Here's why this North Thurston middle school was locked out last week

Chinook Middle School and other schools were briefly locked out last week after a suspect, fleeing from Washington State Patrol troopers and Thurston County Sheriff's deputies, ditched his vehicle nearby. That suspect is still at large, said Sheriff's Lt. Mike Brooks on Sunday. Chinook Middle School families received this message about noon Tuesday, May 20: 'Due to police activity in the area, the Lacey Police Department has advised us to initiate a lockout,' the email reads. 'All exterior doors to the school are currently locked. We are in communication with the Lacey Police Department and awaiting further instructions. Please be assured that all students are safe. We will update you when we have more information.' The lockout was lifted shortly thereafter, according to a follow-up email from the school. Sheriff Derek Sanders explained what happened in a social media post, saying that Chehalis police had advised them that the driver of an H3 Hummer, who allegedly was casing houses, then fled north on Interstate 5. 'A short time later, WSP attempted to stop the Hummer and a pursuit was initiated. Near the 110 mile marker, the Hummer slammed on the brakes, turned around, and began driving the wrong way down I-5,' Sanders wrote. He said the driver crossed the median, fled toward College Street and ditched his vehicle. Lacey police Sgt. Jeremy Knight said Sunday that location was near North Thurston Public Schools' district headquarters, which triggered the lockout. Other schools in the area also were briefly locked out, a district spokeswoman said Sunday. According to a photo released by the Sheriff's Office, the man was last seen in a sleeveless black shirt, black short pants, red socks and black sneakers. He also has tattoos on both arms. His hair was tied up in a bun, the photo shows. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Thurston non-emergency dispatch line at 360-704-2740.

Police offer new details in Tesla charging station vandalism

Earlier this week, a Tesla Supercharger station exploded in Lacey. Now, a new video showing a now-wanted suspect has been released by police. In the parking lot of the shopping center where the vandalism first occurred on Tuesday morning, a couple of charging stations were still wrapped in plastic bags, but the generators have since been replaced. A new video released by the FBI's Seattle Field Office shows the suspect, described as a white male between 5′10″ and 6′2″. Authorities say he also walks with a distinctive limp, 'with his right leg kicking out and, at times, his right hand held behind his back.' Additionally, the suspect was wearing a dark jacket with a hood, gray pants, and a face covering and carrying a white bag, which may have been plastic. The suspect may have injuries consistent with being close to an explosion or intense heat, such as a concussion, burns, or shrapnel injuries. While multiple law enforcement agencies are now involved in the investigation, Tesla drivers are still concerned for their safety. 'At the end of the day, this is somebody's property, and vandalizing it, maybe you're trying to send a message. But, ultimately, it's hurting people that own the cars and may have owned the cars for a while before politics were involved,' said driver Sagar Jauheri. 'I mean, it's definitely scary and also frustrating. I think people don't look at the overall holistic view, in terms of how these things can impact people and impact the community here.' The FBI, ATF, and Lacey Police Department are now asking for the public's help, asking anyone in the surrounding South Sound Center area to review any doorbell or security cam footage they have from late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Seattle's FBI field office confirmed a press conference is set for this coming Tuesday, April 15, at 1 p.m., where they will provide more logistical details as they continue to ask for the public's assistance in this case. Anyone who may recognize this person, have video footage of the suspect, or have information related to the arson at the Tesla supercharger station is asked to contact the FBI's Toll-Free tipline at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or submit a tip online at You may also contact the Lacey Police Department at (360) 459-4333, or contact your local FBI office, the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.

Law enforcement investigating damage to Tesla charging station in Washington state

Police and the FBI are investigating after a Tesla charging station was damaged in Lacey, Washington early Tuesday morning. 'This morning at 1:34, officers were dispatched to a malicious mischief after receiving multiple calls reporting a loud noise in the area,' the Lacey Police Department said in a statement. Officers arrived to discover a Tesla charging station had been damaged, police said. Lacey Police Department detectives are working with federal partners to investigate the incident. Malicious mischief can be a felony charge depending on the amount of monetary damage caused, according to Washington state law. The FBI is aware of the incident and is working with its partners to determine what happened, the agency said in a statement. Tesla vehicles, showrooms and charging stations across the country have been vandalized in recent months as Tesla CEO Elon Musk faces public backlash in relation to his position as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency and his role in slashing government staffing and budgets. The FBI launched a task force in March to crack down on violent Tesla attacks. Lacey is about 60 miles south of Seattle, where 22 Tesla vehicles have been vandalized this year as of March 30, the Seattle Police Department told CNN on Tuesday. Last month in Las Vegas, a suspect shot at Tesla cars at a repair shop and ignited two of them with Molotov cocktails, police said. In a statement on its @TeslaCharging X account, the company said it's on site with the Lacey Police Department and FBI to review camera footage of the incident. It's also working with Puget Sound Energy to get the charging station back online as soon as possible, according to the post on X.
