peter Krause's character Bobby Nash's death in the episode 'Lab Rats' left fans heartbroken, as he was one of the longest-standing characters in the series. Nash sacrifices himself in order to save his teammate, Howie 'Chimney' Han, played by Kenneth Choi. He contracts a deadly virus in a research facility and decides to give the only present dose of the cure to Han. His death results in the series appointing a new captain of Firehouse 118. Although Brian Thompson's character, Vincent Gerard, took up the responsibility, he is just the temporary captain. In his statement, he said, 'I'm not here to take his place. No one can. I'm not going to be returning as your captain. I'm just here to get you through this difficult transition until Chief Simpson can appoint a candidate more worthy.' Additionally, the makers have not confirmed the official successor of Captain Bobby Nash. However, they did hint in the final episode that Season 9 might have Chimney Han taking over the role. Following Bobby Nash's death, Firehouse 118 was left grieving the loss of their beloved captain. However, the 9-1-1 Season 8 finale, 'Seismic Shifts,' brought a big surprise for not just the fans but the crew as well. In the episode, Athena, played by Angela Bassett, and the others meet Chimney and Maddie Han, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, in the hospital. Here, they are introduced to the couple's second-born. As Athena holds the newborn, Chimney states, 'Athena… say hello to Robert Nash Han,' thus paying tribute to Bobby Nash by naming his child after the former captain. 'Lab Rats' is Part 2 of the two-episode lab leak arc, in which Bobby, Chimney, Hen and Ravi got locked in an underground lab that had been experimenting with a deadly virus after they went in to put out a fire. Bobby went on to save the lives of each of his team members, performing life-saving surgery on Hen when her lung collapsed; delivering oxygen to Ravi when he fainted after his tank went empty; and helping treat Chimney, who had become infected with the virus, slowing the disease's progression while sending Athena to track down the stolen vial of anti-viral. The vial was successfully retrieved and Chimney was saved, only for Bobby to reveal after his team had been rescued that his air tube had been compromised and he also had become infected, selflessly hiding his illness so the only dose of the antidote could go to expectant father Chimney. Bobby died so others on his crew would survive. In his goodbye letter to fans, Krause wrote that 'Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them.' On Thursday's May 1 9-1-1 epsiode, the 118 must come together to lay their fallen hero to rest. Meanwhile, despite her own grief, Athena re-investigates the death of a child to help a grieving mother.

Departing ‘911' Actor Says Heartfelt Goodbye: 'It Has Been My Honor'
[This story contains MAJOR spoilers for the April 17 episode of , 'Lab Rats.'] For the first time in eight seasons, 911 has killed off a member of its core cast. More from The Hollywood Reporter '911' Star and Showrunner Unpack a Series-Altering Death in 'Lab Rats' 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Teases 'Abbott Elementary' Crossover Episode Jessica Capshaw Set for '911: Nashville' at ABC In the ABC drama's April 17 episode, titled 'Lab Rats,' L.A. Fire Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) sacrifices his own life to save members of his crew. Bobby shares a final moment with his wife, LAPD Sgt. Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett), before succumbing to a deadly virus he and his fellow firefighters had been trying to contain. In a long statement about his departure from the show, Krause acknowledges that long-time viewers of the show may be 'upset by this loss, and they have a right to be. It is a loss.' But he also defends the decision by co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear, who told The Hollywood Reporter that 'It makes sense for his character to have a tragic sacrifice as a conclusion of his entire journey in the show. And also, if there's a character whose death is going to affect the most characters, who would that be?' Krause says in his statement, 'It was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them.' Krause also thanks his castmates, the show's executive producers, crew and technical adviser, and the real-life first responders who do the work he has portrayed on 911 for the past eight seasons. His full statement is below. I would like to thank Dana Walden, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear for entrusting me with such a complex character over these nine years. It has been my honor to portray Captain Bobby Nash. In October 2017, through him, we began tackling topics such as grief, guilt, anger and addiction while exploring his relationship with a higher power, forgiveness and grace. On his path of healing, we watched him join and embrace both his new family at the firehouse and his new family with Athena Grant where he found love and acceptance. We also had plenty of fun along the way. It was a joy. Humbled by working in step with our technical advisor, Chief Mike Bowman, and real firefighters, I wish to thank you all for helping me bring a sense of dignity and realism to the character in our larger-than-life emergency landscape. Your kind and complimentary words have meant the world to me. I've heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss. That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them. We at 911 salute all the incredible men and women who do these dangerous jobs and strive to keep us safe. Our show is incredibly difficult to make at times with long hours, challenging stunts and elaborate disasters. We couldn't do it without each other. I wish to thank everyone in every department and all those at ABC, 20th Television and Fox. We are a sprawling team. I will miss all my 911 family. Our incredible crew whose professional excellence is second to none. All the writers who keep pulling rabbits out of hats. All the directors tasked with the same. All the incredible guest cast over the years as well as Jennifer Love Hewitt and the cast in the call center. I will miss my partner, Angela Bassett. Her strength and her sweetness, and us holding hands. We parted ways too soon. Much love. Tim Minear and Brad Buecker, you've been my pillars and are two of the best in the business. I will miss you both. Finally, I will miss my beloved and unruly children of the 118. Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Oliver Stark, Ryan Guzman and Anirudh Pisharody: this is a tough goodbye. Stay unruly, but be professional and get the job done. Misfit heroes need each other. That's how we do it at our firehouse. Pass it along to the next new guy. This has been one wild adventure. I thank you all, with all my heart. ‘9-1-1' Star Peter Krause Speaks Out After Devastating Season 8 Twist, Says It's a ‘Bold Creative Choice'
Note: This story contains spoilers from '9-1-1' Season 8, Episode 15. Peter Krause's fire Captain Bobby Nash has been through a lot in eight seasons on '9-1-1,' including a near-fatal heart attack, being shot and almost drowning on a capsized cruise ship and somehow survived. Until this week, when he sacrificed himself to save a member of his team and died by the end of Episode 15. The actor's exit had not been announced ahead of time, making his character's death that much harder on fans. Although a trailer scene in which Buck (Oliver Stark) lets out an anguished scream sparked speculation that only losing his father figure Bobby would affect him that deeply. (Buck's BFF Eddie and his son Christopher were, of course, safely out out of harm's way in Texas.) This also marks the first major death on '9-1-1' in eight seasons, changing the stakes for the hit TV franchise moving forward. In a statement to press, Krause said, 'I've heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss.' He went on to say, 'That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them. We at '9-1-1' salute all the incredible men and women who do these dangerous jobs and strive to keep us safe. Our show is incredibly difficult to make at times with long hours, challenging stunts and elaborate disasters. We couldn't do it without each other.' 'Lab Rats' saw the team fight to save Chimney (Kenneth Choi) from a deadly supervirus after his helmet cracked while responding to a lab fire. The second half of a two-part storyline seemed to be headed for a happy ending once Chimney received the antidote in the nick of time. And then Bobby refused to leave the lab with the rest of the crew, telling Buck and then his wife Athena (Angela Bassett) that there was a leak in in the air hose to his Hazmat suit and that he knowingly gave the only existing dose of the antidote to Chimney. He said a heartbreaking goodbye to Athena from the other side of a contamination zone in a clear homage to Spock (Leonard Nimoy's) death in 'Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan' before kneeling to pray one last time. Showrunner Tim Minear told TheWrap that it was his decision, not Krause's to kill off the beloved character. With three episodes left this season, Minear said the show will follow the immediate aftermath of this massive loss and catapult into one last major emergency in the Season 8 finale. In March, footage of a funeral procession, with Bobby's wife Athena (Angela Bassett) and her children walking behind a fire engine leaked, with fans assuming it might be a dream sequence. Add in an image of a script — taken from a video posted by Aisha Hinds — that has Bobby calling 9-1-1 from his coffin that he'd been buried alive and it's all fueled the fan theory that Bobby's tragic death is going to be one big fakeout. This week, Minear told TheWrap that the fire captain is absolutely, 100% dead, but then again, this is the franchise that featured a bee-nado in LA, a tsunami in Santa Monica and a volcano and an asteroid hitting Austin, Texas. Not to mention characters surviving despite being hit by lightning, having their throat cut by a serial killer and, perhaps most memorably, having a length of rebar rammed through their skull. Minear did tell TheWrap, 'Episode 15 is not Peter's last appearance this season,' but he also insisted, '[The show] needed a major character death for the audience to feel that there were real stakes in any of these cases … Next season, when our characters are in a precarious situation, you might be gripping the arms of your chair a little bit tighter.' '9-1-1' airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. PT on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
